Apple and Amazon update security following hack

30 min.

After hackers turned the life of Wired's?Mat Honan upside down, he did what any good reporter would do ??he investigated the incident and broke down just how things went wrong. As a result of Honan's research, we learned that Apple and Amazon each have some security holes.

Both companies are seemingly?working on setting things right. Amazon has plugged its hole and Apple has?temporarily?shut down a faulty process.

The trouble with Amazon was that folks who dialed up the online retailer's customer service line could gain control of a stranger's account as long as they knew that individual's name, email address and mailing address. This appears to no longer be the case, based on our own quick tests.

Apple's issue, that?someone could reset an Apple?ID (or iCloud ID) by phone with only minimal details about the account holder (a?name, email address, mailing address and the last four digits of the person's credit card number), is not a problem at this very moment. When?attempts are made?to have an Apple representative?reset a password over the phone, customers are being directed to Apple's password reset page.?

My own attempts to reset an iCloud ID?resulted in a rep telling me that "the?reset option is currently undergoing maintenance" and that "they just tell us we're not supposed to [reset passwords over the phone] right now."

We have reached out to both Amazon and Apple, to hear more about the changes they're making to their security procedures. Apple spokesperson?Natalie Kerris gave us a statement which basically sums up what we've?discover?so far:

We've temporarily suspended the ability to reset Apple?ID passwords over the phone. We're asking customers who need to reset their password to continue to use our online iForgot system (iforgot.apple.com). This system can reset a password in one of two ways ??either have a password reset sent to an alternate email address already on record or challenge the customer to answer security questions they had previously set up. When we resume over the phone password resets, customers will be required to provide even stronger identify verification to reset their password.

Brahimi to be new Syria envoy: diplomats

Lakhdar Brahimi, a veteran diplomat and former Algerian foreign minister, is expected to be named as the new UN-Arab League envoy to Syria in place of Kofi Annan, diplomats said Thursday.

Negotiations are still going on over the envoy's role and how the United Nations will operate in Syria amid the intensifying civil war. The mandate of the UN mission in the country ends on August 20.

An official announcement of the appointment of the 78-year-old Brahimi is expected to be made early next week, diplomats said, speaking on condition of anonymity as talks continue.

"We are certain it will be Brahimi," said one UN diplomat.

"He is the choice of the UN secretary general and his name will be announced next week as long as he does not pull out," added another.

Annan, a former UN secretary general, said he is leaving because of the lack of international support for his efforts to end the 17-month Syria conflict, in which rebels say more than 20,000 people have been killed.

He is to carry on working until August 31.

Brahimi was the UN envoy in Afghanistan after the September 11, 2001 attacks and in Iraq after the 2003 US-led invasion.

Brahimi was Algerian foreign minister from 1991 to 1993, and he helped end Lebanon's civil war in the late 1980s as an Arab League envoy.

With the failure of Annan's six-month campaign to get Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to carry out his six-point peace plan, there is now debate among key players over the role of the new envoy.

Annan and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon have made it clear that they believe divisions among the major powers on the UN Security Council undermined the Annan plan.

"I think there are different models for what an envoy might look like, what kind of background, what kind of role," US ambassador Susan Rice told reporters on Thursday without mentioning who Annan's replacement might be.

"We are open-minded about that. I think we have to be realistic that it is a very difficult job, and Kofi Annan did it admirably and found himself understandably frustrated at the end," Rice added.

A UN diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the Security Council now has to decide whether to stick with Annan's plan.

"For the moment it is all we have, but that does not mean that it cannot be reviewed. There are parts now that are redundant. There could be a new version with a new name," the diplomat said.

"All these elements are now being discussed," the diplomat added.

The badly divided Security Council powers are also discussing the future of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) -- the unarmed observers who were meant to monitor the implementation of Annan's peace plan.

A final decision is expected at a Security Council meeting next Thursday.

The original 300 military observers have been cut to less than 150 because of the worsening violence. They are still carrying out limited patrols but most of their work has now been suspended.

The Security Council gave it a "final" 30-day mandate in a resolution passed last month. Russia, Assad's key ally, says it wants UNSMIS to remain. Western nations say it is too dangerous to keep the observers there.

Russia and China have vetoed three UN resolutions proposed by the Western powers hinting at or threatening sanctions against Assad, fearing that they could lead to a Libyan-style foreign military intervention in Syria.

US ambassador Rice said the mission was unlikely to be extended in its current form.

"As we've said repeatedly, the conditions, particularly the extreme use of violence and heavy weapons by the government, do not permit the UNSMIS monitors -- or any monitors at this point who are unarmed -- to do the job they were sent to do," she said.

