P2P Storage Startup Space Monkey Raises $2.25M Led By Google Ventures And Venture51

space monkeySpace Monkey, the startup offering a peer-to-peer alternative to cloud storage services like Dropbox, just raised $2.25 million in a seed round of funding. The company says that it's combining the benefits of both local storage and the cloud. Every Space Monkey customer gets their own storage device, so they can access their files without having to worry about download times (which can become an issue when you're talking about large media files like videos). Copies of those files are also distributed in chunks to other Space Monkey devices, allowing for remote access and backup.

Mitt Romney Booed By NAACP Crowd Over Obamacare Comment

Speaking before an already-skeptical NAACP crowd, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney raised eyebrows Wednesday when he said he'd do more for the African-American community than Barack Obama, the nation's first black president.

He then drew jeers when he lambasted Obama's health care law.

After promising to repeal Obamacare, which will help an estimated seven million uninsured African-Americans obtain coverage, he heard it from the audience ...

"If you want a president who will make things better in the African-American community, you are looking at him," Romney unflinchingly told the group.

Pausing as some in the crowd heckled, he added, "You take a look!"

"For real?" yelled someone in the crowd at the annual convention.

The reception was rocky at times, though generally polite as the GOP hopeful sought to woo a Democratic bloc that voted heavily for Obama in 2008.

They will undoubtedly do so again, but Romney gets credit for even showing to an event that could not be farther from his political wheelhouse.

Wildland firefighters win federal health benefits

DENVER (AP) ? President Barack Obama will make federal health insurance available to about 8,000 temporary wildland firefighters, a White House official said Tuesday.

Despite the grueling and dangerous work they do, the 8,000 firefighters aren't covered by federal health insurance because they are temporary seasonal employees. Under federal personnel rules, such employees can't buy into federal health insurance plans.

The White House official said firefighters will get access to federal insurance plans this month. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because Obama's decision hasn't been formally announced.

Temporary seasonal firefighters make up more than half of the 15,000 wildland firefighters on the federal payroll this busy wildfire season.

Obama's decision was first reported by The Denver Post and came after stories by The Post, The Associated Press and others about the firefighters' dilemma.

Members of a South Dakota-based hotshot crew who fought massive wildfires in Colorado and other states this year launched a petition drive seeking health benefits, largely out of anger over a colleague who was left with a $70,000 hospital bill after his son was born prematurely.

Their petition quickly gathered more than 125,000 signatures, bolstered by this year's historic fire season in the West and the ongoing national debate over health care.

"That's amazing. Wow," said Constance Van Kley, wife of firefighter Nathan Ochs, when she was told of Obama's decision. The couple had no health insurance when their son, Rudy, was born seven weeks premature in 2008.

The hospital forgave most of their $70,000 bill, but it was their experience that spurred Ochs, John Lauer and other firefighters to start their petition drive.

"When we were talking about it in our kitchen 2? months ago, John thought he'd be working on it for about a year and there was a 5 percent chance it would go anywhere at all," Van Kley said.

"It makes me feel really hopeful that you can look at a problem, see a problem, and get this kind of response in this amount of time," she said. "We feel really heartened to know that people care about the work that firefighters do."

Rep. Diana DeGette, D-Colo., introduced legislation Tuesday that would give the firefighters access to federal insurance benefits, but Obama's move apparently makes that unnecessary.

The White House official who confirmed Obama's decision said the president had ordered the Agriculture and Interior departments, which hire the bulk of federal firefighters, and the Office of Personnel Management to open the insurance plans to firefighters.

DeGette said she was elated by the decision.

"In recent weeks, this fight has clearly reminded all of us of what we owe to the people whose sacrifice and personal risk protect our homes, our families, and our communities," she said in a written statement.

Firefighters are covered by workers compensation if they're hurt on the job, but that doesn't cover offseason health problems or help their families.

The National Federation of Federal Employees, a labor union, estimates it would cost the federal government $17.5 million a year to pay its share of premiums for seasonal firefighters working for the Forest Service, which employs about 70 percent of federal firefighters. The rest work for the Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Indian Affairs and other agencies.

Since 2003, 157 people have died battling wildfires in the U.S., according to the International Association of Wildland Fire. Injury statistics were unavailable.

Snowbird Tip: Go for Deductibles | Travel Insurance File

The biggest cost saving you are likely to get when buying travel insurance depends on your deductible. Don?t be timid: go for the biggest you can afford. A $500, or $1000, or even $5000 deductible can save you a lot of money, especially if you think of it as an amortization over time.

If you shop around, you can find many policies that will give you up to 20 or even 30 percent premium reductions for? substantial deductibles.? If you take such deductibles four or five years without generating a claim, you will have earned enough savings to get one year free.? And according to all of the statistics available, if you are in reasonably good health, your chances of going that long without a claim are better than even. The great majority of travellers do not encounter claims, even for long trips.

Consider the basics: a deductible is that share of any medical claim you are obligated to pay to the hospital or doctor before your insurer?s share kicks in. If you have a zero deductible, you pay nothing: but your premium offers no discount?it?s full price. If you have a $100 deductible,? your discount is minimal, but it?s worth it to the insurer because the manpower required to handle a small $100 claim costs a lot more.

If you are prepared to pay a $1000 deductible, your premium may be discounted by perhaps 10 percent, and depending on how long you are travelling and how much your premium is, that savings might be quite considerable.

You have to pay that first $1000, but if your hospital bill is $100,000, your share is going to look pretty small and you?ll be happy enough to pay it.? After all, the hospital staff may have saved your life, and what price would you put on that?

A key element to consider in deciding on deductibles is your own economic comfort level.? And here you need to be honest with yourself.? If you are going for a six month vacation to a foreign country (and Florida and Arizona are in foreign countries), and you honestly believe you can?t afford $500 or $1000 in the event you encounter a life-saving emergency, are you wise in taking that vacation in the first place?

Certainly, travel insurance is designed to protect you against economic calamity should you become seriously ill far? from home, but that doesn?t mean you have to pay more for it than you should.

If, as a experienced traveller,? you can look back on a five-year period during which you saved 15-20-or 30 percent on your premiums by taking modest deductibles each year, without having paid out anything for medical bills, you may be very pleasantly surprised at what you have earned.? And if you?re just starting out your snowbird ?career?, this is the time to put that foundation in place.

Good snowbirding takes planning.? Travel insurance is fundamental to that plan.

All travel insurers advertising on this site meet TravelinsuranceFile?s acceptability criteria for out-of-country health benefits for Canadian residents. All offer savings for deductibles on annual and single trip plans. Some will also be offering early bird rates. It?s not too early to start your shopping.?

(AP) ? The Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attack is by far the most memorable moment shared by television viewers during the past 50 years, a study released on Wednesday concluded.

The only thing that came close was President John F. Kennedy's assassination and its aftermath in 1963, but that was only for the people aged 55 and over who experienced those events as they happened instead of replayed as an historical artifact.

Sony Electronics and the Nielsen television research company collaborated on the survey. They ranked TV moments for their impact not just by asking people if they remembered watching them, but if they recalled where they watched it, who they were with and whether they talked to other people about what they had seen.

By that measure, the Sept. 11 tragedy was nearly twice as impactful as the second-ranked moment, which was the coverage of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Minutes after the first airplane struck New York's World Trade Center on a late summer morning, television networks began covering the events continuously and stayed with them for days.

The other biggest TV events, in order, were the 1995 verdict in O.J. Simpson's murder trial, the Challenger space shuttle explosion in 1986 and the death of Osama bin Laden last year, the survey found.

Sony was interested in the study for clues on consumer interests and behaviors and found "that television is really the grandmother of all the social devices," said Brian Siegel, vice president of television business for the company.

Going into the study, Siegel said he had anticipated that entertainment events like the final episode of "M-A-S-H" (ranked No. 42), the Beatles' appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" (No. 43) and the "Who shot J.R.?" episode of "Dallas" (No. 44) would rank higher. Instead, television coverage of news events made the biggest difference in viewers' lives.

The Super Bowl is annually the most-watched TV event, with this year's game between the N.Y. Giants and New England Patriots setting an all-time record with 111 million viewers. The memories don't seem to linger, however: the top-ranked Super Bowl Sunday event in Sony's study came in 2004 and had nothing to do with football. It was Janet Jackson's wardrobe malfunction (No. 26).

