Ben Affleck Puts Down Jennifer Garner and Motherhood

I always kind of believed that Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck have an ideal modern marriage. They both still work and you see them out together with all three of their little ones. It has looked like a pretty good balance. Ben works more and Jen undoubtedly gave up a fabulous career to focus on making motherhood her first priority. But then, that?s what women do. I liked the idea of Ben being in the parenting trenches with her more often than we realize, until I stumbled onto a snippet from a new interview with Ben. He dishes to Details magazine via Celeb Baby Laundry about the perils of fatherhood in general saying,

?I don?t want to be a stay-at-home dad. Work is very important to me. I like to work. But I need my work to mean something to me in order for me to not be home with them. Anytime you think, ?I?m wasting my time here,? the first thought you have is, ?I could go home and be with my kids,?? he says. ?Now, you may go home and be with your kids and very quickly start thinking, ?I wonder what?s on the work front?? I am not very present in the rest of my life. My wife?s very patient. She does everything,? he shares. ?If I have time, I try to spend time with the kids, even if just to be a physical presence, the bath, whatever.?

Just wow. So many fathers would give body parts for the opportunity to pick and choose their work, in order to spend more time with their kids. Ben really sounds like it is a chore and when he is home he admits to not being very present! Why keep expanding the family if it?s so tedious to actually simply BE with them?

We see lots of family photos of them all out together which makes me wonder, does Ben step out with Jen and the kids because it?s a photo opportunity that will endear him to the fans? Does he do it just to feed the happy family image that he has worked so hard to ensure?? I mean, if it?s hard to be at home with your little ones then taking them out in public is usually worse!

Are Ben and Jen the real deal or did she give up an awful lot just to prop up her husband?s career?? Tell us your thoughts below!

Chinese media says vice president appears in public

BEIJING (Reuters) - China's leader-in-waiting Xi Jinping appeared in public on Saturday for the first time in about two weeks, visiting a Beijing university in what appeared to be an effort to dispel rumors of serious illness and a troubled succession.

In a brief English-language report, the Xinhua news agency said Vice President Xi "arrived at China Agricultural University Saturday morning for activities marking this year's National Science Popularisation Day".

A single picture on the government's website (www.gov.cn) showed Xi, with a slight smile and wearing a black informal jacket over a white shirt, walking around the university.

Reuters had reported that Xi was likely to make an appearance on Saturday.

Sources have told Reuters that Xi hurt his back while swimming earlier this month and that he had been obeying doctors' orders to get bed rest and undergo physiotherapy.

A Reuters reporter at the university saw a man with sleek black hair wearing a white shirt -- who from a distance looked like Xi -- getting loud applause as he stepped out of the building housing an exhibition and raised his arms up and down twice in a gesture of vigour.

There was a light security presence around the university, but a building housing a science exhibition was closed off by police and plain clothes guards.

Hundreds of students applauded, some shouting "Vice President Xi" or even "President Xi".

A roar went up when his car rushed by and Xi waved his hand out the window.

"It was him for sure," said one student, who had taken a blurry shot of the car on his smart phone. "He must be better." The student refused to give his name.

The news spread rapidly on China's popular Twitter-like microblogging site Sina Weibo, with users referring to Xi as the "crown prince" to avoid the usual censorship associated with the names of top leaders.

"He looks well," wrote one user.

"In the future he should take better care when he goes swimming," added another.

Xi had been out of the public eye for almost two weeks and had skipped meetings with foreign leaders and dignitaries, including U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Chinese government officials repeatedly refused to say what had happened to him, fuelling speculation that has included Xi supposedly suffering a heart attack, a stroke, emergency cancer surgery and even an attempted assassination.

The health of the country's leaders has long been considered a state secret in China.

The ruling Communist Party's refusal to comment on his disappearance from public view and absence from scheduled events was in keeping with its traditional silence on the question of the health of top leaders, but it had worried or mystified most China watchers.