"They are hunkered down and have been for many, many weeks," she added.

"So that will not continue as far as we're concerned. We would certainly be willing to entertain other conceptions of a UN presence. There will be a country team.

"There will be a humanitarian presence. Perhaps there will be recommendations that will be more political in nature that we can consider favorably," Rice told reporters.

Democratic candidates pitch DREAM Act for platform

WASHINGTON (AP) ? In an appeal to Latino voters, three Senate candidates in the Southwest are calling on delegates to the Democratic National Convention to make support of a bill to help young illegal immigrants gain citizenship a part of the party platform.

Rep. Martin Heinrich, the Democratic nominee for a Senate seat from New Mexico, is leading the effort and said that formally supporting the immigration proposal would provide voters with a clear choice on an issue that many care deeply about.

"I think the time has come for the DREAM Act to be part of our identity as a party," Heinrich said in a telephone interview.

Democratic candidate Shelley Berkley in Nevada said she supports the campaign, and a spokesman for Richard Carmona in Arizona said he does as well.

The DREAM Act would give young illegal immigrants who attend college or serve in the military a path to citizenship.

The Homeland Security Department, under a directive from President Barack Obama, has stopped deporting illegal immigrants who would have qualified for the DREAM Act, but that policy does not provide a path to citizenship. The administration said the change in policy will affect as many as 800,000 immigrants.

The Democratic-led House approved the DREAM Act ? the acronym stands for Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors ? in December 2010, but Republicans blocked it in the Senate. While the bill has not been approved by either the House or the Senate since, Obama has supported it as part of his immigration reform efforts.

Democratic officials believe that the growing Hispanic population in key battleground states such as New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada gives those who embrace the DREAM Act a competitive edge in this fall's elections. A Pew Hispanic Center survey conducted in late 2011 found that more than 9 in 10 Hispanics support the DREAM Act.

It's unclear whether the Democratic Party's platform committee will add support of the bill to the platform.

"The platform process is ongoing, but the president and Democrats support the DREAM Act and are committed to taking steps toward passing it." said Melanie Roussell, spokeswoman for the DNC.

The campaign of Heinrich's Republican opponent, Heather Wilson, didn't respond directly to the question of whether she would support or oppose the DREAM Act if elected. In the past, she has said that she would not support amnesty for children brought to the U.S. at a young age by their parents but that "we owe it to them to find a long-term solution."

In Nevada, a spokesman for the campaign of Berkley's Republican opponent, Sen. Dean Heller, called the DREAM Act "a Band-Aid solution that will not solve the larger problem." Heller was among the Republican House members who voted against the bill in 2010.

Arizona Republicans have yet to choose their Senate nominee. The front-runner in the primary race, Rep. Jeff Flake, voted against the act in 2010 and says securing the border should take priority.

Morgan the good luck charm

Alex Morgan?s?late header at Old Trafford?staved off Olympic elimination and forces a rematch against Japan in the final.?Really, it?s just Alex being Alex.

It?ll never get boring, but Alex Morgan?s dramatic game-winning?goal against Canada has become a familiar sight. (Watch it again here.)

It?s far too early to ponder her potential legacy, but the 23-year-old has already built up a marvelous reputation. She rescued her team from an undesirable outcome (in this case, penalty kicks), just like she has time and time again. Her propensity for late heroics is what initially endeared her to the USWNT faithful.

Before the world knew her as ?Baby Horse?, she was known as something else: clutch.

In October 2010 against China, the U.S. came perilously close to losing its first domestic friendly since 2004. Who subbed in and scored the dramatic equalizer? Alex Morgan. A month later the team looked hopeless against Italy in a World Cup qualifying play-off. (That?s right; the U.S. nearly failed to qualify for the 2011 World Cup). Who netted the go-ahead goal in stoppage time? Yup. And let?s not even mention her two-goal output against New Zealand this February that secured a 2-1 comeback win or her late equalizer to draw level with Japan in a friendly this past April.

Saving face has become standard practice for the precocious starlet. We can flag up her towering header ? a rare header ? in the dying moments of the U.S.?s momentous semifinal victory over Canada as the latest example.

The context isn?t the only thing that makes today?s goal noteworthy. It marked the 20th time Morgan has found the back of the net in 2012. Morgan is just the fifth player in USWNT history to convert 20 goals in a calendar year. She also becomes the youngest. And it?s barely August.

Morgan?s grown accustomed to restoring hope in desperate situations, but her?timely interventions?haven?t always carried the day. Take the 2011 World Cup final for instance. It was easily the biggest stage she had yet to step foot on. Her flashy goal gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead with 21 minutes remaining in regular time. In what?s now become WoSo folklore, Japan would storm back with a second equalizer to force penalty kicks. For those unaware, the spot kicks didn?t turn out in the U.S.?s favor.

