Newt Gingrich Campaign Spars With Mitt Romney Surrogates (VIDEO)

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Walk to the back of any Newt Gingrich campaign event in Florida and you're likely to run into a few members of the U.S. House who are decidedly not backing the former speaker. In fact, they're all surrogates for Mitt Romney.

Reps. Charlie Bass (R-N.H.), Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), Mary Bono Mack (R-Calif.) and Connie Mack (R-Fla.) have all been taking turns going around the state to Gingrich's events, available to talk to the media -- and any Gingrich backers who may recognize them.

But on at least three occasions, they have also gotten into skirmishes with Gingrich campaign spokesman R.C. Hammond.

It started on Thursday morning in Mount Dora, Fla., when Hammond confronted Chaffetz.

Chaffetz told The Huffington Post that Hammond came up to him with an audio recorder and started bombarding him with questions about whether he supported Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

"I am a citizen with questions. He is a congressman without answers," Hammond told The Huffington Post later in the day.

Hammond went at it again on Friday, asking Chaffetz if he wanted a seat on Gingrich's charter plane. When a reporter asked whether Hammond's tone to the congressman was appropriate, Hammond replied, "Sure. He's a citizen like everyone else. I think we're pointing out the fact that the Romney campaign is running scared. They're looking for any opportunity to distort."

It happened again on Saturday morning, this time with Connie Mack in Port St. Lucie. But this time, Mack was ready, according to the Washington Post, and "quickly began browbeating him about Gingrich's work for Freddie Mac, the federally backed mortgage giant that paid him $1.6 million for consulting work."

"Apparently, he's very sensitive about people asking questions about Newt Gingrich and his relationship with Freddie Mac. So he tries to intimidate us and bully us out of the way," Mack told The Huffington Post at Gingrich's Hispanic Town Hall in Orlando Saturday afternoon. "We're not doing anything different than what other campaigns are. Bracketing events is a normal thing. You know, you're in the business. But apparently he gets very sensitive about people asking questions about Newt Gingrich's relationship with Freddie Mac."

He added that it was a sign that the Gingrich campaign was getting "desperate."

"You can just tell this is a campaign in decline," he said.

Gingrich's Hispanic Town Hall was nearly empty. Roughly 60 seats out of the 480 seats at Centro de la Familia Cristiana were filled by attendees, according to an estimate by the Miami Herald.

Gingrich arrived 55 minutes late and then spoke for less than 10 minutes. Though the event was billed as a town hall, audience members were not allowed to stand up and ask questions. He did stick around to take photos and chat with attendees one-on-one, although he typically does that at every event.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Hammond said he thought turnout for the event was "very good," and he declined to say why Gingrich was late.

When asked whether Gingrich gave the green light to Hammond's confrontations with the Romney surrogates, Hammond replied, "He certainly hasn't discouraged it."

The following Gingrich event, the Orange County Liberty Counsel Forum at the Aloma Baptist Church in Winter Park, Fla., was much more filled out. The conservative audience gave Gingrich several standing ovations for his answers on defunding Planned Parenthood, moving the U.S. embassy in Israel to Jerusalem and opposing embryonic stem cell research.

Here's a video of another high tech auto assembly plant: Fords Camacari assembly plant in Brazil. This plant would have been built in the U.S. except for the objections from the UAW.

Che's video is much better: that's a real factory, not the glorified showcase that VW built. What I'd like to see is a real cost breakdown of why Ford built that factory in Brazil, how much of it was due to labor costs vs regulatory costs, whether due to govt laws or union rules.

So basically it's a car factory for cars not meant for mere mortals to afford. Now if that was used for cars that regular people could afford, that would be a far better demonstration.

That, and I wonder if it adheres any bit to the rule of the workers being able to afford it - or if they have to settle for the typical I4 golfcart of Europe.

Here's a video of another high tech auto assembly plant: Fords Camacari assembly plant in Brazil.

So that's what passes for a golfcart down there.

I wonder if they have their own Ford Security to commit thuggery on behalf of the company should workers attempt to become more than just slaves.

