Breast Cancer Drug Raises Risk of Heart Problems in Older Women ...

10th August 2011 ????? 0 Comments

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 10 (HealthDay News) ? The breast cancer drug Herceptin
increases the risk of heart problems in elderly patients, especially those
with a history of heart disease and/or diabetes, a new study says.

Researchers analyzed the medical records of 45 women, ages 70 to 92,
who were treated with Herceptin (trastuzumab) since 2005 and found that 12
(26.7 percent) of them developed heart problems caused by the drug.

That rate is slightly higher than what was noted in earlier clinical
trials of younger, healthier women.

In this new study, 33 percent of the women with a history of heart
disease developed either asymptomatic or symptomatic heart problems as a
result of taking Herceptin, compared with 9.1 percent of women without a
history of heart disease.

The researchers also found that about 33 percent of women with diabetes
developed heart problems, compared with 6 percent of diabetes-free
women.

When the women with heart problems stopped taking Herceptin, all but
one recovered fully and five were able to re-start treatment with the
drug.

The study appears in the journal Annals of Oncology.

?This is the first study specifically to assess trastuzumab-related
cardiac toxicity and the cardiovascular factors that are associated with
an increased risk in a selected population of elderly breast cancer
patients,? study author Dr. Cesar Serrano, who conducted the research
while working as a clinical fellow at the Department of Medical Oncology
Breast Cancer Centre at the Vall d?Hebron University Hospital in
Barcelona, Spain, said in a journal news release.

?Trastuzumab is generally well-tolerated and, although there are some
concerns about it causing heart problems, until now few risk factors have
been identified among patients in clinical trials, most of whom are
usually younger than 70 years and have good general health. Our study has
demonstrated a significantly increased incidence of cardiac events among
patients aged 70 and over with cardiovascular risk factors such as a
history of cardiac disease and diabetes,? said Serrano, who is now a
postdoctoral research fellow at Brigham and Women?s Hospital in
Boston.

Serrano said the findings suggest that elderly women with one or more
heart risk factors who are being treated with trastuzumab should be
referred to a cardiologist. He also recommended closer monitoring of such
patients for possible heart problems.

'The Hunger Games' Still Photos: Katniss, Peeta & Gale Pics Released (PHOTOS)

Another aperitif to satiate "The Hunger Games" fans has been served.

Lionsgate Films, in continuing with its slow service of details and revelations, has unveiled two new photo stills from their upcoming big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' hit book series. The new pair of stills offer the closest looks yet at Jennifer Lawrence, who plays main heroine Katniss, and Josh Hutcherson, who takes on the role of her ally and best friend, Peeta Mellark.

Earlier pictures revealed Liam Hemsworth as Gale, the other member of the deadly games triumvirate.

Set for a March, 2012 release date, the latest photo release is actually well timed. The most recent two young adult-focused literary sensations, "Harry Potter" and "The Twilight Saga," are ready, in many ways, to cede ground for the next big thing; "Potter" has already seen its final film hit theaters in record-breaking fashion, while the two halves of the "Twilight" finale, "Breaking Dawn" Parts 1 and 2 are set for release in November and next summer, respectively.

At Sunday night's "Teen Choice Awards," Potter's second to last film took home top honors, with the third "Twilight" installment coming in a close second in surfboard accumulation. By next summer, "Potter" will be on its last legs in terms of "Teen Choice Awards," and "Twilight" will be close to that point, as well; given their years of dominance, and the "Hunger Games" release date, it's feasible that their reigns could end in 2012, giving way to Lawrence and co.

The films look to track on the more impressive grounds of "Harry Potter" than the critically maligned path of "Twilight." Gary Ross is directing the star-studded pic, and Steven Soderbergh, two time Oscar-winner, is directing the second unit, a major, unexpected coup.

Expect a long promotional rollout; aside from the dramatic action sequences yet to be teased, there are plenty of characters that need their own revealing. That includes Elizabeth Banks as Katniss' guide Effie Trinket, Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, Donald Sutherland as President Snow and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy.

Here are all the photos released from "The Hunger Games" thus far; credit the first four to Lionsgate Pictures.

It turns out chimps do show selfless behavior

Chimpanzees, long considered reluctant to share, apparently can display selfless tendencies, revealing one more key way our closest living relatives are like humans, scientists find.

These findings could shed light on the evolution of altruism in humans, showing that selflessness is less of an anomaly among our relatives than before suggested, researchers added.

In recent years, research has revealed just how much chimpanzees have in common with us. They can hunt with spears, play with improvised dolls and mourn their dead.

However, past experiments had suggested that chimps were loath to share, being what scientists had classified as antisocially selfish instead of pro-socially altruistic. This led to a widely held belief that human altruism evolved only after humans split from their ape cousins about 6 million years ago.

"For the past decade we have lived through the curious situation ? frustrating for many chimpanzee fieldworkers and observers ? that chimps are well known for spontaneous acts of altruism, yet have not shown the same tendencies in well-controlled experiments," said researcher Frans de Waal, a primatologist at Emory University in Atlanta.

It turns out this past failure to find such altruistic behavior might have been due to the experiments on the chimpanzees themselves.

"Most earlier studies had presented the apes with a complex apparatus that helped them deliver food to themselves or others, often so complicated that the experiments tested tool skills rather than social tendencies," de Waal told LiveScience. "Ours is the first study that uses no such apparatus at all."

In addition to using complex food-delivery systems, past experiments often placed the chimpanzees so far apart that they might not have realized how their actions benefited others.

Simple tests of altruism
In these new, simplified experiments, two apes were housed next to each other with a screen through which they could see each other. Then, one chimpanzee had to choose between two differently colored tokens from a bin, one of which represented a pro-social option, the other a selfish option. The pro-social option would cause both chimpanzees to receive a piece of banana wrapped in paper. (The paper made a loud noise upon removal, helping chimps to know that another was benefiting from his actions.) The selfish option only rewarded the ape who made the choice.

In a study with seven adult female chimps placed into various pairs, the scientists found all the apes showed a definite preference for the pro-social option.

"For me, the most important finding is that like us, chimpanzees take into account the needs and wishes of others," researcher Victoria Horner, a comparative psychologist at Emory University, told LiveScience.

"The idea that chimps are indifferent to the welfare of others can now hopefully be put to rest," de Waal said.

The chimpanzees behaved especially altruistically toward partners who either patiently waited or gently reminded them that they were there by drawing attention to themselves. They were less likely to reward partners who exerted pressure by making a fuss, begging persistently or spitting water at them.

"This is interesting because there has been a long-standing view that the chimpanzees only share food under pressure," Horner said. "Our results suggest the opposite ? chimpanzees share when there is no to little pressure, but direct pressure or threats reduce sharing, possibly due to negative emotions."

Evolution of altruism
The researchers say these findings, along with studies showing other primate species with similar tendencies, suggest pro-sociality may have deeper evolutionary origins than previously thought.

Past research had shown that chimpanzees were capable of altruistically providing assistance. "Our results are subtly different," Horner said. "When you provide assistance, it's really a test between doing something or nothing. In our study, the chimps really have three choices ? they can do nothing, they can be pro-social or they can be selfish."

The current studies were conducted with chimpanzees of all one sex to simplify its design, as including both sexes would have added complex questions of why the chimps might or might not have shared.

"Many anecdotal reports of altruism in both the wild and captivity involve females, but that's not to say that males aren't also altruistic," Horner said. Also, "researchers may be unintentionally focusing more on female altruism because they expect to see it more in females than males."

In addition, "males may show their pro-social side in different contexts," she added. "For example, reports from the wild indicate that female chimpanzees use tools more frequently than males, but our previous research with captive chimpanzees has shown that males are just as good as females at tool use. It's just that males in the wild have other priorities, such as border patrols and hunting, so that we don't see their tool-using abilities as frequently as we do with females. The same may be true of male pro-sociality."

"Gender differences would be an interesting study for future research," Horner concluded.

Horner and de Waal detailed their findings online Aug. 8 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Find out how Cooch took $55,000 from the disgraced "U.S. Navy Veterans Association," in apparent exchange for his promise to get the Virginia Office of Consumer Affairs (which had "notified Thompson's group that it no longer qualified for an exemption from state registration requirements") off the group's back. Can we say "pay-to-play?" Find out more.

The following two endorsements really say it all in the 31st State Senate district.

1. David Englin endorses Jaime Areizaga-Soto:

As a progressive leader in the General Assembly, I generally do not endorse Democratic primary candidates in districts where I cannot vote, and I've been especially hesitant to comment on the 31st District Senate primary because my wife is a paid consultant for one of the candidates, Jaime Areizaga-Soto. However, my simmering anger at how my own party's leaders in the Virginia Senate are handling this race has boiled over, and I can no longer remain silent.

[...]

The most senior Democratic leaders in the Virginia Senate continue to attack and belittle Areizaga-Soto, who would be the first Latino elected to the Virginia Senate, because he has the nerve to seek his party's nomination against their hand-picked choice. They are so incensed by his candidacy that they have spent tens of thousands of dollars to attack him that could otherwise be used to defend their tenuous Democratic majority. This smacks of an earlier era of "good old boy" Virginia Democratic politics that most of us soundly rejected long ago...

This is all so, so true, and closely echoes everything we've been saying here on Blue Virginia for months. Progressive leader (other than our disagreement on taking gifts from corporate interests) David Englin's conclusion is also true, that Areizaga-Soto "will be a thoughtful, progressive champion for our entire community, and to send a message that the Democratic Party is still the open, inclusive party of good government we have worked so hard together to build." Bingo!

2. In stark, stark contrast, is the right-wing real estate rag's endorsement of real estate/towing industry favorite Barbara Favola. Keep in mind that this paper endorsed George Allen over Jim Webb in 2006, Bob McDonnell in 2009, etc. The right-wing real-estate rag also despises liberals, progressives, environmentalists (for instance, the paper's editor has written that global warming is nothing more than "hysteria perpetuated by those, including the media, with agendas to pursue"), activists, and Democrats in general. Most importantly, and this cannot be emphasized enough, the right-wing real estate rag is a supporter of the REPUBLICAN CANDIDATE IN THE 31ST DISTRICT, Caren Merrick. Can we say "concern troll?" In other words, if you follow this endorsement of the right-wing real estate rag, you're essentially going with someone who only wants to hurt Democrats, who hates everything we stand for, who is totally beholden (like the person he endorsed) to the real estate industry, and who wants the Republican candidate (Caren Merrick) to win this race!(I mean, it would be like if Blue Virginia started endorsing in Republican primaries - lol) All of which really makes it clear why the Sun Gazette endorsed who it did.

In sum, this one's a no brainer for Democrats in the 31st district: go Jaime Areizaga-Soto!

Real Estate Investment Planning Requires Personal Development ...

If there?s one thing I think many people can attest to, it is that plans often change. Throughout many of the online real estate forums, many people, including yours truly, have in one way or another, written down their plan of action! People do this to get other peoples reaction and approval. With any approval comes a sense of comfort and belonging. The problem is, most ?plans? that people write down or post in forums, are simply?well, not good. They lack depth, focus and reality. I can remember my first ?plan?. I posted it on a real estate forum. Then I proceeded to post about oh I?d say ten others before I realized how silly it was for me to do this. It was silly because I completely didn?t understand what I was talking about.

I would write things like, ?I?ll: (1) File for LLC (2) open bank account (3) create business cards (4) blah (5) blah (6) blah.?

People have all sorts of plans and ideas. Some of them can actually be really good. For instance, I read a recent posting where someone talked about how they planned to purchase foreclosures. They mentioned many factors that were impacting their decisions, demonstrated understanding of the risks involved, and had an actual step-by-step breakdown of the process, numbers, requirements, laws and time frames. They had identified a specific market with a specific investment strategy with contingencies for possible problems.

A further intriguing idea regarding this subject matter. The noob usually tries very hard to convince others he or she?s getting better at the understanding of rei. It is that need for approval and also comfort. Having a plan written down, gives direction. It lays out a path to follow. But a plan without specificity is just pure fluff. It doesn?t drive an overall strategem for success. A plan without specificity, which requires knowledge of the subject, is just a gathering of words on a computer screen or on a scribbled-on piece of paper. So, how do you write an effective and useful real estate plan?

The great misallocation ? larger hedge funds aren?t safer than emerging managers ? YouTube: In Part two of Opalesque.TV?s interview with Deepak Gurnani, Head of Hedge Funds at Investcorp, Deepak describes the great misallocation: the wave of instituti?

First you have to build your understanding of numbers and finances. For me personally, I started by doing my own personal financials. I looked at several different Balance Sheets online and Income and Expense sheets. I then looked up what everything meant on the forms and made up my own simplified version [click here]. All I did then, was gathered all of my financial data. Most of my financial data revolves around debt and like most poor people, I?ve bad debt: car loan & student loan (no credit card debt for me though!). I took my bank statements, looked at all my bills and grabbed my last pay stub. I then called my lenders and got the exact amount owed on my loans (as well as daily interest accrual ? for my debt elimination plan) and I proceeded to fill out my financials. I wrote down my earnings, matched them to my debts and realized I had a negative net worth of -$38,238.91 (on a good note, my net worth is now positive, thanks to rei, of 8,923.26).

You may be saying to yourself, ?okay, what?s this got to do with a real estate plan?? The point is, you must have an understanding of finances and more importantly, you must understand where you stand, financially! If you do not, you will be continuing down a road without direction. Doing my own personal financial statements, gives me a sense of discipline and information I need to combat my old self, the schlub, who accumulated debt and thought nothing of it. That being said, any financial statement I do won?t be 100% correct, as my accountant knows more about it then I do, but at least, I?ve a working knowledge of my financial standing on a monthly basis. And when I can afford it, I?ll have both professionally-audited personal and business financials done on a quarterly basis by my CPA. For now though, I?ve ground to stand on. Seeing this mess called my personal financials, lets me know how far I?ve to go.

Finally, my personal financials also let me kFinally how well I am doing in terms of paying off my liabilities (debts). Since I began this five months ago, I?ve decreased my fixed liabilities 1787.44. Now that may not seem like much, but compared to my previous way of life ? they would have decreased 924 dollars approximately, because I was not paying any attention to my finances. When I realized that the company that owns my student loan note, makes 6.73 a day in interest (as of June,2006), I felt sick. I felt stupid. I thought to myself, ?I?m smarter than this. I can do so much better than this.? Now I?m.

While learning about personal finances, the next thing to focus on is credit. The great thing about real estate investing or rei, is that there are so many different avenues you can pursue. Many people focus on their personal credit and then using it to borrow money. There?s no question that the advantage to rei is leverage. In spite of this, if you want to invest in real estate, it?s also wise to focus on building business credit as well. Why? Because I said so that is why! Wow, I am having flashbacks.

Anyway, as I was saying, a combination of building personal credit as well as business credit are important because as a serious real estate investor, you want to maximize your Return On Investment or ROI, while at the same time minimizing your personal liabilities. If little Johnie falls on the front lawn at one of your properties, big Johnie Sr. Will sue you. Finally, if you own your properties in your own name, then whatever you own, personally, is at risk. Nevertheless, if you?re a member of an LLC or Corporation, well then the business is liable for damages, not you. Now this is not as cut and dry as it appears, and of course, seeking professional legal advise is paramount, but the bottom line is, if title to your investments are in the name of an LLC or Corp, you technically don?t own them, the company does. Think of Bill Gates. He doesn?t own Windows XP, Microsoft Corp. Does. Just as the government tried to sue Microsoft Corp., not Bill Gates. Of course, there?s a big difference between Microsoft Corp. And Joe?s REI LLC; try a team of about fifty lawyers, but that extra layer of protection between you and your investments, shouldn?t be overlooked.

Lastly, getting back to personal and business credit ? it?s important to build both. Basically, you build credit by paying creditors on time. The same works for a business. You should have one personal credit card and one business credit card. Use them wisely and pay them off monthly. Contact any outstanding credit lines that have been destroying your credit and rectify matters with them, by setting up an action plan to begin paying them off. I?m by no means an expert in this field, but it is really simple logic. If you owe money, pay it off. Ultimately, I must say this. I?m no proponent of debt accumulation. That is all credit?s. It?s evidence that a person or business has or has not been responsible in paying their debts. Our society has become debt-based. Debt is advertised as something that?s ?good?. Well, I?m here to say that it?s not ?good?. Debt is complex and must be managed appropriately. Many large corporations take on debt to finance growth. Never the less, a large corporation has complex business financials, that let a lender know, how well?or poor, a business is performing. The lender or vendor, can then make a judgement of whether or not to extend credit lines, mortgages, etc based on analysis of financial statements. There?s that phrase again!

For the noob, it is important to understand the relationship between your monthly cash flow and your available credit. What will most likely happen is, you?ll start doing your financial statements. The first few are rough, because you are unsure if you are doing it right. Just barrel through it. I?ll be offering a very basic look at ?doing? financial statements in the near future. Next, you?ll review your personal credit. Work on getting it to a somewhat satisfactory position if it?s not already. Get a copy of your credit report.

Ultimately, given what I?ve covered thus far, it?s vital to the noob, to understand the importance of having a sound kUltimatelyledge base for real estate investment/business. It?s my firm belief, that the above is the absolute basic beginnings for a real esate plan. So many people have different backgrounds and some would say ?just go out, learn a little about rei, and start buying.? That may work for them. It may have paid off big time for them. To me, that means very little. The purpose of this article is to give you the basic and most generic ideas for beginning a serious path towards rei/business success. There really is so much to cover and I could write two seperate articles Part I & II on business entities alone. Understanding credit and your personal finances are absolutely essential in order to actually develop any kind of investment strategy. There is a strong relationship between these two, in peoples personal lives as well as in business or rei. The one key element to recognize when considering real estate investing, that many people overlook is how different a successful business conducts its initial start up. A successful business doesn?t become over-extended on debt financing, before it even has its first customer or contract. It grows by managing both cash flow and credit. In rei, usually, it?s the other way around ? many use debt financing, whether through a seller note, personal loans or conventional, to create a cash flowing situation [i.e. Rental or rehab], which makes rei different from a traditional business. This is an important point that must be factored into developing your real estate plan. For now, start with your financial positioning and credit, no matter how bad or good.
