Bride attacked by pit bull mix at wedding party

DENVER ?

A bride is recovering from injuries after she was attacked by a pit bull mix and its owner at her wedding reception.

Brittany Cortez says the alleged attacker, Joel Nevarez, is a troubled childhood friend who was invited to her reception at a Denver home. She told KMGH-TV ( http://goo.gl/ood37) that he let the dog drag her around "like a rag doll" and punched her in the face and head with brass knuckles at the party early Sunday.

Cortez thinks the attack was motivated by jealousy.

Nevarez is wanted for suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon. Police think he may have fled to Mexico, where his mother lives.

The dog has been seized and is being held on a 10-day quarantine at the city's animal shelter.

Ecuador allies warn Britain of 'grave consequences'

Ecuador has received powerful backing from regional allies as they warned Britain of "grave consequences" if it breaches diplomatic security at Ecuador's embassy in London, where WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is holed up.

The warning capped two days of a tense diplomatic standoff between Britain and the South American nation, which on Thursday granted asylum to Assange, whose website enraged the United States by publishing a vast cache of confidential government files.

Britain has responded by vowing not to grant him safe passage out of the country.

But Ecuador called on its allies from the Venezuela-led so-called Bolivarian Alliance for the People of Our America (ALBA), whose foreign ministers flew to the Ecuadoran economic capital and displayed late Saturday full diplomatic support.

"We warn the government of the United Kingdom that it will face grave consequences around the world if it directly breaches the territorial integrity of the Embassy of the Republic of Ecuador in London," said a statement issued at the end of the ALBA meeting.

The statement, read by Ecuadoran Foreign Minister Nicolas Maduro, also rejected Britain's "threats vis-a-vis our territorial integrity and sovereignty."

The regional group, which also includes Bolivia, Cuba, Nicaragua as well as a number of smaller Caribbean nations, expressed its "categorical support for Ecuador's sovereign right" to grant asylum to Assange and urged other world nations to reject what it called "Britain's attempts to impose its will by force."

ALBA nations also called on the United Nations to discuss the issue of inviolability of diplomatic installations around the world.

Britain has angered Ecuador by suggesting it could invoke the Diplomatic and Consular Premises Act of 1987, which it says allows it to revoke the diplomatic immunity of an embassy on British soil and go in to arrest Assange.

Assange, whose website caused a stir in the diplomatic world when it published a trove of diplomatic cables and military logs from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, took refuge in the embassy on June 19 to evade extradition to Sweden, where he is wanted for questioning over alleged sexual misconduct.

Assange, 41, is set to face the world's media on Sunday from the safe haven of London's Ecuadoran embassy but risks arrest if he takes even one step out of the building.

With police officers primed to detain him, Assange must find a way of speaking publicly without setting foot outside, raising the possibility of him being forced to speak from a balcony or lean out of a window.

WikiLeaks was tight-lipped about the logistics of Assange's planned appearance at 1300 GMT, with spokesman Kristinn Hrafnsson telling AFP what little he knew could not be discussed for "security reasons."

But Britain's Foreign Office warned that the steps to the embassy were considered British territory while police said officers would take "appropriate" action" if he strayed from the building.

Earlier Saturday, Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa went on the offensive as he slammed what he called Britain's "vulgar threats" to remove Assange from Ecuador's London embassy.

"Never, as long as I am president, will Ecuador accept threats like these, which are absolutely vulgar, inconsiderate and intolerable," Correa said in a weekly statement.

"We will not give up our sovereignty. We respect everyone, and we are always seeking dialogue, but the final decision is ours."

The Organization of American States meanwhile has called a meeting of foreign ministers for August 24 to discuss the situation around Assange.

NEW YORK - Jon Lester shut down the Yankees' offense for seven innings, Adrian Gonzalez provided an early lead with a two-run homer and the Boston Red Sox beat New York 4-1 Saturday for a badly needed win.

Yankees nemesis Pedro Ciriaco was 4 for 4, raising his average against New York this year to .517 (15 for 29), and Boston reliever Craig Breslow and catcher Ryan Lavarnway became what is thought to be the first all-Yale battery in the major leagues since 1883.

The fourth-place Red Sox won for just the fourth time in 11 games as they try to right their foundering season.

Lester (7-10) won consecutive starts for the first time since mid-May, allowing five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Curtis Granderson homered in the fourth for the Yankees' only run, then doubled leading off the seventh only to be stranded on third.