That kind of supplier integration is a threat as well, for it makes it easier for Ford to treat workers worse by dividing them up.

Not to worry, no UAW workers were harmed in the making of this film. Neither were any of the thousands of Brazilians who now have good jobs thanks to the UAWs greed and stupidity.

My point is that they have somewhere where the Battle of the Overpass doesn't go in the worker's favor, but that the people & photographs get disappeared. Thus all you might see are happy people with trains all running on time, much like a Potemkin Village.

to be fair, two things that have been the initial focus of unions in the US - health care and retirement pensions are not major union issues in many other countries that have universal health care and their own version of social security - and both are entirely portable from one job to the next.

but I had a similar reaction when looking at the video.. I think even "assembly" work is not THAT "clean" but all those car parts that are part of the assembly process are done in steel mills and stamping plants... which are far different looking that the process shown in the videos.

It's for their Phaeton, one of the few models of VW's lineup that isn't a golfcart. Safe to say it costs a ton.

England looks to US sports to add glitz to FA Cup

By ROB HARRIS

updated 7:56 p.m. ET Jan. 26, 2012

LONDON - Seeking to restore the allure of the FA Cup, English soccer is looking to American sports to see how some glitz can be added to the final of world soccer's oldest domestic cup competition.

Once the main event in the English soccer calendar and a must-see TV event globally, some of the cup's appeal has been lost as the more lucrative Premier League and Champions League appear to be outshining the 140-year competition.

Wembley Stadium has staged NFL regular-season games for five years, giving a glimpse of how the FA Cup final could be spiced up with more entertainment and glamor there.

"We are always learning, we are investing more internal marketing resources alongside that (broadcaster) ITV and Budweiser put in," FA General Secretary Alex Horne said while overlooking the Wembley field.

"As a collective we all think we can make something more of the day of the final and the event ? whether it's on the pitch or the buildup to the event.

"Of course we can learn from the NBA events or the NFL events ... there are many people who do this well."

While looking west across the Atlantic for inspiration on event management, Horne is not losing sight of the competition's big fan base in the East.

"The FA Cup continues to attract huge audiences throughout the world, especially in Asia," Horne said. "China and Thailand are huge markets for English football and the FA Cup in particular. We had a global audience of half a billion for the FA Cup final last year, so we know it's a very relevant product."

But the FA Cup final could be moved from its traditional kickoff time this season in a bid to boost British TV audiences, potentially hitting Asian viewing figures.

The final is set to be at 5:15 p.m. instead of 3 p.m, while talks are under way with the Premier League about preventing a repeat of last season when the match had to be played on the same day as a topflight league program for the first time in 50 years.

That led to Manchester United clinching a record 19th league title just before local rival City ended a 35-year trophy drought by lifting the FA Cup at Wembley.

"The important thing for us is giving (the final) an identity, even if it is not on the last day of the season," Horne said.

The problem of the FA Cup final sharing the day with other big matches in England could be exacerbated by the Champions League final returning to Wembley in 2013 after being staged there last May. UEFA needs the stadium for two weeks before the match.

But ahead of the fourth round this weekend, the FA has sought to highlight the enduring value of the cup, with a study showing that clubs have collectively earned around $1 billion over the past 10 years in prize money, TV payments and ticket revenue.

Such rewards can have a transformational effect on teams ? particularly those lower down the pecking order.

"When Burton secured a replay at Old Trafford (against Manchester United in 2006) they earned $1.1 million in that year," Horne said. "That enabled them to pay off the debt on their stadium, invest in playing talent and ultimately progress into the Football League.

"Crawley last year earned $2.4 million from the competition, including a 1-million pound ($1.6 million) payday at Old Trafford."

The FA Cup is in the first year of a $38 million, three-year title sponsorship deal with American beer brand Budweiser.

Virgin America honors Steve Jobs at 30,000 feet with tribute jet (Yahoo! News)

The Steve Job's quote was chosen from an internal competition to name the plane

List?Virgin America's new plane as one of the latest additions to the increasing number of Steve Jobs tributes that include a?posthumous Grammy, a?Mythbusters-style documentary, and a?7' bronze statue. The U.S. airline had the popular Steve Jobs quote "Stay Hungry, Stay Foolish" painted on the side of an?Airbus A320.?This specific quote was chosen among the list of entries for the company's plane naming contest.

