Chinese Roadhouse ? My Way or The Highway

by Bunk Strutts

The House in the Middle of the Street: A car stops beside a house in the middle of a newly built road in Wenling, Zhejiang province, November 22, 2012. An elderly couple refused to sign an agreement to allow their house to be demolished. They say that compensation offered is not enough to cover rebuilding costs, according to local media.

That place screams for a safety sign mounted high on both sides of the house:

The Florida Panthers gear up for the shortened NHL season

Florida Panthers practice (14) SUNRISE, Fla -

Let the games begin -- finally.

The Florida Panthers are officially preparing for their shortened season after the National Hockey League Players' Association ratified a new collective bargaining agreement Saturday. The agreement ends the lockout that began September 15. The agreement came after a sometimes acrimonious process to retool the labor deal between the players' association and the league.

The NHL season will officially get underway Saturday, three months later than scheduled, the league announced on its website. Late that night, NHL teams also released their updated 48-game schedules.

The Panthers will open the season on Saturday, January 19 as they host their southeast division rivals, the Carolina Hurricanes. There are 32 men on this year?s training roster. Each will undergo medical and physical testing on Sunday.

On Monday, the Panthers will be back on the ice for their first official practice of the season. They have already held some unofficial time on the ice. Many of the players returned to South Florida? after learning a tentative agreement had been reached to put an end to that months-long lockout.

During on-and-off negotiations, the NHL scrapped its preseason, all games through 2012 and threatened to scratch the entire season if a deal couldn't be reached.

But on January 6, the league and the players announced they'd struck a tentative agreement after a 16-hour negotiating session.

The league's board of governors approved the deal Wednesday, but it wasn't official until Saturday. Hours after the players ratified the agreement, leaders from the two sides signed a memorandum of understanding about the terms of the new 10-year labor deal.

Three games will open the truncated regular season at 3 p.m. ET on Saturday: Pittsburgh at Philadelphia, Ottawa at Winnipeg and Chicago at Los Angeles, the reigning Stanley Cup champion.

The season will be 48 games, down from the standard 82. The regular season ends April 27.

The last time the league had labor strife, the entire 2004-05 season was eliminated.

White House Denies Call for Trillion-Dollar Coin to Avoid Debt Ceiling

Jan 12, 2013 6:27pm

The Obama administration has killed any notion of minting trillion-dollar platinum coins to solve the nation?s debt ceiling woes.

In a written statement released today, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney says there are only ?two options? to deal with the looming need for the U.S. government to pay creditors for federal funding it has already spent. Minting the proposed currency to pay it off and avoid an impending battle with Capitol Hill is not one of them.

?Congress can pay its bills or it can fail to act and put the nation into default,? he writes.

Carney blames Congressional Republicans for having ?played politics? during the last negotiations over the country?s borrowing limit in summer 2011. The stalled talks resulted in a downgrade of the U.S. credit rating by Standard and Poor?s.

?The President and the American people won?t tolerate Congressional Republicans holding the American economy hostage again simply so they can force disastrous cuts to Medicare and other programs the middle class depend on while protecting the wealthy,? the statement reads. ?Congress needs to do its job.?

The Treasury Department has been staving off the ceiling using accounting tricks for months ? most recently on Dec. 31. But with no comprehensive solution reached during the recent ?Fiscal Cliff? negotiations, a brewing fight on how to deal with the $16.4 trillion borrowing limit is set for the late winter.

ANALYSIS:? How do you solve a problem like the debt ceiling?

The coin proposal has floated around academia and economic policy circles for some time, but gained traction after the cliff ordeal, when it was taken up by cheeky monetary wonks and some members of the progressive left.

The idea follows that should Congress fail to extend the debt limit, Treasury could begin minting trillion dollar coins (in a process explained mostly seriously by?Jim Pethokoukis on his American Enterprise Institute blog), a number of which could then be put toward fulfilling debt obligations in the event new legislation stalls in Congress. The Federal Reserve would hold the hefty currency until it was time to pay the bills.

While there are laws in place to regulate how much paper, gold, silver or copper currency can be circulated by the government, there is nothing so clearly stated when it comes to platinum.

The White House statement comes a day after Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and Democrats urged the president to ?take any lawful steps? to avoid default ? ?without Congressional approval, if necessary.? In response Republican Leader Mitch McConnell railed against the notion in a written statement.

?Democrats are looking at everything from the ridiculous (printing a trillion-dollar coin) to outright abdication of Congressional responsibility,? it reads. ?But avoiding this problem will only make it worse.?