Xi had last appeared in public on September 1. He pulled a back muscle while swimming shortly before Clinton arrived on an official visit on September 4, the sources had said, forcing him to scrap a meeting with her the next day and also with Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Beijing has yet to announce formally a date for the party's five-yearly congress, at which Xi is tipped to replace Hu Jintao as party chief, although it is still expected to be held in mid or late October at the earliest.

In March next year, he is formally to take over the reins of the world's second-largest economy.

The uncertainty surrounding Xi's absence has had no impact so far on Chinese or foreign markets, which have been absorbed by Europe's debt crisis and China's own economic slowdown. But investors have been keeping a close eye on the mystery surrounding Xi, after months of political drama in China.

Senior leader Bo Xilai was suspended from the party's 25-member Politburo in April and his wife convicted of the murder of a British businessman. Blind human rights activist Chen Guangcheng escaped from house arrest in April and took refuge in the U.S. embassy before leaving for New York.

In another scandal this month, a senior ally of President Hu was demoted after sources said the ally's son was killed in a crash involving a luxury sports car.

Fed unveils bold, open-ended steps to aid economy

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Alarmed by the chronically weak U.S. economy, the Federal Reserve launched an aggressive new effort Thursday to boost the stock market and make borrowing cheaper for years to come.

And it made clear it won't stop there and is ready to try other stimulative measures if hiring doesn't pick up.

Stock prices rocketed up in approval. But economists said the Fed's plans to buy mortgage bonds for as long as it deems necessary and to keep interest rates at record lows until mid-2015 ? six months longer than previously planned ? might provide little benefit to the economy.

Chairman Ben Bernanke himself cautioned that the Fed's actions are no panacea for slow growth and high unemployment, and said the economy will probably need help even after the recovery strengthens.

"The idea is to quicken the recovery," Bernanke said at a news conference after the Fed lowered its outlook for growth this year.

As part of its bold and open-ended plan, the Fed said it would spend $40 billion a month to buy mortgage bonds to make home buying more affordable. That will be the third round of bond-buying in an effort to spur the economy, and the Fed left open the possibility of taking other steps to encourage borrowing and financial risk-taking.

Stock prices rose steadily after the Fed's announcement at 12:30 p.m. Eastern time. The Dow Jones industrial average closed up more than 200 points, coming within 625 points ? or 4.6 percent ? of its all-time high. Other stock averages also surged.

Benchmarks in Asia also rallied on the news. Japan's Nikkei 225 index gained 1.5 percent in early trading. Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index climbed 2.5 percent to its highest level since early May.

The Fed's policy committee announced the actions after its two-day meeting. The moves pointed to how sluggish the U.S. and global economies remain more than three years after the Great Recession ended.

Thursday's announcement marked the Fed's latest dramatic intervention since the financial crisis erupted in 2008 and the recession sent unemployment into double digits. The Fed cut its benchmark short-term rate to near zero and has kept it there for nearly four years. And it's bought more than $2 trillion in Treasurys and mortgage bonds to try to drive down long-term rates.

Yet for all that, the U.S. economy is still struggling. The unemployment rate is 8.1 percent. And the Fed estimated Thursday that the rate will fall no lower than 7.6 percent in 2013.

The Fed's latest actions came a week after the European Central Bank announced its most ambitious plan yet to ease Europe's financial crisis by buying unlimited amounts of government bonds to help countries manage their debts.

With less than eight weeks until Election Day, the economy remains the top issue on most voters' minds. Many Republicans have been critical of the Fed's continued efforts to drive interest rates lower, saying they fear it could ignite inflation.

Asked at his news conference whether the Fed considered the impact of its actions on the presidential election, Bernanke said: "We make our decisions based entirely on the state of the economy. ... We just don't take those factors into account."

The Fed also lowered its outlook for economic growth this year, though it was more optimistic about the next two years. It said it expects growth to be no stronger than 2 percent this year, down from its forecast of 2.4 percent in June.