Jobs uttered the phrase back in 2005 while giving a?commencement address at Stanford University, although it originally appeared on the back cover of a 1960's American counterculture publication called?Whole Earth Catalog. "On the back cover of [Whole Earth Catalog's] final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: "Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish." It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself," Jobs said.

It's not too surprising for the company to come up with a Steve Jobs tribute. Virgin America identifies as a?tech-forward company, and offers?fleet-wide wifi as well as touchscreen displays and power outlets on board. Virgin Group head honcho,?Sir?Richard Branson, is also a?known Apple fan.

Yemen's leader allowed to come to US (AP)

WASHINGTON ? The Obama administration will allow Yemen's outgoing president to come to the U.S. temporarily for medical treatment, a move aimed at easing the political transition in Yemen, a key counterterrorism partner.

A senior administration official said Ali Abdullah Saleh would travel to New York this week, and probably stay in the U.S. until no later than the end of February. U.S. officials believe Saleh's exit from Yemen could lower the risk of disruptions in the lead-up to presidential elections planned there on Feb. 21.

A presidential spokesman in Yemen said Saleh had left the capital of Sanaa earlier Sunday on a jet headed for the Persian Gulf sultanate of Oman. An official close to Saleh, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the trip, said the president would undergo medical exams in Oman before heading to the U.S.

The U.S. official did not say whether Saleh planned to return to Yemen, Oman or elsewhere after finishing his treatment in the U.S. The official was not authorized to discuss details about Saleh and spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Yemeni embassy in Washington said Saleh planned to return home in February to attend a swearing-in ceremony for the country's newly elected president.

The mercurial Saleh, who ruled Yemen for more than three decades, agreed to transfer power to his vice president late last year in exchange for immunity from prosecution. He had faced months of protests calling for his ouster, to which the Yemeni government responded with a bloody crackdown, leaving hundreds of protesters dead and sparking wider violence in the capital with rival militia.

Even after agreeing to leave power, Saleh continued to wield his influence behind the scenes, and U.S. officials believed getting him out of Yemen was necessary in order to ensure the February elections took place. The U.S. also worried about instability in a nation grappling with growing extremism, including the dangerous al-Qaida branch known as al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula.

Still, Saleh's request last month for a U.S. visa put the Obama administration in the awkward position of either having to bar a friendly president from U.S. soil or risking appearing to harbor an autocrat with blood on his hands.

As U.S. officials weighed Saleh's request, they sought assurances that he would not seek political asylum or any type of permanent relocation in the U.S.

"We wanted to make sure that there was an understanding that it would be for medical purposes and that's what it is for," John Brennan, President Barack Obama's top counterterrorism adviser, said Sunday.

Saleh was badly burned and wounded during a June rocket attack on his compound in Yemen. He sought medical treatment in neighboring Saudi Arabia for three months. American officials had hoped he would remain there, but the Yemeni leader returned and violence worsened anew.

Protesters and human rights groups have criticized Saleh's immunity clause and insisted he stand trial for his alleged role in protester deaths.

Brennan said there was a divide in Yemen over Saleh's future, with some Yemenis supporting Saleh's decision to seek medical treatment in the U.S. In the short-term, he said, it was imperative to ensure that the February elections take place.

"We thought it was important, given where Yemen is right now as far as moving forward with its political transition, to do what we can to support the government and the elections that are scheduled for the 21st of February, and that seems to be on track," he said.

Yemeni Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi is expected to be rubber-stamped as the country's new leader in the elections, in which he is expected to be the only candidate.

Brennan spoke with Hadi on Sunday, and told him the U.S. was encouraged by his leadership during a difficult period of transition. With fresh demonstrations likely in the weeks leading up to the elections, Brennan urged Hadi to ensure that Yemeni security forces exercise restraint.