Last year?s summer classic will now have a sequel, courtesy of the U.S.?s no 13. Japan rarely relinquished control in their semifinal match?against France earlier today. The United States, on the back of yet another nerve-jangling comeback, will hope to foil Japan?s bid to become the first team to win the World Cup and Olympic gold in consecutive years.

It?s all teed up for another momentous Morgan moment. We?ve experienced plenty so far, but this will be on a whole new plane. The gold medal match against the defending world champions at Wembley Stadium? That would be the stuff of legend.

Where to go food shopping in Italy | My Melange

1 --> Food shopping in Roman Market

Shopping at a mercato {outdoor market}

One of the greatest pleasures in traveling to Italy is eating the food, so you certainly don?t want to miss out because you got lost in translation.

Whether you?re renting an apartment and need to shop for provisions, wanting to pack a nice picnic lunch or just a foodie desiring to sample everything Italy has to offer, here are some common places to shop, along with their translations, and tips for purchasing whatever your mouth desires.

Mercato ? This is the general term for a market. ?It usually applies to an outdoor market, which has set operating days. ?Some are open everyday, others once a week. ?Shop from morning to afternoon since they are not open in the evening.

Supermercato ? This Italian term translates to?can you guess??Supermarket. They carry a variety of food products, from breads and pasta to meat, cheese, and dairy.?A Supermercato in Italy is pretty similar to those in the United States, with a few important differences.

For hygienic reasons, you aren?t supposed to touch unpackaged food with your bare hands. Instead, you can use disposable gloves (usually found near produce bags). Also, it?s typically the shopper?s responsibility to weigh their produce on the provided electronic scales and attach the tags which print out, before getting to the checkout. And don?t expect anyone to bag for you. Not only is it customary to bag your groceries, but due to Italy?s outlaw of plastic bags in 2011, you might want to bring a reusable bag to avoid having to purchase one.

Alimentari ? These are smaller, usually more locally based grocery stores with a little less variety. Here you can satisfy your most basic food needs.

Pasticceria ? If you see a sign sporting this word, your sweet tooth should jump for joy. A Pasticceria is a pastry shop. They obviously carry pastries, but they can also carry cakes, sweet breads, coffee, candy and even gelato.

Panetteria or Panificio ? These translate more or less to bakery. They specialize in the sale of freshly baked bread (pani). A panificio usually bakes and sells the bread, while a panetteria sells bread, but may or may not actually make it there.

Italy has over 350 types of bread which can include sweet bread and pizza. Bread can be sold by weight, loaves or half loaves. ?Sometimes you can order Panini or a panino (a roll used for sandwiches?panini can refer to the roll itself or a finished sandwich).

Rosticceria, Salumeria, and Macelleria ? All three of these shops specialize in meat. The difference lies in what kind of meat they sell. A Rosticceria sells cooked or roasted meat. A?Salumeria?sells cured deli meats (think prosciutto, salami, mortadella). ?Though they sometimes carry deli meats, a?Macelleria?is typically more like a butcher shop. In Umbria, you?ll find a?Norcineria, stemming from the town of?Norcia, which is known for its cured meat.

You can purchase fresh red meat, poultry, pork and sausage. There?s quite a variety ?including things you wouldn?t normally find in the States like quail, pheasant, rabbit, donkey, and horse (a Macelleria Equina would only sell horse meat). These three typically don?t sell precut or prepackaged meat. You can ask for the type and weight you would like and it is cut or sliced fresh for you.

Pescheria ? A fishmonger or fish shop, where you can buy fresh seafood. If, however, you don?t want to see what your fish looked like before it was on your plate, a pescheria may not be the place for you; usually a pescheria doesn?t sell precut fish fillets, instead the fish will be displayed completely intact. Ask for fish by weight or piece and they will clean and cut the fish for you (usually leaving the head on).

Latteria ??A latteria sells dairy products, though they may not be the dairy products you?d find in an American grocery store. Though they can carry bottles of fresh milk in refrigerators, the milk can also be found unrefrigerated on shelves. This is because it?s processed at ultra-high temperatures and doesn?t require refrigeration before opening. Instead of finding milk in the refrigerated section you may find fresh pasta and a variety of cheeses.