The idea to mint the coins as a way around the federal debt ceiling won a high profile advocate Friday when Pulitzer Prize winning economist Paul Krugman used his NYT column to say ?Mint the coin!?

But a senior administration official told ABC News there was one key factor ? decisive factor ? in making that course of action impossible: The Federal Reserve said it would not view the coin as viable.

?Since they wouldn?t view the coin as viable, the issue isn?t not wanting to do the coin. ?We just can?t,? the White House official said.

In other words, the scheme favored by folks like Krugman just would not work

ABC?s Gregory Krieg contributed reporting.

(AP) ? Looking for broader remedies to gun violence, Vice President Joe Biden is reaching out to the video game industry for ideas as the White House seeks to assemble proposals in response to last month's massacre at a Connecticut elementary school.

Biden is scheduled to meet with video game representatives Friday as the White House explores cultural factors that may contribute to violent behavior.

The vice president, who is leading a task force that will present recommendations to President Barack Obama on Tuesday, met with other representatives from the entertainment industry, including Comcast Corp. and the Motion Picture Association of America, on Thursday.

Friday's meeting comes a day after the National Rifle Association rejected Obama administration proposals to limit high-capacity ammunition magazines and dug in on its opposition to an assault weapons ban, which Obama has previously said he will propose to Congress. The NRA was one of the pro-gun rights groups that met with Biden during the day.

In previewing the meeting with the video game industry, Biden recalled the late Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan of New York, who lamented during crime bill negotiations in the 1980s that the country was "defining deviancy down."

It's unclear what, if anything, the administration is prepared to recommend on how to address the depiction of violence in the media.

White House press secretary Jay Carney last month suggested that not all measures require government intervention.

"It is certainly the case that we in Washington have the potential, anyway, to help elevate issues that are of concern, elevate issues that contribute to the scourge of gun violence in this country, and that has been the case in the past and it certainly could be in the future," Carney said then.

On gun control, however, the Obama administration is assembling proposals to curb gun violence that would include a ban on sales of assault weapons, limits on high-capacity ammunition magazines and universal background checks for gun buyers.

"The vice president made it clear, made it explicitly clear, that the president had already made up his mind on those issues," NRA president David Keene said after the meeting. "We made it clear that we disagree with them."

Opposition from the well-funded and politically powerful NRA underscores the challenges that await the White House if it seeks congressional approval for limiting guns and ammunition. Obama can use his executive powers to act alone on some gun measures, but his options on the proposals opposed by the NRA are limited without Congress' cooperation.

Obama has pushed reducing gun violence to the top of his domestic agenda following last month's mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman slaughtered 20 children and six adults before killing himself. The president put Biden in charge of an administration task force and set a late January deadline for proposals.

"I committed to him I'd have these recommendations to him by Tuesday," Biden said Thursday, during a separate White House meeting with sportsmen and wildlife groups. "It doesn't mean it's the end of the discussion, but the public wants us to act."

The vice president later met privately with the NRA and other gun-owner groups for more than 90 minutes. Participants in the meeting described it as an open and frank discussion, but one that yielded little movement from either side on long-held positions.

Richard Feldman, the president of the Independent Firearm Owners Association, said all were in agreement on a need to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill. But when the conversation turned to broad restrictions on high-capacity magazines and assault weapons, Feldman said Biden suggested the president had already made up his mind to seek a ban.

"Is there wiggle room and give?" Feldman said. "I don't know."

White House officials said the vice president didn't expect to win over the NRA and other gun groups on those key issues. But the administration was hoping to soften their opposition in order to rally support from pro-gun lawmakers on Capitol Hill.

Biden's proposals are also expected to include recommendations to address mental health care and violence on television, in movies and video games. Those issues have wide support from gun-rights groups and pro-gun lawmakers.

As the meetings took place in Washington, a student was shot and wounded at a rural California high school and another student was taken into custody.

During his meeting with sporting and wildlife groups, Biden said that while no recommendations would eliminate all future shootings, "there has got to be some common ground, to not solve every problem but diminish the probability that our children are at risk in their schools and diminish the probability that firearms will be used in violent behavior in our society."

Biden also talked about holes in the National Instant Criminal Background Check System that occur when states don't relay information to the database used by dealers to check purchasers. Advocates blame Congress for not fully funding a law that provides money to help states send records to the database.

Gun-control backers see plenty of room for executive action when it comes to improving background checks and other areas.

