Thriving Amid An Explosion of UDID Alternatives

udid-explosionThe mobile app industry is in a state of confusion in the wake of Apple?s recent measures to wean developers from the UDID (Unique Device Identifier), a function broadly used for determining the effectiveness of mobile advertising. In the short term, it seems that notions of an imminent Apple ban on use of UDIDs are premature. However, most in the market have concluded that they need to move toward new methods of marketing attribution for iOS device based advertising. The key for entrepreneurs and mobile app brands is moving to alternatives that will best allow their businesses to thrive. Here are the alternatives and here's how pick which ones you should use:

How Technology Can Solve The Financial Industry?s Deficit Of Trust

Wall-Street-BullTo say Wall Street currently suffers from a deficit of trust would be an understatement. In the last few years alone, the government had to bail out Wall Street to the tune of $700 billion, Madoff and Stanford bilked investors of billions, and ex-Goldman executive Greg Smith?s damning op-ed in the New York Times gave everyday people a glimpse into Wall Street?s profits over people mentality.

Frank Mir will now face Junior dos Santos for the belt at UFC 146

After Alistair Overeem's license was called into question by the Nevada Athletic Commission because of results of a testosterone screening, the UFC has changed the heavyweight bout at UFC 146 on May 26. Now former champion Frank Mir will face current champ Junior dos Santos for the belt. UFC president Dana White tweeted the news on Friday night.

In early April, Overeem's pre-fight random drug test raised red flags withe the NAC, who will administer the May fight in Las Vegas. His testosterone levels were well above the approved levels. He is scheduled to to appear before the NAC on Tuesday.

The ongoing question after Overeem's troubles arose was who would replace him on such an important card. This is dos Santos' first title defense since beating Cain Velasquez for the belt in November. Overeem earned the title shot by defeating Brock Lesnar in December.

Though a vocal group of fans pushed for Mark Hunt, who is fighting Stefan Struve at UFC 146, Mir was always the best option. He would not have to change much to prepare for the bout since he was already scheduled to fight Cain Velasquez. Mir won his last three bouts, including a memorable submission of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira at UFC 140.

Abu Dhabi: Growth in business travel : halalfocus.net

Efforts to galvanise business tourism by investing in infrastructure look to be paying off for Abu Dhabi, with figures showing that the number of events taking place in the emirate is on the rise.

Abu Dhabi has significantly expanded its business travel market in recent years, particularly the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) segment.

Forecasts from the Abu Dhabi Tourism and Culture Authority (ADTCA) now estimate that the MICE market should double in value by 2020 to reach almost $1.4bn, with the segment earmarked to play a significant role in Abu Dhabi?s overall economic expansion.

The move to channel funding into infrastructure for business tourism has helped the emirate strengthen its position as an events destination despite tough regional competition. A report commissioned by the ADTCA and issued on March 26 said the direct economic impact of business events was expected to expand 7% annually between now and 2020. The ADTCA has already set itself an ambitious target of increasing four-fold the number of MICE events staged and doubling visitor numbers for the segment by 2015.

Lois Hall, the director of the annual Gulf Incentive, Business Travel and Meeting Exhibition (GIBTM), which is held annually in Abu Dhabi, believes that the rolling out of new infrastructure in the emirate has provided the foundations for growth in the emirate?s MICE segment.

?Abu Dhabi?s business tourism, meetings and incentive infrastructure has expanded significantly over the past year,? she said in an interview in the March edition of Travel and Tourism News. ?Business tourism currently accounts for approximately 70% of Abu Dhabi?s hotel guest profile, with 10% of this emanating from the MICE segment.?

While the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, which is the largest venue of its kind in the Middle East, remains a popular choice for major events in the emirate, a number of hotels have added conference and exhibition halls to their facilities as they look to capitalise on growth in the market.

Omer Kaddouri, the chief operating officer at Rotana Hotels, said MICE was a core component of the group?s business plan. ?Everyone?s after MICE,? he said in an interview with UAE daily The National on March 27. ?MICE brings volume of business, it brings food and beverage, [and] MICE fills the rooms.?

He added that with competition in the domestic market rising, prompted in part by a wave of newly opened hotels and venues, events organisers were likely to find Abu Dhabi more affordable as a meetings destination.

While Abu Dhabi has to vie with its regional competitors for a larger slice of the MICE market, the emirate has been able to use its position as the capital to its advantage. But competition still remains tough across the region, particularly from Dubai, which began building up its services sector and positioning itself within the international MICE segment several years ago.

A report produced last year by Reed Travel Exhibitions and meetme magazine ranked Dubai just ahead of Abu Dhabi as the top Middle East and North Africa MICE destination, while other countries in the region, including Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, are working to promote themselves in the global events market. Qatar in particular is set to gain media coverage after winning the rights to stage the 2022 World Cup, which will provide it with plenty of opportunities to showcase its hospitality facilities.

While prospects for business tourism in Abu Dhabi look promising, concern remains that the segment could yet feel the ripple effects of the global economic crisis if bookings drop, particularly from markets in Europe. To date, the impact of the European debt crisis appears to have been minimal, with figures issued by the ADTCA in late March showing that hotel guest numbers were up 16% for January and February in a year-on-year comparison.

While the MICE segment?s performance could waver if international firms are forced to curb spending on trade fairs and conferences, industry players will be hoping that the resilience displayed by the market so far suggests business leaders are giving a priority to maintaining their profile on the global stage, even in tough times.

PFT: Irsay basically confirms Luck will be No. 1

pashx-largeGetty Images

On Friday, NFL general counsel Jeff Pash addressed a group of Associated Press sports editors regarding the still-lingering bounty scandal.? Per the Associated Press, Pash criticized the union for protecting the Saints players who were involved in the bounty scandal at the expense of those who were the targets of it.

?They were protective of the players who could be disciplined in the next phase of this,? Pash said.? ?That was their focus, on defending or excusing the conduct of players involved in this program.? That?s unfortunate; the players who could have been or even were injured are also members of the union.

?It?s their players who put the safety of other players in jeopardy.?

That?s fine, but the NFL has no legitimate reason to publicly point out the conflict of interest that arises whenever a member of a union engages in behavior that may infringe on the rights of another union member.? Has the NFL ever criticized the NFLPA for defending the rights of steroids users whose juiced-up bodies put other union members at greater risk of injury?? No, and the NFL shouldn?t start trying to drive a wedge within the rank and file now.

The simply reality is that the players accused of involvement in the bounty scandal have rights.? The NFLPA must defend those rights.? And the NFL knows this.

?Given the current dynamic, we have an obligation to ensure that players have fair due process and we protect them from the league,? NFLPA spokesman George Atallah told the Associated Press. ?If the league was more forthcoming in the information they have related to what they are alleging [took] place, perhaps we could be in a better position to deal with this issue in a collaborative manner.?

So why is the NFL publicly twisting the NFLPA?s tail?? The NFL should instead be issuing discipline.? After all, it?s been seven weeks since the NFL disclosed the bounty scandal.? Punishment has been meted out and the appeals have been finalized for the non-players involved.? The league?s inaction as to the players coupled with gratuitous rhetoric apparently arising from the union?s justified refusal to pre-approve any discipline serves only to create the impression that the NFL realizes that, against the players, the case may not be as strong as the NFL has characterized it to be.

?I do think there will be player discipline that is appropriate based on the facts,? Pash said.? ?That?s important because it reinforces our shared accountability here.? What our investigators uncovered is a serious violation of the rules and our player safety policies.?

Fine.? Then issue the discipline.? The Saints and any team that employs members of the Saints defense from 2009 through 2011 has a right to know before next week?s draft whether and to what extent those players may need to be replaced.

With each passing day without an announcement of discipline against the players, we?re becoming more inclined to believe that, as to the players, the NFL will have a hard time making stick the notion that the cartoonish rhetoric from former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams actually translated into heinous actions on the field.

The NFL can commence the process of dispelling those beliefs by imposing the discipline.

Nobel laureate Shirin Ebadi speaks out against Iran sanctions

Shirin Ebadi, the first Iranian to win a Nobel Peace Prize, also spoke with the Monitor about her fight for human rights in Iran and challenged the supreme leader's role.

