$99 Parallella supercomputer appears on Kickstarter ? Computer ...

This could be a True Break Through in Parallel Computing!!!:)

Don

The launch of the Raspberry Pi has been a huge success story, and promises to get cheap computers into the hands of kids and hobbyists around the world. But it has also had another effect?it has inspired others to look into alternative methods of developing cheap computing platforms.

One company taking inspiration from the Raspberry Pi Foundation is Adapteva, which focuses on semiconductor technology and has developed a very efficient multicore microprocessor architecture. Now they intend to use that architecture to offer up a $99 supercomputer with the help of Kickstarter.

The project is called Parallella, with the main aim being to make parallel computing open and accessible to everyone at a very cheap price point. Adapteva intends to do this by using its Epiphany RISC processors, which promise up to 45GHz of CPU performance using only 5 Watts and fitting on a board the size of a credit card.

The Parallella computer itself combines the "Epiphany Multicore Accelerator" consisting of 16 or 64 cores, with a dual-core ARM A9 processor, 1GB RAM, MicroSD, USB 2.0, HDMI, Ethernet, and Ubuntu Linux. It's also a completely open platform, meaning everything is open source including the architecture and the SDK.

Top 8 Debate Zingers

Almost all presidential and vice presidential debates include good lines. But not every debate includes a real zinger: a rejoinder that nails the opponent and sticks in viewers? minds for weeks to come. Here are eight of National Journal?s favorites.

1. ?You are no Jack Kennedy.? Sen. Lloyd Bentsen, D-Texas, cut a dour figure onstage at the 1988 vice presidential debate in Omaha. But that evening he also delivered one of the best put-downs in political debate history, in response to a claim by Sen. Dan Quayle of Indiana?that ?I have as much experience in the Congress as Jack Kennedy did when he sought the presidency.? Speaking slowly and deliberately, Bentsen replied, "Senator, I served with Jack Kennedy. I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy.? The audience burst into applause. ?That was really uncalled for, senator,? Quayle said, with a stony face. ?You?re the one who was making the comparison, senator,? Bentsen replied.

?2. ?There you go again.? Here?s a line so well-received that current GOP nominee Mitt Romney has said he?d like to use it against President Obama. It landed at the only televised debate between Ronald Reagan and President Carter. ?Governor Reagan, as a matter of fact, began his political career campaigning around this nation against Medicare,? Carter said; Reagan laughed and shook his head. Carter wrapped up his pitch for a program of national health insurance, and it was Reagan?s turn to reply. ?Governor. There you go again,? Reagan said, and explained that he?d merely been a proponent of a different piece of legislation. It was such a good line that Reagan reprised it in his debate with former Vice President Walter Mondale in 1984.

3. ?Senator Dole has richly earned his reputation as a hatchet man.? A question over President Nixon?s pardon led to a rather dark exchange between Sens. Bob Dole and Walter Mondale during the first-ever vice presidential debate, held in Houston in 1976. Dole said he wouldn?t be addressing Nixon?s pardon because ?it?s not a very good issue??as done and dusted as the wars in Vietnam, Korea, and the two World Wars, which he characterized as ?all Democrat wars.? Mondale responded, ?Senator Dole has richly earned his reputation as a hatchet man tonight.? Dole?s odd allegation?and Mondale?s pithy response?became the most remembered moment of the debate.

4. ?If Bush keeps it up, he's going to be the Joe Isuzu of American politics.??Both Vice President George H.W. Bush and Massachusetts Gov. Mike Dukakis managed to get in a few zingers during the 1988 presidential debate in Winston-Salem, N.C. Dukakis claimed Bush couldn?t be serious about bringing down the deficit, because the Republican wanted both more defense spending and lower taxes. ?If he keeps this up he's going to be the Joe Isuzu of American politics,? Dukakis said, referring to a '70s car salesman famous for his over-the-top TV ads. ?Is this the time to unleash our one-liner? That answer was about as clear as Boston Harbor,? Bush retorted. ?