Frutta e Verdura ? These shops sell mainly fresh fruits and veggies. Like the Supermercato, remember that most have a ?No Touch!? policy. When you greet the shop owner he or she may present you with a bag to fill or simply tell them what you want along with how many and they will fill a bag for you. If you?re using hand signals to communicate quantity, remember Italians count number one by holding up the thumb rather than the pointer finger. The rest of the numbers follow from there (for 2 hold up thumb and pointer; 3 is thumb, pointer and middle, etc.)

Gastronomia ? A Gastronomia is a place to purchase a range of freshly prepared or ready-to-heat foods like salad, pasta dishes, and sandwiches. They may also carry deli meat.

Hungry for more? ?Perhaps you?d be interested in a foodie adventure or food market tour in Italy.
Get in touch, I?d love to help!

Russian prosecutors ask for 3 years in punk case

MOSCOW (AP) ? Prosecutors on Tuesday called for three-year sentences for the members of a feminist punk band who performed an anti-Vladimir Putin stunt in Moscow's main cathedral, ignoring demands by human rights groups that the three women be set free.

Defense lawyers and an influential Russian Orthodox cleric warned that jail time for the women could backfire by severing trust between ordinary Russians and the country's institutions.

Prosecutor Alexander Nikiforov portrayed his request as lenient, saying the recommendation takes into account the fact that two of the defendants are young mothers and that they have good character references.

The hooliganism charges the three women of the Pussy Riot band face can carry a sentence of up to 7 years in prison.

The three women ? Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 23; Maria Alekhina, 24; and Yekaterina Samutsevich, 29 ? have been in custody for five months following the February stunt, in which they took over a church pulpit in Christ the Savior cathedral for less than a minute, singing, high-kicking and dancing.

Their case is part of a widening government crackdown on dissent that followed Putin's election in March and caused strong protests in Russia and abroad. Musicians including Madonna, the Who's Pete Townshend and Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys have urged their release.

The verdict is expected this week.

The defendants have said their goal was to express their resentment over Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Kirill's support for Putin's rule. But prosecutors have insisted throughout the trial that there were no political motives behind the performance.

"They set themselves off against the Orthodox world and sought to devalue traditions and dogmas that have been formed for the centuries," Nikiforov said Tuesday.

Members of the band say they did not mean to hurt anyone's religious feelings when they performed the "punk prayer."

Larisa Pavlova, a lawyer for the church employees who were described as the injured party in the case told the court on Tuesday that she supports the sentencing recommendation.

Pavlova said most hooliganism in Russia is committed when people are drunk and they often regret what they have done ? but the defendants "thoroughly planned, rehearsed (their performance) and were fully aware of what they were doing."

"And they had the audacity to say in court that they did the right thing, that it's OK and that they're ready to keep on doing such things," Pavlova said.

Tolokonnikova chuckled as Pavlova mentioned in her speech that feminism in Russia is incompatible with Orthodox faith.

Pussy Riot lawyer Violetta Volkova voiced the band's complaint that the women had been deprived of sleep and food throughout the trial, describing it as "torture."

"In this trial, authorities, not the girls, have dealt a crushing blow on the Russian Orthodox Church," Volkova said. "Time has turned back ? back to the Middle Ages."

The trial has sharply divided Russia. Some believers felt insulted by the act, while others believe they are innocents who are being treated unfairly.

Mark Feygin, a lawyer for the band, argued that a guilty verdict would "break a bond between the government and people for good" and that "society will never forgive the state for persecuting the innocent."

Orthodox leaders have ignored calls by many believers to pardon the women and urge the court to dismiss the case.

Archdeacon Andrei Kurayev, an influential Orthodox blogger and Professor of the Moscow Theological Academy, warned in an interview with the RIA Novosti news agency on Tuesday that jail time for the three would "turn them into martyrs" and would only feed hostility toward the Church.

Meanwhile, Russian Internet users were fuming over a video of Putin visiting a northern Russian monastery on Monday where a priest kneeled down to kiss his hand.

Though Putin was visibly annoyed by the display of deference, many Russians felt the incident accurately portrayed a too-cozy relationship between the leader and the Orthodox church.

The church said that the priest was from Macedonia, where it's not unusual for men of the cloth to kiss the hands of laymen as a sign of humility.

Sources of Support Available for Breastfeeding Mothers

There are many sources of support available for breastfeeding mothers. You can seek help from different types of health professionals, organizations, and members of your own family. Under the?Affordable Care Act?(sometimes called ?health care reform?), more and more women will have access to breastfeeding support without any out-of-pocket costs. And don?t forget, friends who have successfully breastfed can be a great source of information and encouragement! You can also learn more in the following sections:

Health professionals who help with breastfeeding

Pediatricians, obstetricians, and certified nursemidwives can help you with breastfeeding. Other special breastfeeding professionals include:
