Sitcom creators mine laughs from their real lives

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP) ? Got a goofy older brother? Parents you still live with even though you're grown up? An unconventional friendship?

If so, you're too late to turn those ideas into a hit sitcom.

But while you comb your life for something else to fuel a comedy that a network will love, consider three fall sitcoms spawned from the personal lives of their creators.

CBS' "Partners" explores the lifelong friendship of Louis, who's gay, and Joe, who's straight, as they navigate their architecture business and their respective romantic ties. Their best-friends dynamic is inspired by the friendship of Max Mutchnick and David Kohan, who met in high school and, after partnering as TV producers, co-created shows including the megahit "Will & Grace."

There's no attempt to hide the lineage of Fox's "Ben & Kate." It's the tale of a freewheeling brother, Ben, who comes back into the life of his single-mother younger sister, Kate, to serve as a surrogate dad while continuing his lifelong role as a mischievous child. The show is based on the relationship of its creator, Dana Fox, with her own big brother, whose name is, yes, Ben.

Meanwhile, ABC's "How to Live with Your Parents for the Rest of Your Life" finds a young mom from a broken marriage seeking refuge at her parents' with her young daughter. It was drawn from the domestic situation of creator Claudia Lonow, who well into adulthood and despite career success (including producing the sitcom "Less than Perfect"), continues to live with parents she describes as "charismatic," ''super entertaining" and "very weird."

"I've been living there for 15 years, and I've been (developing) the show for about 12," Lonow told reporters this week at the Television Critics Association conference.

Like Polly (played by Sarah Chalke), who descends on TV parents Brad Garrett and Elizabeth Perkins, "I did show up at their doorstep and say, 'I hope this isn't a bad time for YOU, because it is for ME.'

"They reacted like any loving mother and stepfather would," Lenow recalled, and took her and her daughter in.

"We slept in the weight room on a cot for a while. And then, when it was time for my daughter to go to grammar school, I bought a house with them. I know it was crazy," she said with a laugh. "It's like there should be a show about it!"

Sitcoms that smack of autobiography are nothing new, of course. "I Love Lucy" 60 years ago took its cue from the show-biz-infused marital life of Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz.

But Dana Fox has been gathering material for "Ben and Kate" since the cradle thanks to her brother, Ben, who's two years her senior.

She describes him as a "Ferris Bueller-type guy ... a really, really smart guy who intentionally does incredibly dumb things that would get us into so much trouble.

"He doesn't think a lot before he jumps," she said, "but he usually has a totally bizarre logic to all of his behavior."

Item: Once when they were kids, their mom came home to find the whole house smelling like a dead animal. Ben had put his down-feather pillow in the microwave for 10 minutes on low, "to heat it up because he was cold."

Fox took pains to say that on "Ben and Kate" the siblings' relationship (portrayed by Nat Faxon and Dakota Johnson) more closely mirrors her connection with Ben Fox when they were somewhat younger. She stressed that, in truth, her brother grew up, married, had two children and has become a responsible father, though she added, "I give a ton of credit to his wife, who's a psychologist."

But if real-life Ben settled down a bit ? with a successful career in advertising ? he remains a cutup. He still calls his sister "Phlegm-er," she reports, "which is totally disgusting and super humiliating." And she says that, while he's delighted about the show, he's not surprised he earned such a tribute. Instead, he marvels "that it hasn't happened before now."

"The Partners" is a buddy comedy about a gay guy and a straight guy (played by Michael Urie and David Krumholtz) who are best friends. It was created by a gay guy and a straight guy who have been best friends since they were teens.

"I think every gay man should have a straight man in his life," said Mutchnick, who, on realizing in high school he was gay, had a friend in Kohan he could talk about it with. "I was lucky enough that I was able to create a life and a great career with him, too."

But how true-to-life are the sitcom versions of these partners? Mutchnick was asked if, for instance, he's as self-obsessed as the volatile, comical character Louis.

"Absolutely!" Mutchnick fired back, and added instantly, "Do you have any OTHER questions about me?"

Round 15 Football Review - Hatherleigh Sports & Recreation

Versus Kongorong

Our Junior Colts and A Grade had strong wins at Kongorong last weekend, but unfortunately our Senior Colts and Reserves went down fighting against the Hawks.?

The Junior Colts won by 64 points. Sam Sutherland kicked three goals, while Zach Jones kicked two and Lachie Jackman-Tilley, Louis Brown, Tom Jackman-Tilley, Max Telfer and Jack Gray all kicked a goal each. Well done boys!

The Senior Colts fought hard throughout their entire match, but when a few players went down with injuries, they were really up against it and unfortunately lost.

Sam Waring again was a stand out and is turning into a fantastic ruckman. He not only wins the ruck, but he also takes contested marks around the ground. Dillon Jones was great in defence, he stopped many attacks and rebounded strongly with the ball.

Brett Watson was at his consistent best; he worked both ways and found plenty of the ball. While Tyler Snook may not have got gotten many possessions, he worked hard in defence and didn?t give his opponents an inch.

Tom Schulz battled hard all day and got plenty of the ball, again leading by example. In wet and slippery conditions it was important, especially in defence, to have clean skills. This is exactly what Kenty had, he used the ball well and helped turn defence into attack.

Awards: Sam Waring (Seebohm?s Sportspower), Dylan Jones (C. Gilbertson), Brett Watson (G. Nilsson), Tyler Snook (HFC Ladies Committee) and Tom Schulz (HSRC Steak).

It is a very important game this week for the Senior Colts against Kalangadoo and could determine whether we make the finals or not.

The Reserves were greeted by bleary skies that resembled our esteemed President?s eyes after his big day of golf! He knows how he got his headache, but he can?t work out where the gravel rash and twenty cent piece behind his ear came from!

The Reserves took to the field hoping to give the ladder leaders a run for their money. We battled hard all day but no matter how hard we tried it was like they always had two extra players. Sam Fitzgerald led from the front and got plenty of touches all over the ground. Joey rucked well and Tim ?the expectant dad? Loveday showed he is still a classy player in his first game back from injury. Shane ?Casper? Lambert provided the forwards with plenty of opportunities, but in the end we just couldn?t get over the line.

Awards: Sam Fitzgerald (K&S Ampol), Sean Brennan (Dave Reilly?s Panel & Paint), Shane Lambert (Beachport Hotel), and Joe Campbell (Prince of Wales Hotel).

The A Grade needed to win against Kongorong to cement their spot in the top four and ensure they would play finals football this season. In tough conditions and with a few changes to the team, we still managed to play some good football and win the points!

Again, over the course of the game we had a lot of the play, but did not capitalise on it and should have put more scores on the board. Jack Skeer played had a good day in the forward line, leading well and providing us with a good target. Jase Faulkner, Tyler Saunders and Todd Watson had solid games through the middle, providing plenty of drive.

Trav Kneen and Luke Haines stepped up from B Grade for the week and were valuable contributors throughout the course of the game, proving they are both still capable of playing in the later game of the day.

Awards: Mat Faulkner (Millicent Golf), Jason Faulkner (Somerset Hotel), Todd Watson (Beachport Hotel) and Jack Skeer (Prince of Wales Hotel).

We now need to continue to play good team footy as we head into the finals!

GOP Senators Celebrate 'Meat Monday' After USDA's 'Meatless Monday' Mishap

The hubbub over the U.S. Department of Agriculture's retracted tweet supporting "Meatless Mondays" continues.

Last week, Republican Iowa senator Chuck Grassley's made a tongue-in-cheek promise to compensate for the recommendation by eating an extra helping of meat. PETA responded with a death pool, taking bets on how long it would take for Grassley to "succumb to heart disease, diabetes, cancer, or some other meat-related disease."

On Monday, the Iowa lawmaker continued to show his defiance -- this time, with his lunch order. Texas' junior senator John Cornyn posted the below image to his office's Facebook page. The accompanying text reads: "PHOTO: Cornyn, Grassley Celebrate 'Meat Monday:'"

meatless monday

In a press release issued the same day, the senators spoke about the interests of the American agricultural community:

?In some of the toughest times they?ve seen in recent memory, Texas cattle ranchers and farmers deserve an Administration who works with them, not one who undermines them with boneheaded decisions from bureaucrats in Washington,? said Sen. Cornyn.

?This is a reminder to USDA that it?s supposed to advocate for American agriculture, not against it,? Sen. Grassley said.