For example, advocates say Obama could order the Justice Department to prosecute more people flagged by background checks as prohibited purchasers when they try to buy guns; expand a rule that requires dealers to notify the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco Firearms and Explosives when someone tries to buy multiple semiautomatic rifles, a program now confined to Mexico border states; and increase enforcement actions at gun shows.

The group Mayors Against Illegal Guns has sent the White House 40 steps it says would save lives and dramatically improve enforcement of existing laws without any action by Congress.

Several Cabinet members have also taken on an active role in Biden's gun violence task force, including Attorney General Eric Holder. He met Thursday with Wal-Mart, the nation's largest firearms seller, along with other retailers such as Bass Pro Shops and Dick's Sporting Goods.

The president hopes to announce his administration's next steps to tackle gun violence shortly after he is sworn in for a second term. He has pledged to push for new measures in his State of the Union address.

The Five Most Glamorous Casinos - Blog ? Startle

SB_Casinos_CreditCasinodeMonte-Carlo_TheRitzClub_CasinoBaden-BadenThere?s something inherently luxurious about a place where large sums of currency are exchanged. Still, there are some casinos that raise the stakes in opulence more than others, providing you not only with glittering lights and elegant gambling stations, but with world-class dining, shopping and entertainment as well. These five players take luxe to the next level, and we?re betting you?ll agree.

Casino de Monte-Carlo, Monaco

One of the world?s first major casinos, this Monaco gambling complex debuted in the 1850s as a way to ?save? the ruling House of Grimaldi from bankruptcy. There?s a certain intrigue to a place with this kind of history?local citizens are still forbidden to gamble?and upon entering the Beaux Arts style building, you?ll be transported to another era. Gaming happens underneath ornate, gilded and frescoed ceilings and crystal chandeliers, all surrounded by tapestries and fine art that were restored during a multi-stage renovation completed in 2011. A new terrace was also added during the project, so you can gamble in the fresh air while you ogle the amazing sea views.

Casino dress code: Appropriate attire is required in the gaming rooms (no sport shoes or flip-flops). In private rooms, jackets are mandatory after 8 p.m. No military or other uniforms.

Play this: Trente et Quarante (30 and 40). Monte Carlo is known for this lively and charming French table game?one you?re unlikely to see outside of Europe. Players bet on which of two hands will have the lower score (the winning total must always be between 30 and 40).

After cashing out: Enjoy cocktails in the festive, luxurious La Salle Blanche. The sumptuous blue and cream lounge features a grand bar and funky entertainment.

Casino Baden-Baden, Germany

This German gaming and wellness destination (the word ?baden? means bathe in German) is a quiet town on the outskirts of the Black Forest. During the Prussian era, it became an exclusive respite for Europe?s elite after the queen visited. While certainly more accessible nowadays, the casino that Marlene Dietrich called ?the most beautiful casino in the world? still has a seductive lure. The d?cor exudes luxury; deep shades of crimson cover the floors, walls and draperies, and massive crystal chandeliers are suspended by lush velvet ropes. Gilded gold fixtures and mirrors adorn the walls throughout adding grandeur and opulence to the space. Not interested in gambling? You can simply take a guided tour of the historic property.

Casino dress code: To play table games, jacket and ties are required for gentlemen.

Play this: Tempt fate at the roulette table. The game has a colorful history at Baden-Baden; Leo Tolstoy lost a pile of money playing roulette here?money he borrowed from fellow novelist Ivan Turgenev. Another cool fact: In 1955, real silver and gold chips were used for roulette in honor of the Casino?s 100-year anniversary, but were stopped soon after because guests kept taking them as ?souvenirs.?

After cashing out: Pay a visit to one of the famed spas nearby. Caracalla Spa is a 43,000-square-foot complex featuring thermal waters in pools, grottos, whirlpools and saunas?not to mention a host of massage and treatment options. Friedrichsbad is a combo of Irish and Roman bathing traditions; guests rotate through a precise 17-step bathing ritual. Note: This detoxifying experience is not for the shy; the spa adheres to a traditionally ?garment-free? policy and (gasp!) men and women bathe together, except on certain days.

Wynn Las Vegas

Equal parts opulent and witty, the luxurious setting at Forbes Travel Guide Four-Star Wynn Las Vegas makes for a stylish, sexy gaming experience. Walking through the massive resort you?ll feel a bit like Alice in Wonderland?from the oversized, colorful parasols that welcome you inside to the lush, exotic gardens surrounding the desert retreat. You?ll gamble amidst the traditional glittering, whirling Las Vegas lights?though the casino d?cor does feature whimsical details, like palm trees, red chandeliers, fountain views and oversized sparkling flower petals on the walls.

