Better Metrics of Green Benefits Needed ... - Business Review Europe

NEW YORK, Sept.?24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --?McGraw-Hill Construction, part of The McGraw-Hill Companies (NYSE: MHP), today released its latest SmartMarket Executive Brief: Determining the Value of Green Building Investments: A Perspective From Industry Leaders on Triple Bottom Line Decision Making, in partnership with URS, at the White House's 2012 GreenGov Symposium. The report provides the findings of qualitative research conducted by McGraw-Hill Construction through interviews with sustainability leaders in the education, healthcare, retail, manufacturing and federal government sectors on their perspectives about decision making for green building investments.

The report reveals that in order for green building to continue to gain market share at a comparable rate to the past decade, more far-reaching benefits need to be documented and demonstrated to organizational leadership for them to increase their level of green investments. These include benefits across the spectrum of financial, environmental and social benefits?often referred to as the "triple bottom line."

"To date, owners have acted on compelling benefits from their green investments, mainly savings in energy, water, waste and lowered operating costs," said Harvey Bernstein, Vice President of Industry Insights and Alliances at McGraw-Hill Construction. "However, these are only a fraction of the advantages offered by green buildings?missing is a quantification of the full triple bottom line benefits from these investments, especially around the social benefits to human performance and well-being."

The study includes recommendations on actions needed in the industry in order to accelerate green investments across the built environment:

  • Evaluate social, environmental and financial goals together when making decisions on green building investments;
  • Create green building benchmarks through standardization and disclosure of operational building costs;
  • Compile data and case studies that establish the value of nonfinancial benefits of green building;
  • Create better tools using a more thorough, industry-consensus definition of lifecycle costing based on impacts across the triple bottom line;
  • Assemble a?public database of green project measures across the triple bottom line.

"The data confirm that sustainability is vital to business growth, for us and for our clients. The demand for business to demonstrate its ability to create value for all its stakeholders is paramount," said Lidia Berger, Vice President, Sustainable Practice Director ? Facilities at URS. "URS understands how to design, implement and measure the value of sustainable investment. Most importantly, we can provide our clients with a measurable return on investment based on projects' economic, social, and environmental impacts."

Through in-depth interviews with sustainability leaders, the report finds that organizations are using lifecycle cost analysis of operational savings to demonstrate the ROI of green and to justify green building projects. However, most respondents report there is a need for more data about the non-financial benefits of green to encourage their organizations to increase their investment in green building. This report also reveals the need for standardized measures that can fully capture the impact of green building across the triple bottom line.

The results of the study will be presented today at 3:15 p.m. as part of the Economic Valuation session at the White House's 2012 GreenGov Symposium in Washington, DC.

How Usher Beat The Fatherhood Odds | Praise 1300

?

More than four years ago, in one of my first columns for The Root, I wrote about pop star Usher Raymond?s proud papa moments in a piece titled ?What My Father Could Learn From Usher.?

At the time black fatherhood was dominating the airwaves with shows featuring Snoop Lion (n?e Dog), Deion Sanders and Rev. Run. Adding to the list of Cliff Huxtable heir apparents was Usher, who had just married Tameka Foster, the mother of his unborn son. The wedding wasn?t well-received by fans or Usher?s own mother, Johnetta. The ?controversy? baffled me because all I could see was a man standing up for the woman he loved.

As a fatherless child, I was awed by Usher?s 2008 appearance on MTV?s TRL. Addressing the rumors swirling around his new marriage and threatening to suck it down into a tabloid abyss, Raymond grabbed a mic and looked all the haters out there in TV Land directly in the eye: ?I?m a black, strong man in America standing up for my people as a man,? Usher said to the camera.

?To my wife, to my son, to my family, I?m making a stand that a lot of us should make. I could?ve been like any other man who would have a child and just, you know, live with that woman and continue to just, you know, play the game. I?m tryna do it the right way. This is the way you should do it. Pay attention, fellas.?Four years ago I wrote that I?d wished my own father had received a message like that in 1980. A message about sticking around and sticking to your guns. A message about what men ?should? be doing as opposed to what too many men were doing. It resonated with me and with readers.

Making Social Media Marketing A Win-Win Situation | Eric Chua ...