The Obama administration's approval of Saleh's visa brought back memories from three decades ago, when President Jimmy Carter allowed the exiled shah of Iran into the U.S. for medical treatment. The decision contributed to rapidly worsening relations between Washington and Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini's revolution in Tehran, with Iranian students occupying the U.S. Embassy in Iran a month later.

Fifty-two American hostages were held for 444 days in response to Carter's refusal to send the shah back to Iran for trial.

Israel welcomes EU sanctions on Iran (AP)

JERUSALEM ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is welcoming a decision by the European Union to impose an oil embargo on Iran as part of wider sanctions over Iran's nuclear program.

Netanyahu called the embargo "a step in the right direction." He was speaking at a Monday meeting of his Likud Party.

Israel and the West accuse Iran of developing nuclear weapons. Iran denies that.

Israel views Iran as an existential threat because of its nuclear and missile programs, references to Israel's destruction by the Iranian president and Tehran's support of militants in Gaza and Lebanon.

Netanyahu has said he hopes stepped-up international sanctions will persuade Iran to give up its nuclear program. Israel has not ruled out the possibility of attacking Iran.

Ahoy there.

1) What's your username? 'sup. My username is MissDred. Um... Well, I used to go by Dreddeh a long, long, long time ago. Back when I used to pretend to be a guy because roleplaying a guy when you were actually a girl was considered weird when I started. I don't think I was very good at it, though. So, anyway, I am embracing my femininity this time round!

2) How'd you find this place? It was recommended to me by someone who had had it recommended to her. I was recently considering getting back into roleplaying after an absence of three or four years and I asked her for some good sites to use.

3) How long have you roleplayed on forums or chat? On what sites? Did you start with tabletop games or such? Nah, I totally started on Neopets. =p Back when I was 14. Oh god, I was bad back then. I think my very first character went to a gifted boarding school and had a pack of wolves that protected her from evil and she could basically control everything... I quickly learned from my mistake!

4) In coming to RPG, what've you been looking for specifically? A new home for roleplay? Better roleplay? Well, I don't write any more since I stopped roleplaying and I miss being creative. I filled the void with videogames for a while but whilst I still love videogames, you get a lot of douches on multiplayer games, and I miss interacting with people.

5) What kinds of roleplay are you interested in? Fantasy? Sci-fi? Go in-depth about it if you want. Oh, definitely fantasy and sci-fi roleplays. I love the idea of creating my own world. Unfortunately, when I used to roleplay, everyone I knew just wanted their characters to sleep together, and roleplay plots were specifically designed to encourage this. No one was interested in libraries that were actually prisons for storybook characters; or invisible friends that killed people; or worlds colliding and bleeding into one another. I'm a lover of steampunk, so the idea that I'm brewing currently for my foray back into roleplaying is very much up that street.

6) What're your hobbies? Do you collect rocks or mount insects? Standard hobbies really... I read, write, draw (slowly learning how to use my graphics tablet), I listen to music (mainly ska, a bit of punk, a lot of rock) and dance around my room when no one's looking, I watch TV/movies, I bake cakes/cupcakes/cookies/brownies...

7) What's something you're good at besides writing? Maybe you're on the volleyball team or you're a quick learner? Maybe you play the flute or can fold up chairs amazingly fast? xD I work in a bookshop and have spent many years working in bookshops... I have a crazy memory for author names or books. I am quite often able to predict questions that people are going to ask before they've asked them. So, I'll be in situations like the following:

[looking at crime books with a customer]
Customer: Oh, who's that guy...
Me: Stieg Larsson.
Customer: ??
Me: Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? It was written by Stieg Larsson.
Customer: ...yes...

Um, otherwise.. I'm pretty good at drawing. Well, copying anyway. I used to do challenges on the gaming community I was on, where people would ask me to draw things for them. It's harder on a tablet but I'm getting there.

8) Do you have any friends here at RPG that invited you here? Would you want to make more friends while you're here? That's pretty much exactly why I'm here!

And lastly...

9) Do we get cookies for looking through your thread and saying hello? No... But you can have a slice of the carrot cake I baked on Friday if you like?