Casino dress code: Resort casual.

Play this: Put on your best face at the Poker Room. The 26-table room offers limits for beginners to pros (so, er, watch out), and includes No Limit Hold?em, 7 Card Stud, Pot Limit Omaha and more.

After cashing out: Dine at Mizumi, a Forbes Travel Guide Recommended restaurant awash in seductive, red lacquer and overlooking a cascading man-made koi pond and waterfall. Big spender? You can enjoy chef Devin Hashimoto?s modern Japanese-style cuisine alfresco at the restaurant?s signature private pagoda table.

The Ritz Club, London

Classy, thy name is The Ritz Club. The high-stakes?and members-only?casino is located in the basement-level, former ballroom of The Ritz London and entering it feels as if you are stepping into a James Bond movie. In fact, you could be; a film about the Bond movies was once filmed in the Club?s Amber Room, and as the story goes, taping was continually interrupted by the rumblings of the Underground train, to the amusement of the crew and Sir Roger Moore himself. The Club features an open gaming salon?think rich woods and tapestries, domed ceilings and chairs with red and blue crushed velvet cushions?and discrete private rooms for ultimate high-rollers.

Casino dress code: Gentlemen are required to wear a jacket and collared shirt. No sports clothes or sneakers.

Play this: Tap into the Bond-style suspense with a game of Punto Banco. In this close relative of Baccarat, players bet on one of two hands?the ?Player? or the ?Bank?; the winner is the one with the hand closest to nine.

After cashing out: Enjoy made-to-order cuisine at the Club?s award-winning restaurant, where multiple chefs specialize in international cuisine including French, Italian, Chinese, Lebanese, Thai and Indian. There?s also an extensive classic pudding menu. Warm sweet blinis with a kumquat compote, anyone?

The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, Macau

A stay at The Venetian Macao Resort Hotel can only be described as living large?literally. Modeled after its Las Vegas sister, the Macau luxury casino is a 10.6-million-square-foot complex on Macau?s Cotai Strip, complete with 550,000 square feet of gaming space, thousands of slot machines and a 15,000-seat arena for sports and entertainment events (aka the CotaiArena). The gilded d?cor throughout features all the requisite faux-Venice splendor you?d expect, including gondola rides.

Casino dress code: No hats or sunglasses may be worn in the casino.

Play this: Dragon Phoenix is a simple game of two coins that debuted here at the Venetian in 2011. One of the players tosses two coins in the air, and everyone bets on which side they will land; instead of heads and tails, it?s a dragon and phoenix.

After cashing out: It might be hard to stay at the casino table with all the events happening at this resort. There are 56 restaurants featuring Asian and Western cuisine, a museum exhibition center (Human Bodies runs through February), and a range of live music and dance shows at the property?s different arenas. Or, for a more chill experience, use your winnings to rent a poolside cabana. Your private party for two to four includes air conditioning, a plasma-screen TV, a mini fridge and, of course, food and beverage service.

Use hypnosis to help lose the unwanted pounds and achieve your ...

While most people are clamouring for gym memberships and online dietary eating plans to help them lose weight, why not consult a hypnotist about your health and fitness goals? Hypnosis helps control and reverse eating addiction without adverse side effects or invasive action. Your subconscious mind controls your cravings, metabolism, and weight management. What a wonderful gift to give yourself and those you love.

Join the health revolution and evolve into the new you. Find a hypnotist in your local area to facilitate the process. Hypnosis has long lasting effects and can be used in conjunction with other complementary protocols. Hypnosis requires no touch, no ingestion of substance, and no long term care. Hypnosis is a non-invasive option to health and wellness.

Don't

Cartoon with x mark

Do

Do be open minded to success

There are many alternatives to attaining a healthy lifestyle. If you are already aware of healthy eating, drinking, and exercise regimens, and you still find yourself unable or unwilling to lose weight, hypnosis offers a productive alternative.

Do find a qualified hypnotist

This will be easy for you if you do your research. There are many online practitioner resources such as International Hypnosis Federation, American Board of Hypnosis and others specializing in hypnosis referrals. When interviewing a hypnotist, remember to be honest and thorough in discussing your goal and desired outcome.

Do be patient for results

Hypnosis is a gentle protocol. While changes in habit begin immediately during hypnosis, physical changes can take time. The subconscious mind sets in motion the desired behavior then the change in behavior affects your physical body. Just like any desirable weight loss protocol, fat burns slowly when weight is lost in a healthy manner. Metabolism will increase, appetite will decrease, and your physical body will change appropriately.