It said it expected the unemployment rate to be no lower than 6.7 percent in 2014, with inflation remaining at or below 2 percent for three more years.

Bernanke made clear that higher stock prices are among the Fed's goals in buying bonds. Stock gains increase Americans' wealth, he noted, and typically lead individuals and businesses to spend and invest more.

But some economists said they thought the benefit to the economy would be slight.

"We doubt it will be enough to get the economy on the right track," said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics. "It's only a matter of time before speculation begins as to when the Fed will raise its purchases from $40 billion a month."

The Fed's ability to increase home buying might be limited even if its bond purchases help lower mortgage rates. The average rate on a 30-year fixed mortgage is 3.55 percent. That's barely above the record low of 3.49 percent set in July.

While the U.S. housing market has improved, it has a long way to go to reach a full recovery. Some economists forecast that sales of previously occupied homes will reach about 4.6 million this year. That's well below the 5.5 million annual sales pace considered healthy.

Bernanke sought to lower expectations about how much the Fed's intervention might help the economy.

"We're just trying to get the economy moving in the right direction, to make sure that we don't stagnate at high levels of unemployment," he said. "All that being said, monetary policy, as I've said many times, is not a panacea."

The Fed's statement was approved 11-1. The lone dissenter was Richmond Fed President Jeffrey Lacker, who worried about igniting inflation.

The Fed's new bond purchases, which will start Friday, amount to less per month than either of its first two bond programs. But by committing to buying bonds indefinitely, the Fed is seeking to assure investors and consumers that borrowing will remain cheap far into the future.

"In many ways, today's actions represent the beginning of a new phase in Bernanke's efforts to get the economy moving again," said Michael Feroli, an economist at JPMorgan Chase Bank.

Some economists suggested that the Fed might continue to buy $40 billion a month in mortgage bonds for up to three years. That's how long some expect it will take for the unemployment rate to dip below 7 percent, toward a "normal" rate of 6 percent or less.

If the new bond buying lasts three years, Ashworth said it would add about $1.4 trillion to the Fed's purchases. That would be close to the $1.7 trillion the Fed spent in its first round of bond buying, which began in November 2008 and ran until March 2010.

The Fed's second bond-buying program totaled $600 billion. It ran from November 2010 through June 2011.

Still, skeptics caution that further bond buying might provide little economic benefit because rates are already near record lows. Critics also warn that more bond purchases raise the risk of higher inflation later.

A spokeswoman for Mitt Romney's Republican presidential campaign said the Fed's latest efforts to boost the economy are "further confirmation that President Obama's policies have not worked."

The Fed is under pressure to act because the U.S. economy is still growing too slowly to reduce high unemployment. The unemployment rate has topped 8 percent every month since the recession officially ended more than three years ago.

In August, job growth slowed sharply. Employers added just 96,000 jobs, down from 141,000 in July and well below what is needed to bring relief to the more than 12 million who are unemployed.

The unemployment rate did fall to 8.1 percent from 8.3 percent. But that was because many Americans stopped looking for work, so they were no longer counted as unemployed.

Bernanke spotlighted the problem of chronic high unemployment in a speech to an economic conference in Jackson Hole, Wyo., late last month. He argued that bond purchases and other unorthodox Fed actions had helped ease borrowing costs and boost stock prices.

Get to Know a Wedding Photographer: McFadden Studios

Today we have an interview with Chelsi and Cameron of McFadden Studios! Based in Mendocino, CA (near where I grew up!), I love their quirky style. Check it out:

Tell us a bit about yourself and your company

Hi, we are Chelsi and Cameron. Not only are we husband and wife, but we also own and operate McFadden Studios. We have three beautiful boys who of course are our favorite models.

We are by no means a company. We are just two people who adore LOVE. We want to give our clients something to cherish for a lifetime. We are here to take care of the moments.