The piles of wrapped meat were ordered from Hill Country, a New York-based barbecue outfit located in D.C.'s Penn Quarter neighborhood not far from the senators' Capitol Hill office.

If you're in the neighborhood -- and you have a the proper clearance -- you might stand a chance at some leftovers. According to The Hill:

A staffer said that there was "plenty to go around" for the two senators' employees. The lunch included a total of 52 orders of barbecue beef sandwiches, brisket, sausage and ribs, as well as sides of cornbread and macaroni and cheese.

VATICAN'S OLYMPIC SPIRIT

Even the Vatican is getting into the Olympic spirit.

The official Vatican newspaper ran a glowing review of Friday's opening ceremony and published an op-ed piece by the British ambassador to the Holy See. The subject: his family connection to Eric Liddell, one of the most memorable Olympians of all time.

Liddell was famously depicted in the 1981 film "Chariots of Fire." He was a Scottish missionary who pulled out of the 100 heat at the 1924 Olympics because it took place on a Sunday. He went on to win gold in the 400.

In the L'Osservatore Romano piece, Ambassador Nigel Baker recalled how his great uncle Noel was serving in China in the Welsh Regiment of the British Army in the early 1930s when he met Liddell, who was then working for the London Missionary Society.

As Baker recounted it, Great Uncle Noel ? a fairly accomplished 400-meter runner ? was preparing for an Army race the following day when an "ungainly redheaded man joined him and asked in a broad Scottish accent if he might run alongside."

The two did a few laps together. "You're not bad," the redhead said. "Tomorrow I'll be first and you'll be second."

Great Uncle Noel was a bit put off by the remark. He realized the following day at race time that he had not only warmed up with Liddell but would be competing against him.

"Liddell smiled, and acknowledged my great uncle," Baker wrote. "The gun fired. The athletes set off. Eric Liddell finished first. Great Uncle Noel second."

Countries where people work least

Michaela Rehle / Reuters

People toast at the Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany, the nation where people work the least.

By Michael B. Sauter, Alexander E.M. Hess & Lisa A. Nelson, 24/7 Wall St.

As the global economic recovery grinds to a halt, many workers feel the increased pressure of holding on to their jobs and putting bread on their tables. Some may hold several jobs or simply put in more hours at work. Indeed, in 2011, for the second year in a row, the average hours worked per person increased in the United States. But this is not the case among all developed nations. In fact, while people in countries like the U.S. and Spain increased their hours worked, the average for developed nations fell slightly.

24/7 Wall St.: The 10 best countries for entrepreneurs

Earlier this month, the?Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)?released its 2012 Employment Outlook. The outlook paints a picture of the current labor markets in 32 member states, most of which are located in the Europe. In several countries, the average hours worked per year has fallen by more than 20. Based on the OECD report, 24/7 Wall St. identified the 10 countries where people work the least.

The average American worked 1,797 hours in 2011, or about 34.5 hours per week. In the countries on our list, the average hours worked was 1,611 or less, or the equivalent of 30 hours per week. In Austria, the average employed person worked just 1,330 hours, or a bit more than 25 hours per week.

Hours worked in some of these countries declined further over the past year. In Denmark, the average hours worked fell by 40 hours for each of the past two years. In Luxembourg, they fell by 51 hours between 2010 and 2011 alone.

The changes in hours worked on average can be affected, in part, by an actual increase or decrease in the amount of time full-time employees spend at work. However, a review of the data shows that part-time employment is also a major contributor to these changes. Of the 10 countries with the fewest average hours worked, nine were among the top 15 nations with the most part-time workers relative to the total working population, and four were in the top five. Netherlands has the highest proportion of part-time employees at 37.2 percent. That is more than double the OECD average. In the United States, only 12.6 percent of the total workforce work part-time.

The countries on this list are among the wealthiest in the OECD, which generally represents the more developed nations. Of the 10 countries with the fewest average hours worked, nine have the highest gross domestic product per capita. The exception is France, which has the eleventh-highest GDP.

Exemplifying the wealth of these nations, wages are also extremely high. The average U.S. worker earned a little more than $30 per hour in 2011. In these 10 countries, workers earned at least $31.27 per hour, and as much as $48.82 (in Denmark) per hour.