Do get physical

When using hypnosis for weight loss, utilize your desire to be fit by getting active. Helping your body respond faster is good, and physical exercise supports your alternative health goals. Not only will exercise help you attain your desired weight faster, you will feel better too. Did you know when you exercise, ?feel good? chemicals called endorphins are released in the brain? These chemicals give you a sense of well being and desire to continue with your exercise routine. Why fight it? Be the best you can be and get moving.

Do be accepting of results

Body image can create an issue after hypnosis if you?re not prepared. Your body is going to improve, so it?s important your attitude improves, too. Remember, change is good and you are making positive changes. As you become fit, replace clothing that no longer fits. Treat yourself to the spa appointment you?ve been putting off. It?s time to accept and congratulate yourself for a job well done. Your new fit body is well deserved, so enjoy the work you?ve put forth in accomplishment.

Don't

Do not treat hypnosis as a phase

Hypnosis for weight loss can be long lasting if you maintain your fitness level. This means regular workouts and reminding yourself of your long term goals. If your hypnotist recorded your session(s), utilize your recordings as reminders of deep subconscious suggestions. If you feel like continuing to see your practitioner, even better. Believing is seeing, so believe in your long term results and enjoy seeing them.

Do not be surprised by the results

As in life, you get what you give. After your hypnotic adventure, you will notice decreased appetite, increased stamina, and boosted metabolism. This will change your physical appearance. Remember, you?re accustomed to being less fit for longer than you?ve enjoyed your new fit body and appearance. Let old habits and paradigms fall away with the pounds of excess weight. As you discover and enjoy the ease and mobility of your new frame, realize that hypnotic inductions are not magic, instead it?s your subconscious helping your body attain maximum health and wellness. The mind-body connection is strong and the results are positive.

Do not entrap people for compliments

Occasionally, our accomplishments aren?t enough to satisfy our ego when physical changes occur. After hypnosis, if you find yourself searching for compliments from your friends or family, that?s acceptable. Hypnosis is highly effective so you may find it takes time to adjust to your new body image. In the process, try to keep your need for reinforcement to those who support you the most. While most people will be happy for you and your new fitness level, some may feel left out of your special experience and new knowledge. This is a good time to include friends and share the experience and your process. You may just be the trendsetter.

Do not succomb to old habits

Remember that you have a new way of thinking now. You no longer have the same cravings, triggers, or emotional need to eat your proverbial feelings. Now that you have reached your goal, perhaps it?s time to create new goals for yourself so you can continue improving your health and fitness. Old habits are only old habits and no longer apply to your new way of thinking. You are the new you, so celebrate your new ways of feeling, too.

Do not be afraid to share your experience with others

The more you share your experiences of feeling healthy and fit, the more you reinforce the behavior to yourself. Friends and family love to be inspired by action not words. Since hypnosis has worked for you, perhaps you can encourage others to get healthy and fit with you. Suggest a salad or a bike ride and you might be surprised by who joins you. Be the success story in your home and community so you can inspire others, which in turn, encourages you to keep up a job well done.

Summary
Jumping cartoon

There are many implications of good health. Weight control is one health factor visible to others and determines how others see us. Many studies conclude people who are fit, live longer and are generally happier, receive higher pay, and are socially favorable to those that are not fit. In a country known for it?s abundance and well being, we value health and fitness as a direct correlation to mental health and fitness. Hypnosis is a perfect tool for weight loss because the protocol focuses on the subconscious, instigating the desire to achieve and maintain maximum fitness. Hypnosis is a non-invasive way to create a non-resistant environment for new and healthy suggestion in overcoming repetitive, destructive habits. Qualified hypnotists are abundant in most states.

All-mode base station radio and antenna for emergency ...

  1. Default All-mode base station radio and antenna for emergency communications?

If you could only have one all-mode base station radio for emergency communication use (assume a working generator or simple batteries for power), what would you choose? Portable use is not expected or required, although a good mobile rig should not neccessarily be disqualified, since an emergency situation can force mobile use.

Just curious. I expect to see quite a variance but it would be interesting to see if a particular rig was more heavily favored. It would need to cover all bands, at least 160-2m, and all modes, but CW use is less important.

Second part of the question is what antenna(s) would you pair that rig with? If you choose more of a base station radio, also choose a more permanent antenna system and if mobile, more of a mobile system. A DX antenna configuration is not as important as NVIS and east-west coast operation.

For emergency communications, you don't need all mode or all band...you just need something that works. For Interior Alaska, 60 meters is wonderful....low enough that NVIS works at night and high enough that the absorption is low during the day.

I agree "all band" probably isn't a real requirement for emergency communications.

I'd want a separate HF rig and a separate VHF rig that covered at least 2m FM (for "local" work), and I'd want to be able to listen to and use both at the same time, which is something that cannot be done with most transceivers.

I'd also want something very, very reliable and easy to operate, since after the Big One makes the roof fall on my head, I may not be thinking so clearly but still want to communicate. I'd also want something that can be powered by 12Vdc, and preferably even by 10.5 - 11.0Vdc, as batteries drain and maybe can't be recharged.

For home, I'd want a variety of antennas in case some fail, or in case propagation favors differing radiation angles at different times of day (which normally happens, anyway).

The bigger challenges for a home station for emergencies is securing adequate emergency power and ensuring that your antennas are still functional.

For HF operation, transcontinental operation is probably not needed, though there is a new Transcon Net operating on digital modes on 20 meters in the daytime. Gearing up for NVIS operation will probably be most useful. That means 160-80 - 60 and 40 meters.

I'd start with an indoor antenna - in the attic - where it is not subject to ice and wind. Then add an outdoor horizontal antenna. Surprisingly, the T2FD design from B+W has worked well for me, and will work on the NVIS bands. It's not the world's greatest antenna, but it doesn't need to be either. There are other companies out there selling T2FD's that I haven't tried. If you are on the right band at the right time, you can lay down a LOUD signal in a radius of 300 miles using NVIS and low power - 10 watts or less.

Indeed, 10 watts might be an important number. Consider The new Ten Tec Argonaut VI. You can buy a 100 watt amp for it. But it will be easier to keep the 10 watter on the air with batter power than a 100 watt rig. The Elecraft KX3 should be a nice option, too.

The 'default' all band radios are the IC-7000, IC-706, and FT-857/897. The 897 with batteries would be another good option if you have a means to recharge it. 20 watts might be better than 10. Study the choices and look at receive power drain - that will determine how long you can listen without recharging batteries. If you can find one - the IC-703 would be another good choice.

If you have unlimited funds, the IC-9100 is the answer.

Any of the-commercial rigs that have 160-2m are fine. Really. Buy what strikes your fancy.

For HF antenna a 160m dipole fed with ladder line and a hefty outboard antenna tuner is simplest and most flexible.

Your choice on 6m and 2m antennas.

I'd just use what I have right here in the shack - FT-950 for whatever band I hear folks on, with
a general coverage receiver to hear Radio Havana for the absolute honest accurate and up to date
information about what happened <grin>, 2m and 70cm for local repeater simple, and the most
important, local broadcast band on the 950 for local news.

Look into the FT-857D. You can work 70 cm, 2 m, 6 m through 160 m. You can work with 5 watts to conserve power or crank it up to call for help. As with most modern tranceivers you can work CW, AM, FM, SSB with it. The FT-857D is designed so that it can be used as a mobile unit, as well as, a base unit. It's small, light-weight and has a detachable faceplate (if you care to separate it). It has pretty low current draw when monitoring. But unlike it's little brother the 817, you can crank up the power when it's needed.

Regarding, antenna's a simple dual band slim jim is great for UHF, VHF (build one or just buy one for about $25.00). Simple dipoles for the others bands or use something easy like an end-fed and a tuner. I have a 40/80 m NVIS system sitting in the garage that can be setup in the back yard in about 10 minutes, if needed. I hope I never have a true need for it.

    What kind of "emergency" ?

Are we talking about a local event? Then 2 meter FM.

    Regional Traffic Handling? HF NVIS

Or we talking DoomsDay Prepper Emergency? Then you want a TS-2000 "Mars Modded" for open transmit and buried in a bunker in the middle of nowhere and an AR-15 to defend it from the crazed hordes of survivors who are going to be coming.

    I like your thinking.

My own radio can be configured for 5w-100w in 5w increments, which is very nice. It covers 160-10. Really wish it had VHF capability.

Anyway, I do think it's important to have all-mode capability. This would allow operation at any time of day or night, really.

I was thinking of a simple vertical for VHF for omnidirectional coverage to the local repeaters. This eliminates the need to drive a rotator. However, if (when) the repeaters fail, I could see how a yagi would be useful. Also maybe a 160/80/40 dipole and maybe a cobwebb for 20-10? Tunerless operation would be very nice. I like the idea of a simple dipole for emergency use.