5. ?I?m going to try to help you do that, Joe.? Dick Cheney didn?t miss a beat when then-Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman brought up Cheney?s private-sector career during the 2000 vice presidential debate at Kentucky?s Centre College. ?I'm pleased to see, Dick, from the newspapers that you're better off than you were eight years ago, too,? Lieberman said. ?I can tell you, Joe, the government had absolutely nothing to do with it,? Cheney responded, to laughter. Missing the chance to jab Cheney over his Halliburton connections, Lieberman said, ?I can see my wife and I think she's thinking, ?I wish he would go out into the private sector.' ? Cheney dryly remarked, ?I?m going to try to help you do that, Joe??a zinger that ended the exchange.

6. ?I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent?s youth and inexperience.? When President Reagan ran for reelection in 1984, he was already the oldest president in American history?a fact raised during a presidential debate on national-security issues. Reagan told Baltimore Sun reporter Hank Trewhitt, a panelist, that there was no doubt in his mind he had the capacity to be commander in chief. ?Not at all, Mr. Trewhitt, and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent?s youth and inexperience.?

7. ?Who am I? Why am I here?? Ross Perot?s running mate in 1992, retired vice admiral James Stockdale, was a Vietnam war hero who joined Perot on the independent ticket essentially as a personal favor. At the 1992 vice presidential debate, Stockdale?s opening statement was almost painfully honest: ?Who am I? Why am I here?? he asked. ?I?m not a politician, everybody knows that.? The Medal of Honor recipient?s oddball opening line drew laughs, but it also brought front-and-center the question of what he was doing on the vice presidential ticket.?

8. ?Where?s the beef?? Presidential and vice presidential debates aren?t the only places where a candidate can work in a zinger: The 1984 Democratic debate will forever be remembered for one pop-culture reference, landed by former Vice President Walter Mondale. After Sen. Gary Hart wrapped up touting a long list of his new ideas, Mondale responded, ?When I hear your new ideas, I?m reminded of that ad: Where?s the beef?? Fresh in many minds at the time was fast-food chain Wendy?s series of commercials in which an elderly woman poses?that question when she is presented with a burger that?s all bun.

Concerns with contagion - STDs - MedHelp

Welcome to the forum.??Thanks for your questions.

2,3) I'm going first to these, because they contain the most important information you provide -- that you were immunized against hepatitis B virus (HBV) 6 years ago.??You can be very certain you are protected.??Although it is true that the vaccine isn't perfect, it is over 90% reliable -- probably close to 99%.??If you would like to confirm your immunity, you could be tested.??Having been immunized, a test for HBV antibody would probably be positive.??If so, you will know you are 100% protected.??In that case, you can safely have any and all sexual practices with your partner, without condoms for vaginal or anal sex.

1,4) Oral sex probably rarely transmits HBV, even with oral sores.??In the slight chance your immunization didn't work, condoms are highly protective.

Your last, unnumbered question also is important. Not all people with chronic HBV infection are highly infectious; and if your partner's hepatitis B surface antigen test (HBsAg) is only intermittently positive, it is likely her blood level of the virus is low and transmission risk might also be very low.??Also, she could have a test for hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg); if that's negative, as it is in most chronically infected persons, then she is minimally infectious.

So here is my summary advice:??You and your partner should go together to the doctor or clinic where here HBV infection is managed.??You can have a test for HBV antibody to check whether you are protected from your immunization; and the doctor can also advise the two of you about sexual transmission risks.??Most likely you need not use condoms and can be confident you'll never catch HBV.

I hope this has helped.??Best wishes--??HHH, MD

By CHILA NAMAIKO? ?

PRINCESS Anne of Great Britain has called on Members of Parliament (MPs) to continue showing exemplary commitment in the fight against corruption by drafting adequate and effective laws.

And Government chief whip, Yamfwa Mukanga has hailed Britain?s plans to help Zambia with about 59 million British Pounds annually until 2015 to help hasten her achievement to attain the Millennium Development Goals (MDGS).

Speaking in Lusaka yesterday at Parliament buildings when she addressed MPs, Princess Anne said Zambia had made considerable achievements in many sectors of the economy.

Princess Anne was impressed with the continued dedication exhibited by the Government and parliamentarians to fight corruption in areas such as reinstatement of the abuse of authority of office clause.

?May I congratulate you for the commitment to fighting corruption by reviewing the constitutional process which should happen on a regular basis,? Princess Anne said.

The Princess, who is the daughter of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom (UK), was on a four-day tour of duty in Zambia and was expected to leave the country today.

At Parliament, she was flanked by Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini. Among other dignitaries who attended the parliamentarians? meeting in the auditorium, was leader of Government business and Vice-President Guy Scott.

Princess Anne said Zambia was scoring considerable achievements in various sectors and that the country had potential to grow further because of fertile and abundant land coupled with rich natural resources.

She was happy with Zambia for the peaceful transfer of power from former MMD regime to newly elected Patriotic Front (PF) Government under the leadership of President Michael Sata.

Princess Anne hailed the country for its continued role played in peacekeeping missions and was happy with the solid and cordial bilateral relationship enjoyed between Zambia and the UK.

Oil company: S. Sudan to pump as soon as possible

JUBA, South Sudan (AP) ? The oil company Dar Petroleum said Friday it will begin oil production in South Sudan as soon as possible following a security deal signed with Sudan, though getting back to full production remains several months away.

Dar Petroleum President Sun Xiansheng promised investors and South Sudan's government that the company will eventually return production to an average of 180,000 barrels per day.

South Sudan in January shut down its oil production after accusing Sudan of stealing its crude.

When South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan last year, it inherited the majority of the region's oil. But South Sudan's oil must be pumped through pipes owned by Sudan, which said it had taken the south's oil in lieu of unpaid fees for the use of its export and processing facilities. When tensions increased, the south shut down its industry, costing both sides millions in lost revenue.

The two sides signed agreements Thursday after four days of talks between both countries' presidents. Those agreements paved the way for a resumption of southern oil production.

Last month, South Sudan Oil Minister Stephen Dhieu Dau said it could take between four and six months before the Upper Nile fields reach full production again. Dar Petroleum's general manager of exploration and production, Chen Huanlong, said that estimate is correct.

Huanlong said the company will need to "warm up the pipes" for one month. After that, Huanlong said they would "approach the production plateau" in three months. But Huanlong said this would happen only if the government contracts and orders were prepared as soon as possible.

Representatives of the Dar Petroleum consortium were jubilant on Friday, and said their meeting was in part a celebration following the eight-month shutdown.

Several speakers exhorted the gathered workers into chants for the consortium and for South Sudan. Baidzawi Chemat ? Dar Petroleum's general manager of finance and services ? said he "felt euphoria" when the deal was signed in Ethiopia.

"Dar Petroleum contributes 80 to 90 percent of government revenue. We are the national builders. We will change the nation," he said.

According to Baidzawi, if Dar Petroleum can deliver on its promised production target, it will mean around 65 million barrels each year worth around $5 billion for South Sudan.

Dar operates oil facilities in South Sudan's Upper Nile State, which account for around 80 percent of the country's oil production. Dar Petroleum is comprised of the Malaysian company Petronas, which owns 40 percent, and the Chinese National Petroleum Corporation, which owns 41 percent. The remaining shares are held by South Sudan's Nilepet and the China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation.

The Thursday agreement will allow South Sudan to export its oil through the Sudanese pipelines. South Sudan will pay $9.10 per barrel for oil produced in Upper Nile state and $11.00 for oil produced in Unity State.

The oil fields in the state are in a remote region, and Xiansheng says restarting production will not be easy.

"We don't have spare parts, we don't have diesel, our cars have broken down," he said.

South Sudan has not yet given an official order to resume oil production, but officials from the Ministry of Petroleum and Mining said the order is expected soon. The Ministry's director general of petroleum, Mohamed Lino, said the ministry began preparing for the resumption of production one month ago.
