Panasonic teams up with NHK on 145-inch 8K Super Hi-Vision plasma TV (Update: video)

We thought the 8K 85-inch Super Hi-Vision LCD we saw during CES was impressive, but Japanese broadcaster NHK is already looking to surpass that by going even bigger. To that end it worked with Panasonic (above: that's Panasonic's Keishi Kubota on the left, Yoshio Ito of NHK on the right) to create this 145-inch prototype plasma, unveiled today as an example of the kind of displays we can expect to see once broadcasts jump to the higher resolution some day. The world's first self-illuminating Super Hi-Vision TV, it features every pixel of its expected 8K resolution -- 7,680 x 4,320. After working for months on smaller (only 85- or 103-inch) 4K plasmas, the two companies had to come up with an entirely new drive method for the display that works by scanning the pixels vertically to achieve a uniform picture quality. The NHK plans to show off the new display at its open house in May, although we're a bit more interested to see if we can watch the Olympics on it this summer. Check the gallery below for a few more pictures from DigInfo.TV's Ryo Osuga, or hit the more coverage link for a breakdown of the difficulties encountered in building a high resolution display that's this massive.

Update: Now with video from DigInfo.tv.

Oracle v. Google trial reveals renders of original Google phone design

Not all the news coming out of Judge Alsup's courtroom concerns IP infringement and dollar signs, as some renders of a never-before-seen Google phone have made their way out of the courtroom and onto the web. It appears that before the T-Mobile G1 came to be, Google had its heart set on a portrait QWERTY design for its initial Android offering -- and different from what was found in the first Android emulator. Evidently, it was slated to pack at least a 200MHz chip, 64MB of RAM and ROM, a miniSD card, 2-megapixel camera with a dedicated shutter button and a non-touch-enabled QVGA display. That's a far cry from modern smartphones, but this thing was set to be sold five years ago, so such meager specs are to be expected. Intrigued? More pictures and details can be found at the source below.

Carlina Duran, Miss Dominican Republic, Stripped of Crown Due to Secret Marriage

Carlina Duran, a 25-year-old stunner who was recently crowned Miss Dominican Republic 2012, has been forced to relinquish her crown she held so dearly.

The reason is simple: She's married and didn't disclose it.

Duran was given the boot as Miss DR after pageant officials say she violated a rule which requires all contestants to be single at the time of the event. Seriously.

Carlina Duran, Miss Dominican Republic

Duran, who owns a spa in Santo Domingo and comes from the town of La Vega, violated the rule that no contestant can have been married or have had a child.

According to reports, Carlina has been married since 2009 and never told anyone about it. She has still not commented on being outed as a better half.

Dominican newspaper Diario Libre reports that a marriage license shows she wed on June 6, 2009. Why should that matter? Your guess is as good as ours.

The crown now goes to the 1st runner-up, Dulcita Lieggi. Take a look at a news report (in Spanish) about the downfall of Carlina and comment below:

iFixit tears open an HP Z1, finds it impossibly easy to repair

iFixit tears open an HP Z1

Those guys and gals at iFixit love nothing more than destroying something beautiful and, in the process, finding out exactly what makes it tick. The latest victim of their reckless deconstructive tendencies is HP's Z1. The all-in-one turns out to be just as beautiful on the inside as it is outside. The components aren't haphazardly tossed inside the tight enclosure or soldered in place. The impressively repairable and replaceable parts all slide out easily, with at most the turn of a few screws. Only the LCD and glass pane posed an obstacle, but even that turned out to be relatively simple to remove. For more photos of the tiny workstation torn asunder, check out the source link.

Justin Bethel, NFL Draft Prospect, Shows Off INSANE Vertical

Justin Bethel, a defensive back from Presbyterian College and NFL draft hopeful, may never make it to the pros - but at least he's made an awesome viral video.

Prepping for workouts he hopes will earn him a spot on an NFL team next fall, the football star was caught on video jumping onto boxes five feet into the air.

That's a vertical leap of 60 inches. Yes, six-zero.

Bethel is a pretty legit player, too. He was named Big South Defensive Player of the Year, recording 87 total tackles with 3.5 tackles for a loss, one sack, a forced fumble, three blocked kicks, four interceptions and a punt return touchdown.

Athletic, competitive and versatile, while possessing strong character, motivation, intelligence and work ethic, some scouts say he could be a draft sleeper.

Here's hoping, if only for more clips like this.