Before defeating Cleveland 14-1 last Sunday, Lester had gone 0-5 with a 7.49 ERA in seven starts from the start of July. He had trouble locating at first and needed 24 pitches to get through his opening inning, when Derek Jeter's walk and Nick Swisher's single gave the Yankees two on with no outs. He struck out Robinson Cano, retired Andruw Jones on a slow bouncer to third and fanned Casey McGehee.

After Andrew Bailey started the eighth and gave up a one-out single to Swisher, Breslow induced an inning-ending, double-play grounder from Cano, who is in a 1-for-21 skid.

Ryan Lavarnway was behind the plate, and according to STATS LLC and baseballreference.com, the only previous all-Yale battery was in 1883 when the Philadelphia Athletics' Jack Jones pitched to Al Hubbard. The Red Sox said they had been talking with Yale in recent days and had not yet been able to confirm that.

Alfredo Aceves pitched the ninth for his 25th save in 31 chances.

David Phelps (3-4), making his second spot start while CC Sabathia is on the disabled list, gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 2-3 innings, struck out seven and walked none. He fanned Cody Ross three times, all on breaking balls.

Swisher had three hits and is hitting .348 (16 for 46) since he was moved into the No. 2 slot in the batting order.

Boston moved ahead right away. Carl Crawford singled with one out in the first and stole second, and with two outs Gonzalez homered into the left-field seats.

Granderson's 32nd homer - his 11th off a left-hander - cut the deficit in the fourth.

Boston came right back in the fifth when Ciriaco singled with one out and scored on Nick Punto's double into the right-field corner.

Punto helped Lester avoid trouble in the fifth. Ichiro Suzuki singled with one out and stole second, and Jeter hit a hard one-hopper to third. The ball bounced off Punto's glove into the air, and he grabbed the ball with his bare hand and threw to first for the out. Swisher then struck out on a check swing.

Ciriaco doubled in the ninth, sending Scott Podsednik to third, and Cody Eppley threw a run-scoring wild pitch.

Notes: Red Sox LHP Brian Johnson, a first-round draft pick in June, was hit on the face with a line drive in a Future Games at Boston's Fenway Park. Johnson sustained multiple orbital bone fractures on the left side of his face, Red Sox spokeswoman Pam Ganley said. He was taken to a hospital, where she said he was resting comfortably. There were no signs of a concussion. ... The AL East will meet the NL West in interleague play next year, according to the draft schedule MLB sent to teams. The Yankees are to play San Francisco and Arizona at home and to travel to Los Angeles, San Diego and Colorado. ... Dustin Pedroia doubled in the eighth, extending his hitting streak to 13 games. ... INF Mauro Gomez was recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and LHP Felix Doubront was placed on the 15-day DL with a bruised right knee. The Doubront move was retroactive to Aug. 10, and the Red Sox expect he will rejoin the rotation as soon as he's eligible to come off the DL.

'Expendables 2' Cast Revved Up By 'Huge' Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford Rumors

It's hard enough trying to temper our excitement for the release of this week's surefire box-office champ, "Expendables 2," but the Internet rumor mill is already churning out talk of a potential third film in the franchise ... and several very high-profile action stars that might be in talks to appear in an "Expendables 3."

When MTV News caught up with the cast of "Expendables 2" recently, we asked them about those rumors and whether they'd be game to do another installment.

"Maybe today [I'd be game] ? when I was shooting, it would have been a different answer," director Simon West joked. "When you're doing it you think, 'How could this get any bigger or more outlandish?' And then you start thinking about who else you could put in it and how you could take spins on it; you could do the female version, 'Expendabelles,' " he added. "There are a lot of spinoff and sequel versions possible with this."

But action superstar and scene-stealer Chuck Norris wasn't sold on the idea of a threequel just yet.

"I'd have to think about it," Norris said. "I enjoyed doing this one but I'd have to think about doing another one."

On the other hand, co-stars Jason Statham and Terry Crews are ready to sign up again. "I think they should all turn up," Statham said of lining up Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford and Nicolas Cage. "I'm a massive Clint Eastwood fan and have been forever; he's in the realm of Arnold and Sly for me. I'd be fine doing a third [movie]," he added with a smile. "I've got a few left in me I think."

"I'm loving Nic Cage, I'm definitely loving Clint and Harrison," Crews said. "What can you say? You'd think this movie couldn't get any bigger, but with the addition of those [rumored] names, damn, it got bigger! This thing [could be] huge."