Utilizing social media is one of the best ways to increase business profits. With so many different sites and apps and niches out there, the options are literally limitless when it comes to growth potential. These tips and tricks can be used to get your more business if they are used correctly.

Ensure you are regularly updating and posting content on your site. Give contacts and readers information they can depend on and look forward to. Create a posting schedule or try signing up for services that post for you on a specific schedule. This will help you stay on people?s radar.

When you are marketing your products on Facebook, only include the most interesting, best selling items. Your followers will be content with just a few quality posts a day, so don?t overdo it. What you share should be of real value or interest to other people. Make sure that it?s something which your readers will enjoy seeing! Items such as quizzes, or boring surveys should not be targeted at your customers.

TIP! Updating your social media websites whenever you post new blog content will help alert customers to visit your site. This will allow your readers to see when you post new, interesting content that you want them to read.

Put some thought into the titles you give your videos on YouTube. Your titles should be original and contain strong keywords. Titles must catch a viewer?s attention and make people want to watch the video. Keep in mind that your video will come up as a suggestion when YouTube users watch a video described with similar keywords.

Make others feel that you have expertise in your field by helping people online as well as on social media pages. This will consistently bring new business your way because of your expertise. Look for people who need help in areas you are familiar with, and give them a hand. This can help generate new customers.

Make a catchy headline for each post. The headline is your readers? introduction to your content. You want to be able to catch their attention and make them interested in reading the rest of your article. So be sure to put some thought into coming up with a good one.

TIP! Always use an original title when you share videos on YouTube or other social networks. These titles must contain integral keywords if you want to have the most traffic possible.

In order to achieve the best possible results, create links to tie everything together. Include links if you have a blog where your consumers can see you on Twitter, YouTube and also if they want to like you at Facebook. On your profile page on Twitter, make sure to include the link to your Facebook page and blog. Linking all of your social media profiles together maximizes your revenue-generating potential by converting new customers.

Make it simple for visitors to follow your blog. Make sure people can see the button to subscribe to your feed. Instead, put it right near an important piece of content, as this will draw readers? eye your subscription link. Also, remember that some consumers are working with a slower Internet connection, and you want to make it possible for them to see the subscribe button as quick as possible.

Social Networking

TIP! Put subscription buttons for your RSS feed on all of your profiles at social media websites. This is the best way for your readers to find your social media profile.

Understand that social networks aren?t just another billboard where you passively post content for visitors to look at. Social networking provides a integral base to understanding your clientele. A well-designed social media marketing campaign can encourage would-be customers to form connections with your company and you. It is possible to speak with customers regarding your products, but you can also use social networking to personally interact with them.

While you can really benefit from using multilingual social media, don?t forget to target your local area. Learn about the main demographic in other countries and avoid a ?cookie clutter? approach for all of them. Area based customization will allow the customers to have a connection with you and your content, and they will be drawn in.

Social Media

TIP! The shorter you make your posts, the more effective they will be as marketing devices. Messages should be short enough to ensure that boredom is not possible; you want to make sure that visitors want to share your information with others.

You should now be able to see the amount of ways you can use social media to your advantage. You will see your business flourish when using social media marketing properly. Make sure you utilize the ideas you?ve read in this article in order to help your business start

TrineDay Announces a Work of Predictive Fiction, ?The Next 9/11 ...

Completed in August 2012, The Next 9/11? takes readers into the not-too-distant future for a hypothetical look back at December 2012?in order to describe a shadow reality that appears to be unfolding?exposing machinations leading up to a nuclear event in Phoenix, Arizona. The Most Dangerous Book in the World September 11, 2001 was merely a warm-up for December 25th, 2012. Forget the Mayan Apocalypse of 12/21/2012?it?s Christmas Day 2012 you should be worried about.

TrineDay announces a work of predictive fiction, ?The Next 9/11?,? an addendum to The Most Dangerous Book in the World, a book in which S.K. Bain lays out histhoughts on 9/11. In this lengthy addendum, Bain takes the occult script developed in that book and uses it as a criminal profile to predict the next mass ritual. However, he doesn?t play ?What If??He doesn?t write in hypothetical terms about this attack?he?s so confident in his prediction that he?s written about it in past tense. Just as Most Dangerous was a backward look at September 11, 2001, The Next 9/11? is an after-the-fact, in-depth analysis of an event that could well come to pass before the end of this year (2012), a work of predictive fiction.

Completed in August 2012, The Next 9/11? takes readers into the not-too-distant future for a hypothetical look back at December 2012?in order to describe a shadow reality that appears to be unfolding?exposing machinations leading up to a nuclear event in Phoenix, Arizona.

According to author Bain, September 11, 2001 was merely a warm-up for December 25th, 2012. Forget the Mayan Apocalypse of 12/21/2012?it?s Christmas Day 2012 you should be worried about. Although written as a backward look from a future vantage point, dissecting this hypothetical event and piecing together the occult script for ?Black Christmas,? this is no Dan Brown novel but rather a hard-hitting, true-to-life pre-crime expos? of the predictive programming and sophisticated psychological warfare tactics employed before, during and after the attack.

The hulking machinery of tyranny constructed upon the foundations of 9/11 only needs one thing to roar to life: a spark of ignition. The Next 9/11? predicts what this source of ignition will be, and it?s far more than a mere spark to be sure. And even if he?s wrong in his prediction, The Next 9/11?, is still a highly-informative exercise in analyzing occult-driven false-flag terrorism.

?This is not a book for the nervous,? says Peter Levenda in his foreword to The Next 9/11?. ?It should come with a warning, like a pack of cigarettes or an R-rated movie. But aren?t we tired of being protected by the state? Haven?t we finally realized that taking our shoes and belts off at airports is nothing more than theater? And isn?t the root of theater ritual itself??

The Next 9/11? is included as an addendum in the book, The Most Dangerous Book of the World (ISBN: 978-1937584-17-7), released on September 11, 2012, asa trade paperback and ebook, and is available where fine books are sold.

Author S.K. Bain is available for limited interviews.

Space shuttle Endeavour lands piggyback in California

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, California | Thu Sep 20, 2012 10:32pm EDT

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, California

(Reuters) - The space shuttle Endeavour, carried piggyback atop a jumbo jet, landed at Edwards Air Force Base in California on Thursday at the tail end of a cross-country trip to Los Angeles to begin its final mission as a museum exhibit.

The specially modified Boeing 747 with the newly retired spaceship perched on its back touched down safely at 12:50 p.m. local time (3:50 p.m. EDT) at Edwards, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles in the Mojave Desert.

NASA retired its shuttle fleet last year after completing the U.S. portion of the $100 billion International Space Station, a permanently staffed research complex that is owned by 15 nations and orbits about 250 miles above Earth.

Endeavour embarked on its last cross-county "ferry" journey on Wednesday from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and made several low-altitude passes over NASA centers in Mississippi, Louisiana and Texas before stopping for the night at Ellington Field near the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

The trip resumed early on Thursday, with Endeavour and its carrier jet making additional flyovers - one over Tucson, Arizona, in a salute to former Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and her husband, Mark Kelly, the retired astronaut who commanded Endeavour's final flight on his last mission in late May 2011.

Giffords, still recuperating from a gunshot wound to the head suffered in an attempt on her life last year, watched the flyover from the roof of a Tucson parking garage with her husband and mother, according to former aide C.J. Karamargin, who joined them.

"When it came into view, Mark said, 'There's my spaceship!'" Karamargin recounted. "Gabby was just elated, hooting and hollering like the rest of us were."

From Arizona, Endeavour and its carrier jet flew on to California, where the spacecraft was built two decades ago, for the landing at Edwards Air Force Base.

The sprawling installation used to serve as the primary landing site for NASA's shuttle program before the space agency built a landing facility for the orbiters at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Edwards then became the principal backup landing spot for shuttles in case of bad weather at Cape Canaveral.

Endeavour made seven landings at Edwards during its active tenure at NASA, most recently in November 2008.

FINAL FLIGHT

The shuttle was scheduled to depart Edwards on Friday for its very last ferry flight, and the final airborne journey of the entire space shuttle fleet, headed for Los Angeles International Airport.

The 75-ton (68-tonne) winged spacecraft will then undergo preparations to be moved next month through city streets from the airport to its permanent home at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles, where the shuttle will be put on public display starting October 30.

To make way for the mammoth orbiter along its 12-mile route to the museum, crews are cutting down nearly 400 trees, raising overhead utility wires and temporarily removing hundreds of utility poles, street lights and traffic signals. The science center has agreed to plant 1,000 new trees to replace those slated for removal.

Endeavour was built as a replacement for Challenger, the shuttle lost in a 1986 launch accident that killed seven astronauts. It went on to fly 25 missions, including 12 to build and outfit the space station, and logged nearly 123 million miles (198 million km) in flight during 4,671 orbits.

Endeavour is the second of NASA's three surviving shuttles to be sent to a museum. Discovery, NASA's oldest surviving shuttle, is on display at the Smithsonian Institution's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center outside Washington.

Atlantis, which flew NASA's 135th and final shuttle mission in July 2011, will be towed down the road to the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in November.

NASA lost a fourth shuttle, Columbia, in another fatal accident in 2003. That shuttle was not replaced. A shuttle test vehicle, Enterprise, which has never flown in space, was delivered to a New York City museum.

On its way from Edwards to the Los Angeles airport, Endeavour will soar atop its carrier jet on several last victory laps over California, including flyovers above San Francisco, Sacramento, Hollywood and even Disneyland at Anaheim.

NASA said on Thursday evening that the spacecraft's scheduled departure from Edwards had been delayed by one hour until 8:15 a.m. local time (11:15 a.m. EDT) on Friday due to forecasts of low clouds and fog in the San Francisco Bay Area. Its expected arrival time at LAX was updated to about 12:45 p.m. local time.

Double assault on tough types of leukemias

Friday, September 21, 2012

Investigators at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine have identified two promising therapies to treat patients with acute megakaryocytic leukemia (AMKL), a rare form of leukemia where the number of cases is expected to increase with the aging population.

The disease is characterized by an overload of white blood cells that remain forever young because they can't mature into specialized cells. Published in a recent issue of the journal Cell, the study found that the drug with the generic name alisertib (MLN8237), induced division and growth of healthy cells to overtake the proliferation or "blasts" of immature cells.

In the study, a mouse model with this leukemia that was treated with alisertib showed a striking reduction in the number of leukemia cells, including dramatic reductions in overwhelming white cell counts and the weights of their spleens and livers, which are indications of leukemia.

Alisertib has been tested before in humans with limited success to treat other types of leukemia and lymphoma, a cancer of the immune system. However, the drug should be effective against AKML in humans because it specifically targets the enzyme Aurora A kinase, said study senior author John Crispino, the Robert I. Lurie, MD, and Lora S. Lurie Professor of Hematology/Oncology at Feinberg. In normal cell development, this enzyme enables healthy cells to proliferate correctly, but with leukemia, is also allows adolescent cells to multiply unchecked if they are in the mix.

Crispino also is a member of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.

"Alisertib was really potent against the proliferation of cancer cells," Crispino said. "We were incredibly excited when we found that the drug we predict will reverse AMKL is already far along in clinical development. The fact that we don't have to start from scratch means we could be years closer to finding an effective therapy."

Crispino expects alisertib will be a more gentle cancer drug without the ravaging side effects of conventional chemotherapies. This is because the drug specifically targets a key enzyme, avoids healthy cells in the bone marrow and blood, and will probably be more effective at lower doses than drugs tested in previous studies.

"This study has given us a scientific rationale to take this drug to an early phase clinical trial in this very challenging form of leukemia," said Jessica Altman, M.D., assistant professor in hematology/oncology at Feinberg and an oncologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Altman also is a member of the Lurie Cancer Center. Together with other leukemia specialists, she is designing a multi-center clinical trial planned to open in 2013.

Investigators also identified another attack plan for other types of leukemias. Sifting through 9,000 chemical compounds during the study, they found that dimethylfasudil boosted the number of mature bone marrow cells and shot down malignant ones.

Dimethylfasudil could be useful against AMKL and tolerated better by patients, Crispino says. However, he adds that alisertib is moving forward now because there is urgent need and the drug is available. Meanwhile, Crispino's team and other scientists at Northwestern's Center for Molecular Innovation and Drug Discovery are developing the compound dimethylfasudil into an acceptable anticancer drug for clinical trials, which may take two to three years.

Investigators believe dimethylfasudil may be valuable to fight other types of leukemias because it has broad action against other enzymes that let cancer cells reproduce.