See more of the interview and their beautiful photography after the cut!

How did you get into wedding photography?

In spring of 2010, Chelsi created a facebook page to store her personal photography. She hadn?t really considered a career in photography as she is a part-time dental assistant. A young lady saw her work and asked if she would be willing to shoot her wedding. Since then, she has captured many weddings, couples, families, and children. It?s been a privilege and an honor to be part of so many people?s lives.

What is your favorite part of the wedding day to capture?

This is a two part answer. Cameron?s favorite part of the day to capture is the general surroundings. He loves nature and small details that not many people would think to capture. He also loves taking candid shots.

Chelsi on the other hand LOVES capturing her bride and groom. The moments that they share prior to or even just after their ceremony are so fleeting and wonderful. Capturing love is her main goal and it?s not hard to accomplish.

What is the most awkward moment you?ve experienced while on the job?

We have both had the experience of either a friend or family member honing in on the photography for our bride and groom?s big day. While we appreciate that everyone wants to capture their own memories it is very difficult to shoot around people who just seem to want to be in the way of every shot. We have had to ask a friend or family member on occasion to step aside, and that is always awkward.

What?s the best thing you ever ate at a wedding?

Cake. We don?t think that there is anything better than wedding cake. We aren?t picky. We love it all.

What is your favorite venue and why?

Our favorite venue that we have actually shot at is The Boonville Hotel in Philo, California. We love vintage locations with classic charm. We are dying to shoot at Spring Ranch in Littler River, CA.

Nikon or Canon?

Nikon all the way. Cameron started out with Nikon N80s many years ago and because of that was drawn to the Nikon DSLRs. Nikon lenses and bodies are the only way to go for us, however we don?t think that Nikon is superior to Canon or visa versa. It?s just us.

What is your dream location to shoot a wedding?

I think our dream location would have to be either Paris, France or somewhere on the coast of Ireland. Chelsi is simply in love with France and Cameron?s heritage is irish. It just goes to reason that Ireleand would be the place to be.

If you could shoot any celebrity wedding (past, present or future), who would be the lucky couple?

You?re all going to think this is a funny answer, but here it goes. We shoot celebrities all the time. Not in the big screen, fame and fortune sense. No. Each one of our clients is a celebrity because each and every person is unique. Every wedding is amazing and fantastic. These photographers are not star struck. Of course if Brad Pitt were to ask for our wedding pricing, we would not complain. However, all of our clients are superstars to us.

What?s the biggest lesson you?ve learned, and would pass along to other new wedding photographers just getting started?

Practice. Practice. Practice. Never stop shooting. The more you shoot, the better you become.

Never undercut the competition. f you want to shoot for fun and practice ask a friend or family memeber to go out, but don?t offer your services for free. Your skill is worth something and eventually when you feel like it?s time to ?go pro? your clients will not appreciate a sudden charge for your services.

Respect the people in the biz who have been there a while. Until you have walked a mile in their shoes, you have no idea what it has been like for them and how hard they have worked to get where they are.

Be true to yourself! Find what you love about photography and do it. Don?t be an all inclusive photography studio. Find what you are good at and perfect it.

Thanks Chelsi! To see more about McFadden Studios, check out their WeddingPhotoLove profile or head straight to their website.

Spaghetti with Meat Sauce ? Eat, Live, Run

Wow, I am so excited to share this recipe with y?all today!!!

I don?t know about you, but the start of fall makes me crave comforting meals like homemade spaghetti sauce. There?s just something to standing in front of the stove, stirring a HUGE pot of sauce while it simmers for hours that calms me right down. I made this sauce, which is my mother?s recipe and, in my opinion, the best tasting spaghetti sauce in the entire world, a couple weeks ago when my book came out. I included this recipe in the book so I made it to celebrate the launch. After a few bites, Adam claimed it was the best meat sauce he ever tasted. Bold statement, huh? It?s true! Two days later I made another huge batch to take over to Ashley?s house because she is pregnant and has morning sickness so badly that she can?t even stand to open her fridge to cook. Let?s just say that it was a gift very well received by her husband and daughter.