In addition to thinking outside the box with his "Expendabelles" idea, West agreed that adding more action-movie legends to the already-packed roster would take things to another level.

"On days when I had all those guys together, you're thinking, 'This is incredible, this will never happen again,' and then you start thinking if we do do it again, if we had Clint Eastwood and Harrison Ford and Sean Connery and Nic Cage and all those guys, oh my God, it really would be another stage up."

Check out everything we've got on "The Expendables 2."

Get Fresh Air Inside Your Car In Sidney

Air quality affects us wherever we are in Sidney. Many decades ago, Sidney residents began to become aware of how air pollution negatively affects health. But what about the air inside your vehicle?

Cabin air filters are now coming on most new SUVs since the 2000 model year. These filters clean the air in the passenger compartment. They can filter particles down to three microns, so that?s good enough to clean out dust, pollen and most pollutants. If you suffer from allergies in Sidney, this is very good news.

You can look in your SUV owner?s manual to see if you have a cabin air filter. If you do, there?ll be a recommendation for replacing it when it gets dirty. If you live where there?s a lot of dust, pollen or pollution, you may need to change it more often. You can also ask your personable service advisor at Sauder?s Automotive in Sidney.

How hard it is to change a cabin air filter depends on your vehicle. Some are quite accessible; others take some doing to get to them. They?re usually in the SUV engine compartment or under the dashboard.

Because cabin air filters are so new on the scene, some Sidney motorists haven?t heard of them ? even people who have cabin air filters. Sauder?s Automotive service advisors report customers complaining of an unpleasant odor in their vehicle and it turned out to be a dirty cabin air filter.

An important note for Sidney hybrid owners: there is a special air filter that cleans the air that cools the hybrid battery pack. This filter should be inspected every time the cabin air filter is inspected and replaced if it is dirty so that the battery pack doesn?t overheat.

Governments mull seizing mortgages

Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

A house for sale is pictured in Fontana, San Bernardino County, California, in this 2009 file photograph. A mortgage firm backed by a number of prominent West Coast financiers is pushing local politicians in California and a handful of other states hardest hit by the housing crisis to use eminent domain to restructure mortgages for borrowers who owe more money than their homes are worth.

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

With millions of homeowners still underwater, some local governments are considering a novel solution: condemning their mortgages through the power of eminent domain.

?Federal programs have not been very successful at all, and the private programs have been of limited help,? said Gregory Devereaux, administrator for San Bernardino County, explaining the government's decision to consider eminent domain, a plan the mortgage industry considers the equivalent of the nuclear option. The hard-hit county's board of supervisors is expected to meet Thursday to consider proposals to help homeowners, including the possible use of eminent domain.

There are several ways a local government could use eminent domain to write down mortgages, but the basic idea is fairly simple. Much like the condemnation of a piece of land for public use, the town or county would seek court approval to pay a ?fair market? value to a lender or investor holding a homeowner?s underwater mortgage. That amount would be substantially less than the unpaid balance. Once the seizure is approved, the local government would then offer to sell the smaller mortgage back to the homeowner, who would refinance the outstanding balance with a new loan.

Not surprisingly the idea has struck a deep nerve in the mortgage finance industry.

?It?s absolutely a reflection of frustration, but that doesn?t mean it?s right and it doesn?t mean it?s responsible,? said David Stevens, president of the Mortgage Bankers Association. ?In cities or counties where they pass ordinances to do this they?re going to make credit availability extremely limited. And that?s just going to hurt recovery of those communities much greater than families that would be helped.?

The idea has also drawn the ire of the Federal Housing Finance Authority, the regulator of government mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which last week threatened unspecified action to stop local governments from seizing underwater homes through eminent domain. Together, those government enterprises hold or guarantee roughly half of all mortgages outstanding.

Despite pressure from the White House and more than 100 members of Congress, FHFA acting Director Edward DeMarco recently repeated his opposition to the idea of writing down the balances of some mortgages held in the government?s portfolio. That policy only further demonstrates the need to attack the problem on a local level, say proponents of the eminent domain idea.

?It almost doesn?t matter what the federal government comes up with -- if they?re not going to allow it, they?re not going to allow it,? said Robert Hockett, a Cornell University law professor who has written in support of the plan. ?We?d love to see an FHFA with a different attitude toward principal write-downs. We?d love to see a different head of FHFA if that?s what it takes.?