Mark Keese, head of OECD?s employment division, told 24/7 Wall St. that the wealth and productivity of a nation plays a large part in the structure of employment in the country. One component of this is the technological sophistication of industry. ?Generally, richer countries can and should see reductions in hours worked ... basically, you have stronger productivity performance and eventually you?re replacing workers with machines, which allow you to cut back on the number of hours of work.?

24/7 Wall St.: 10 countries where young people can't find a job

24/7 Wall St. reviewed the OECD?s 2012 Employment Outlook to identify the countries with the fewest hours worked in 2011. The 26 countries we reviewed were all members of the OECD. We excluded four because current data were not available. We also compared these countries via other metrics provided by the OECD, including GDP per capita, unemployment and a variety of other employment and quality-of-life data for 2011 or the most recent available year.

These are the 10 countries where people work the least:

1) Germany

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,330
  • ?Average working hours per week:?25.6
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$35.33 (7th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?6 percent

Every year since 2007, Germans had the fewest hours worked on average, with a low of 1,296 in 2009. One reason this number was so low is that in 2011 14.7 percent of all employees were temporary workers, while 22.1 percent only worked part-time, both above OECD averages. Those in permanent, full-time positions also had significant time for themselves, as only 5.14 percent of Germans work more than 50 hours a week, less than half the 10.86 percent of Americans who worked that much in 2011. The average German had 15.31 hours a day to devote to leisure, one of the highest figures among OECD countries. In 2009, the German government?introduced a program?that allowed companies to cut work weeks for employees, as opposed to firing them, in exchange for the government?s pledge to cover remaining wages.

2) Netherlands

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,336
  • ?Average working hours per week:?25.7
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$42.67 (4th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment:?4.4 percent

Workers in the Netherlands enjoy low levels of unemployment, high incomes and one of the smallest proportion of employees working 50 or more hours a week -- at only 0.7 percent. GDP per capita is also third highest among the countries we reviewed. In the OECD report, the Netherlands had the highest reported proportion of part-time workers in 2011 at 37.2 percent.

3) France

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,392
  • ?Average working hours per week:?26.8
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$34.26 (8th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?9.3 percent

The average annual hours worked for employees in France has decreased by nearly 100 hours since 1995. The French embrace their leisure hours, devoting an average of 15.33 hours to personal time, the fourth highest of the OECD countries reported. Some argue that?French productivity?is an issue, and compared to the average of 26 OECD countries reported, French workers spent about 17 percent less time at work in 2011. Yet, workers earned one of the highest average hourly salaries of the OECD nations, around $34.26 per hour.

24/7 Wall St: The 10 most educated ?countries in the world

4) Austria

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,431
  • ?Average working hours per week:?27.5
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$36.63 (6th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?4.2 percent

Last year, Austria had a 4.2 percent unemployment rate, nearly half the OECD?s unemployment rate of 8.2 percent. Despite this low unemployment figure, many workers could not find full-time jobs as 18.9 percent were part-time employees, more than the OECD?s average of 16.5 percent. Whereas some Austrians worked few hours, still others did exactly the opposite, as 9.02 percent of employees worked more than 50 hours a week. Austria has high average wages, at $36.63 per hour -- well above the $30.30 per hour in the United States. However, wages only increased an average of 0.3 percent per year between 2007 and 2011, below the OECD?s average of 0.5 percent, while the number of hours the average employee worked has fallen by 3.7 percent during that time.

5) Belgium

  • ?Average annual hours per person:?1,446
  • ?Average working hours per week:?27.8
  • ?Average wage per hour:?$38.90 (5th highest)
  • ?2011 unemployment rate:?7.2 percent

In 2011, Belgium?s annual unemployment rate fell to 7.2 percent from 8.4 percent in 2010. Not only does the country have an unemployment rate well below that of the U.S., which had an unemployment rate of 9.1 percent in 2011, but Belgians also work far less than Americans. Compared to 2008, when employees in Belgium worked 1,469 hours on average, by 2011 they worked 23 hours less. Meanwhile, from 2009 to 2011, the number of part-time workers rose from 18.2 percent to 18.8 percent of all employees. Many of those who took these new positions were women, who constituted 79.9 percent of all part-time employees in 2011. That was more than all but two other countries.