"If you can't eliminate injustice, at least tell everyone about it."?

Nobel Laureate and human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi begins her book, The Golden Cage: Three Brothers, Three Choices, One Destiny, with this famous quote from Iranian sociologist Ali Shariati.?

It is also how Ms. Ebadi has chosen to live her life, even if it means self-imposed exile.

?In Iran, human rights activists are either in prison or they are incommunicado, meaning no one can talk to them and it's basically impossible for them to have any activity. Unfortunately at the present time, a lot of people ... are afraid to talk. This is why I've remained outside Iran, and work for Iran from where I am,? says Ebadi, who moved to London after Iran's contested 2009 presidential elections. ?If something happens in the world, it has to be told so that others will find out about it. It must be known by the world.?

Ebadi, a prominent critic of the Iranian regime, has lived abroad ever since accusations of fraud in the 2009 prompted unprecedented dissent, and the government cracked down hard.

But despite her animosity towards Iran's government, the Iranian human rights lawyer and activist says that the harsh economic sanctions currently imposed against Iran have been misguided. Intended to pressure Tehran into making concessions on its controversial nuclear program, the sanctions are achieving more harm than good and failing to weaken the Iranian regime, according to the Nobel laureate.

?I do not agree with sanctions that hurt people,? says Ebadi in a phone interview a day after April 14 talks between Tehran and the international powers known as P5+1 about Iran's nuclear program.

Though talks ended on a positive note, with negotiations slated to continue in Baghdad on May 23, Ms. Ebadi claims it's too quick to predict if and how Iran's nuclear negotiators will ultimately follow through.

?We have to see what the results are. Up to today, they've always used negotiations to buy time. In this regard, we have to wait for the second round of negotiations.?

But while the bulk of international attention on Iran is focused on its nuclear program, human rights violations in the Islamic Republic often go relatively unnoticed.

In 2011, Iran executed more than 360 people, making it the No. 2 country for capital punishment after China, with nearly nine times more executions than the US, according to the Guardian.

Since Iran's disputed 2009 presidential election, the Iranian government has engaged in a broad crackdown on journalists, political opposition figures, activists, and students. As of late 2011, 49 journalists and bloggers remained in prison, and lawyers seeking to represent rights activists have faced mounting pressure from security authorities, with a number of prominent lawyers currently facing stiff prison sentences or long-term bans from practicing law, according to a 2012 Human Rights Watch report.

Day 111: ZuzkaLight review: Have you been Z ... - FemFusion Fitness

As I have stated before, this is a women?s interest blog with varying info about fitness, women?s health, food/nutrition, and even a bit of fashion and beauty thrown in the mix, but I must warn you: For the next few weeks I am going to focus heavily on FOOD.?And I am SO EXCITED. I have been hard at work on super-simple Paleo-friendly recipes that the whole family will love. Most of my upcoming recipes consist of only three to four ingredients, and ALL ingredients will be readily available at any grocery store. Not just fancy ?gourmet? stores or ?health-food? stores ? no, no no. We?re talking ingredients that are available at your local Super-Wal-Mart or Safeway (or better yet, your local farmers market!). So stay tuned: More info about my super-simple recipe series is coming next week. Check back, and tell your friends! Your support via comments and Facebook ?likes? feeds my soul and gives me the encouragement needed to keep posting daily. Because it?s a lot of work.

Until then, it?s important for me to get some fitness info out there, especially since the original focus of this blog was women?s health and fitness!

Have you heard of BodyRock.tv? I had? But I didn?t know much about it until recently. First, let me state this (and?I know I?m not the only female who feels this way): Women can be EVEN MORE FUN to look at than men. A beautiful female is a sight to behold, and an athletic, toned, fit female is inspirational and motivating (to me). So back to?BodyRock: Although I love seeing lean, athletic female physiques I was a little turned off by the blatant sexualization of the men and women who demo the exercises on BodyRock.