San Bernardino, a sprawling county east of Los Angeles, twice the size of Massachusetts, has been hit hard by the housing bust. The county unemployment rate stood at 12.6 percent June, one of the highest in the nation. Median home prices have fallen to $150,000 from a peak of $370,000.?The foreclosure rate is among the highest in the country.?With its tax base badly eroded, the city of San Bernardino recently filed for municipal bankruptcy?after disclosing a $46 million budget shortfall.?

?Our issue is not the individual homeowner,? said Devereaux, the county administrator. ?Our issue is our economy. And what is the moral rightness of keeping these people underwater and keeping our unemployment rate high because we can?t get the housing market going again??

The idea is being discussed in other municipalities, although it has not gotten far. In Chicago, Mayor Rahm Emanuel this week shot down the idea, saying eminent domain is the wrong tool to address housing problems, which he described as a national issue.

The well-established power of eminent domain has traditionally been applied more narrowly to claim property for new roads or facilities that at least arguably benefit the entire community. Critics say seizing individual properties would benefit only the homeowners who gets a break on their loan balance.

But proponents counter that local mortgage seizures would serve the public good because they would help boost local housing markets and speed economic recovery.

?They?re using their power for the public good to improve the quality of life and services for their residents," said Steven Gluckstern, a principal in Mortgage Resolution Partners, a newly formed private company that is promoting the eminent domain plan. ?It?s a taking. It?s a tough word. It's a local community saying, ?I can?t stand by and watch the continued degradation of my community so I?m just going to take the loan.?"

The San Francisco-based company?is in talks with about a half-dozen local governments about setting up mortgage condemnation programs, Gluckstern said. The company would manage the program and help homeowners refinance their mortgages in exchange for a $4,500 fee for each modified loan.

It is not clear whether efforts to use eminent domain in this way would pass legal muster. Each case would have to be approved by a judge, as is true in every eminent domain case.

"In eminent domain, (the local government) sues the investors: that?s how it starts," Gluckstern said. ?They have only two claims: one is that you don?t have right to do this and the other is that you?re not paying me fair value. Those two issues are part of any eminent domain case."

The FHFA has concerns about the use of eminent domain to revise existing financial contracts. With Steven Gluckstern, Mortgage Resolution Partners, and Tom Deutsch, American Securitization Forum.

It also?remains to be seen who would be the winners and losers if these plans move forward. Underwater homeowners certainly come out ahead. Depending on how the loans are valued, investors holding these mortgages could also benefit in the long run.

Proponents of mortgage write-downs argue that underwater homeowners are at much greater risk of default, which leaves lenders and investors with potentially big losses. That?s why banks holding underwater loans commonly decide to cut the outstanding balance to keep the loan performing and avoid the losses that stem from a foreclosure.?

But many underwater mortgages written during the 2000s lending boom were pooled into trusts and sold off to investors. The complex contracts governing those trusts have severely limited investors? ability to modify a loan -? even when it?s in their best interest.

?These contracts are effectively functioning as suicide pacts among bondholders,? said Hockett, the Cornell professor. ?They?re preventing something from happening that would be good for the bondholders themselves."

By looking at the default rates of underwater borrowers, banks holding loans outright have come up with formulas to decide how far they can write down a mortgage and still come out ahead in the long run. In theory, the same should hold for mortgages held in trusts, according to Laurie Goodman, an analyst at Amherst Securities who recently analyzed the potential impact of eminent domain mortgage write-downs.

?Taking select loans out of a trust could conceivably result in a higher realized value for (the) investors,? she wrote. ?Using eminent domain is a novel (albeit aggressive) idea to reach this goal.?

But the same trust contracts that have impeded investors from writing down loans also leave them with little protection from a local government that offers less than fair value when it seizes mortgages, she wrote.

Opponents of the eminent domain idea -- and of write-downs in general -- inevitably raise the issue of ?moral hazard.? Cutting the loan balance of a troubled homeowner will only encourage future borrowers to take on debts they can?t pay back, according to this argument.

Both public and private efforts at loan modification have been bogged down from the start by the difficulty in identifying which homeowners should be helped and which should be left to fend for themselves.

?It?s easy as an outsider to say the (Obama) administration that should have done more,? said Stevens, a former FHA official. ?But how do you implement a program and not sweep in irresponsible behaviors with responsible ones??

Should governments use eminent domain if needed to resolve housing problems?