I never included this recipe on my blog before because, well, it was sort of an old family secret, but I think it?s time you guys taste it for yourself.

I grew up eating this sauce. Just the smell of it reminds of home. It?s actually my mother?s ex-boyfriend?s recipe from way back in the day. I?m glad things didn?t work out between them {or else I wouldn?t be here right now!}, but I AM glad they were together long enough for her to grab this amazing sauce recipe. I?m not sure how my dad feels about that, but I do know he loves this spaghetti sauce as well.

Now for the ?secrets? that make this sauce so addicting!

1. Simmering the sauce for two hours with lots of cheese in mixed in.

2. Wine and lots of it.

3. Garlic salt and lots of it.

4. A blend of ground beef and hot Italian sausage.

I can?t believe I just shared that! But good?there are no secrets between us anymore. I feel better, don?t you?

Like most sauces, there?s no real ?recipe? for this. The recipe in the book is pretty loose because it really is ?just a pinch of this and a drizzle of that?. However, last time when I made it for Ashley?s family I wrote down exactly what I did {or tried to, at least}. You still have the ability to alter the sauce to your taste buds and I encourage tasting it throughout the cooking process!

Just remember the golden rule: when in doubt, add more wine!

{that goes for yourself, too. duh}

Spaghetti with Meat Sauce

from White Jacket Required

serves 6-8

Print this Recipe!

Ingredients:

1.5 lbs ground beef (or turkey)

1 lb hot Italian sausage

20 oz sliced mushrooms

1 green bell pepper, chopped

1 yellow onion, chopped

1 red bell pepper, chopped

1.5 tbsp olive oil

1 28-oz can tomato puree

1 12-oz can tomato paste

24 oz tomato sauce

BIG splash red wine (whatever ?big splash? means to you: anywhere from 1/2 cup to 2 cups will do fine. Heh heh)

6 oz freshly grated Romano cheese

1 tbsp dried oregano

1 tbsp dried basil

1 bay leaf

1-2 tbsp sugar

garlic salt + pepper as needed

spaghetti noodles + additional grated cheese for serving

Directions:

Heat the olive oil in a large pot over medium heat. Once hot, add the onion, bell peppers and sliced mushrooms. Saute for about six ? eight minutes, until mushrooms are soft. Add ground beef and sausage meat. Cook until meat browns, stirring frequently with a large rubber spatula.

Add tomato puree, tomato sauce and tomato paste to the pot. Stir well. Then, add the bay leaf, wine, spices, sugar and cheese. Stir well and bring sauce to a simmer.

Simmer sauce for an hour and a half over low heat, stirring occasionally. Taste it as you cook, adding more wine, spices or garlic salt to suite your taste buds. The longer the sauce cooks, the better it will taste!

Serve sauce over hot spaghetti noodles with extra cheese. Sauce can be refrigerated for up to five days or frozen for up to three months. Sauce will taste better the next day, after flavors have time to meld.

Opinion: Mitt Romney Drops His 3 a.m. Phone Call

Fair warning for what's ahead: I once worked for a Democratic president. As I say in a discussion with Ta-Nehisi Coates included in our?new?Atlantic?eBook, in this election I prefer the Democratic position to the Republican in economic policy, in foreign policy, and in social policy. Weigh that as you may.

On the basis of the past 18 hours, I will now say that I also strongly prefer the Democratic presidential candidate to the Republican on temperamental grounds. Mitt Romney's response to the murder of American diplomats in Libya was his "3 a.m. phone call" moment, and what it revealed was not good.?

The 3 a.m. phone call is shorthand for the unforeseen emergency that requires both a quick reaction and the beginning of longer second- and third-stage responses. Often the most important immediate decision is?not?to react immediately. There are times when every minute counts, but not usually. The first impulse, the first wave of fragmentary information, the first set of available options -- these often turn out to be misleading.?