Check it out:

But what BodyRock offers is important, because it highlights power moves, which?many women stop doing?as they age. They might have played high-intensity sports in high school or college, and even taken a few bootcamp-style fitness classes in their twenties and thirties, but in general women stop the ?hardcore? exercises that make sweat pour, the heart pound, and the breathing labored. I?m no exception: I also prefer a more comfortable ? shall we say ? form of fitness (such as yoga, walking, a bit of weight training, and my FemFusion classes, which are intense but low-impact). However, a few weeks ago I started adding one to two ?power? sessions each week and it has (already!) done wonders in terms of sculpting my muscles, revving my metabolism, and giving me energy that lasts throughout the day.

But I don?t do BodyRock. I?ve found something better!?She goes by the name of ZuzkaLight.

Zuzka?s ?real name? (well, maybe real) is Zuzana, and she was actually the co-founder of BodyRock when BodyRock started a few years ago. Recently, she left BodyRock and went in a (slightly) different direction. She started her own fitness ?channel? on YouTube, which you can access and subscribe to by clicking here. My opinion is that Zuzana?s workouts are BETTER than those found on BodyRock.tv, and here?s why:

  • Although Zuzana is a bombshell and it?s VERY CLEAR that she is capitalizing on her looks, the filming is far less focused on capturing boob and butt shots. Rather, the filming clearly captures the exercise session. The exercise is the star, rather than T & A. Well, that point may be debatable, but it?s the view I?m taking.
  • From what I have seen, Zuzana tends to use less equipment than the videos on BodyRock. I haven?t done all of her workouts? I?ve actually only done two of them over and over. When she does use equipment it tends to be readily available items such as medicine balls and weights rather than specific equipment pushed by the website (as in BodyRock, where they have an entire section devoted to buying the equipment they use in their vids).
  • Zuzana?s manner is sweet and encouraging. She makes it clear that she?s working hard and motivates her followers to keep up with her.
  • The best part: In each video, she goes through the entire workout with you. They tend to be 10-15 minutes long. With the BodyRock vids I?ve viewed, they just show you clips of the intervals you?re supposed to do and then you do them on your own, with your own interval timer. For those of us who don?t have an interval timer, Zuzana?s vids are nice? You can use hers. I?m still a proponent of rest-based interval training as described by the Metabolic Effect Diet gurus, Jade and Keoni Teta, who encourage you to rest only when you need to and pushing when you don?t need to, but Zuzana?s workouts are intense enough that I always need to rest when her interval timer says it?s ?rest time.?)

The cons:

  • Safety may be an issue, especially for viewers who are just starting out in terms of fitness/strengthening. Her routines are extremely challenging and seem to be tailored to athletes and people who are pretty far along in their fitness journey(s). In the videos I?ve watched, Zuzana?doesn?t provide many modifications, and when she does, she usually provides the modifications (i.e. to make the moves easier/less challenging) toward the end of the routine when she ? herself ? is getting tired. I?ll tell ya: If you?re a beginner, you?re going to be tired far before she is and?from the beginning you may not be doing the exercise properly due to weakness or lack of stamina/endurance.
  • Her workouts contain a lot of high impact movements, which may be problematic for women with pelvic floor dysfunction. If you have pelvic organ prolapse or incontinence issues, I recommend talking to your doctor or women?s health physical therapist before trying her high-impact moves. If you ARE going to try her stuff, remember to ZIP UP especially before jumping, etc., or exercises that require a lot of balance.

My take on Zuzana vs. BodyRock? Zuzana wins, hands-down. :)

Nikon D3200 pics appear on Flickr, make a slightly noisy entrance

Ahead of getting trigger happy with a fully-working D3200 -- rather than the pre-production unit from our hands-on -- we've been checking out some official 24-megapixel samples on Flickr. To our eyes, the images befit the smaller pixel size, namely sharp and high-res, but with a good dollop of noise on the side. Albeit completely unscientific, a blowup compared to an image from the similarly priced Sony NEX-5N looks grainier at the same 1600 ISO. On the plus side, the JPEGs show almost zero compression artifacts, so budget-minded shooters could easily print poster-sized images -- of course, providing they have enough light for a low ISO shot in the first place.