Men and women agreed on the three most impactful television events ? Sept. 11, Katrina and Simpson. After that, some of the interests diverged.

For example, women ranked the 1997 funeral of Princess Diana as the fourth most memorable event, while men put that at No. 23. Women ranked last year's death of Whitney Houston at No. 5, with men judging it No. 21.

Similarly, the 2003 bombing of Baghdad at the start of the Iraq War was seen as the No. 14 most impactful moment by men, and No. 37 among women. Men were also far more struck by boxer Mike Tyson biting off a piece of Evander Holyfield's ear.

The passage of time has also diluted some moments once thought as unforgettable, simply because succeeding generations have no personal memory of them. Man's first moon landing in 1969 ranked No. 21.

Age also made a big difference in the survey. JFK's assassination was the second-most impactful TV event among people 55 and over, while for those between 18 and 34, it was the death of Osama bin Laden.

Young people also ranked Barack Obama's Election Night speech in 2008 at No. 3, while that didn't move older viewers quite as much (No. 24).

Simply because of their age, events like the JFK assassination, President Nixon's resignation and the moon landing didn't register at all among viewers 18 to 34. The oldest event to appear in their rankings was the 1980 shooting of John Lennon.

The study was based on an online questionnaire of 1,077 adults selected as a scientific sample from among Nielsen's panel of people measured for television ratings. It was conducted between Feb. 15-17 this year.

The study could be a good baseline for future looks at how television impacts viewers, said Paul Lindstrom, senior vice president for custom research at Nielsen.

"I'd like to see these done on a periodic basis going forward," he said.

Get Excited With These Home Improvement Tips - Boston Garage ...

There is always something that needs done around the house to make it better. Have you been putting one of these projects off? If you?re ready to put your doubts behind you and get to work, this article has some useful advice.

Among the first aspects when taking on a new home repair project is to clear the area of debris and keep it clear. Even a relatively minor home improvement may result in a lot of trash and debris, and if you?re doing any type of demolition, you?re going to have quite a mess on your hands. Deciding on a storage space for this debris in advance and making appropriate disposal arrangements should be done in the project?s planning stages.

Getting a great new look in your kitchen doesn?t require a ton of money and replacing everything. A little paint can make a world of difference. Apply a coat of polish or another kind of finish when you are done painting. Check out the possibilities at various home improvement websites, then go with the one that fits within your style and budget.

When undertaking a home improvement project on your own, make a point of buying high quality materials and tools. Although quality tools are more expensive, it normally will save you money over the course of your home improvement project. Better quality products are longer lasting. It?s not desirable to replace expensive tools frequently.

If you?d like to improve your home?s energy efficiency levels, place weather stripping by your doors and windows. It is a cheap fix that will seal the air leaks around the windows and doors and reduce the cost of heating and cooling your home. It will also make those cold nights a whole lot less chilly indoors.

It may be time to paint the exterior of the home if you are looking for a way to jumpstart home improvements. There is no way to make it more like new than applying a new paint job. To instantly change the look of your home, consider changing the color of the outside of your home.

Home leak about 20 percent of their heat through glass windows. This can be reduced by equipping large windows with a second glaze. Your electricity bills will be lower and you will still be able to have comfort in the worst temperatures.

The lowest price may not be the best deal when it comes to building contractors. You may think you are getting a good deal; however, the ones with the lowest price often will add additional costs as the job progresses. Others will perform shoddy craftsmanship that reflects the price you paid. Study up on the local market rates for the sort of work you need done so that you?ll be able to tell which contractors offer quotes that are too high or too low.

If you are in an area that is prone to flood or hurricanes, it is wise to invest in a set or two of ?hurricane socks?. The design of these fabrics allows them to absorb large amounts of water. Place these at opening points including doors and windows.

When you are doing your planning, make sure you think about how you will get rid of the debris. You have to set aside room for the debris that will result. Know where the debris will go and how you will get rid of it, so that it does not interfere with your work or your life.

This article explained that there are many types of home improvement that can be done without the help of a professional. If you are new to home improvements, it can be scary to think about doing it. Hopefully, the advice provided to you in this article will give you the confidence boost you need to get started on your much needed repairs.