People at the operational level inside the U.S. government had to respond immediately to news of the attacks and chaos in Egypt and Libya. But U.S. officials did not have to say anything in public right away. And they didn't. This morning, first Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and then President Obama expressed sentiments appropriate for a nation whose interests and people had been attacked.?

Each began by talking about the commitment and sacrifice of the Americans who serve their country overseas; then they condemned the violence of the attack; then they promised justice; then they affirmed America's belief in free expression of all views but said that this could never be an excuse for violence. They spoke for the country, and its values, and the people it had lost.?

Mitt Romney could have waited, as they did. When he spoke, he could have said essentially the same thing as they did: We honor the people who serve us. We condemn the violence they endured. We express sorrow and support to their families, and we affirm belief in our values. Americans disagree on many issues, including foreign policy, but those disputes can wait until another day.

But that is not what he said. When he first heard about the violence and protests last night, he rushed to condemn the administration before anyone knew fully what was going on. After he had had a few hours to think, Romney dug himself in far deeper with a graceless press conference whose dominant theme was partisan criticism of the administration.

In short, when faced with a 3 a.m. test, he reacted immediately, rather than having the instinct to wait. And after he waited, he mistook this as a moment for partisanship rather than for at least the appearance of statesmanlike national unity. The irony, of course, is that resisting the partisan impulse today would have been the greatest possible boost to his horse-race prospects two months from now.

Think of this temperament and these instincts in a command role, and with stakes much higher than they were today.

As I say, for me this is one more reason to prefer the Democratic to the Republican candidate this year. But I think I would have felt as strongly about Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, or Secretary Clinton if they had used their speeches today mainly to attack the GOP for policies that had allegedly brought on this tragedy. And would have said so.

You never know when these moments will come, or what they will expose when they do. Mitt Romney has shown us something that will be hard to forget.

Are Your Switches And Sockets Really Tough... | Gather

Do you have a busy household? Are you forever hoovering up after your kids, if so you will know how easy it is to bang your Hoover in to your power sockets and crack them or mark them. Indeed whilst white plastic sockets are the choice of the majority of home owners, they can mark easily and be prone to showing scratches, and in particular they crack easily when hit hard with a Hoover or furniture and the plastic case can also crack if the screws are over tightened.

This means that they are not ideal for use in high traffic areas such as a staffroom kitchen or a busy home household. So if you want to replace your sockets with something a little more durable then why not consider switching to stainless steel power sockets instead?

Firstly to dispel one big myth, you are no more likely to be electrocuted by a stainless steel power socket than you are a plastic one provided that your electricity supply is fitted with a Residual Current Device (RCD), which will cut the power in milliseconds in the event of an Earth leakage problem.

Secondly whilst they can get scratched by a ring, they will not do so any more than a plastic socket, indeed minor scratches can be polished out of stainless steel, whereas you will not be able to do this with plastic ones

Also whilst in general this means that whilst white plastic sockets are cheap to replace, it can be time consuming and expensive to get an electrician to replace one.

Stainless steel by its name and nature is highly resistant to staining and any felt tip, pen or crayon marks should not stain the socket permanently and even the toughest of marks should come off with a solvent cleaner unlike white plastic, which can be permanently marked by pen.

Also by opting for stainless steel light switches as well as sockets, every room that you put them in will have a ?quality? feel to it, and they will become a feature of the room and not just a functional switch.

Stainless steel light switches are a particularly good idea to fit in high traffic areas as they are very hard to mark and can easily be wiped clean with a metal polishing cloth.

Whilst you can source them from your local Do It Yourself (DIY) store, you may well find them cheaper to purchase from an online electrical specialist.

The Electrical Counter supply a wide range of electrical wholesale products in the UK including top quality switches and sockets such as Nexus plug sockets and Nexus metal sockets.
