King crabs threaten seafloor life near Antarctica

ScienceDaily (Sep. 8, 2011) ? King crabs and other crushing predators are thought to have been absent from cold Antarctic shelf waters for millions of years. Scientists speculate that the long absence of crushing predators has allowed the evolution of a unique Antarctic seafloor fauna with little resistance to predatory crabs. A recent study by researchers from the University of Hawaii, Duke University, Ghent University, Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, and Hamilton College, indicates that one species of king crab has moved 120 km across the continental shelf in West Antarctica and established a large, reproductive population in the Palmer Deep along the west Antarctic Peninsula.

"This is a very interesting discovery for several reasons," said Craig Smith, Professor of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii -- Manoa. "First, it provides evidence that king crabs can now disperse across the Antarctic shelf, and reproduce in at least some Antarctic shelf waters. It also suggests that these predatory king crabs will cause a major reduction on seafloor biodiversity as they invade Antarctic habitats because they appear to be eating all the echinoderms in the Palmer Deep."

The researchers used a remotely operated vehicle (or ROV) to explore the seafloor around Antarctic, and to evaluate the abundance and foraging behavior of king crabs in the Palmer Deep. They found that the king crab, a species known as Neolithodes yaldwyni, is acting as a major "ecosystem engineer," digging in soft sediments, preying on seafloor animals and altering basic habitat structure at the ocean bottom. Echinoderms, such as sea lilies, brittle stars, asteroids and sea urchin, which generally are common and diverse in Antarctic waters, were wholly absent in the crab zone in Palmer Deep.

The crab population in Palmer Deep was also both reproducing and surprisingly large; the researchers estimate that more than 1 million crabs live in the area of 146 km2 in water deeper than 950 m in Palmer. Smith and co-workers also found that the Palmer Deep and Antarctic shelf waters are warming rapidly enough that the king crabs may be able to colonize the vast west Antarctic Peninsula shelf at depths of 400-600 within 1-2 decades; such colonization could have devastating ecological effects for the major components of the unique Antarctic fauna.

In the future, Smith and colleagues hope to conduct population genetic studies of the Palmer Deep king crab to reconstruct it colonization history, and to see whether this population is connected to populations of the same species in deep-water on the other side of Antarctica. These studies could help to predict how king crabs may disperse and colonize new habitats in Antarctic waters in the coming decades.

HBT: Josh Johnson blames 'tall man syndrome'

After months of false starts and setbacks Josh Johnson was finally shut down for the season a few days ago, meaning he ended up missing the final 120 games of the year with a shoulder injury that is still described as merely ?inflammation.?

Johnson has a long history of arm problems, limiting one of the most dominant starters in baseball to an average of just 119 innings per season since his brilliant debut in 2006.

And yesterday the 27-year-old Marlins ace told Clark Spencer of the Miami Herald that ?tall man?s syndrome? may be to blame for all the injuries:

It?s a matter of posture and a bunch of stuff that just kind of led up to it. Years and years of being tall, you?re always slouching down and bending over. You?re shoulder?s not in a good place. You start leaning over when you?re throwing. It snowballs.

Johnson apparently got that theory from a therapist and Spencer reports that the 6-foot-7 right-hander is ?now paying close attention to his posture, standing straighter to relieve pressure on his scapula and wearing a customized shirt that helps keep his shoulders back.?

My initial reaction is to note that plenty of short pitchers have similarly lengthy injury histories and plenty of tall pitchers are injury free, but at this point Johnson and the Marlins are probably pretty open to ideas about how to keep him off the disabled list.

Remote oasis saw Gaddafi family, but briefly (Reuters)

DJANET, Algeria (Reuters) ? She came with her mother and brothers, fleeing across the Sahara from the wrath of her father's nation. Reaching a remote oasis, she gave birth to a daughter and was gone again, deep into the desert in a caravan of luxury vehicles.

So goes the story of Aisha Gaddafi as told by Algerians living in the oasis town of Djanet, 1,500 km (900 miles) inland from Algiers. They said they saw little of the ousted Libyan leader's family during their two-day stay last week, but would welcome other supporters of Gaddafi who arrived as refugees.

Like their prime minister, who said on Sunday that Algeria took pride in welcoming such "humanitarian cases," locals in Djanet, 60 km (40 miles) from the Libyan frontier post of Ghat, said traditions of hospitality among desert nomads meant the fugitive women and their accompanying menfolk were sure of a welcome, whatever crimes Muammar Gaddafi himself is wanted for.

"She was well treated and received all the medical care she needed in the hospital," said shopkeeper Sahraoui Safi, one of several of the town's few thousand residents to recount fleeting glimpses of the Libyan convoy, with some dozen family members aboard, moving between the hospital and a tightly-guarded villa.

A man named Mohand, who runs a coffee shop near the clinic, said he saw a convoy of Libyan cars heading to the hospital on Monday: "I think Algeria has done the right thing, offering help and support to a refugee," he said. "She is a refugee."

Algerian officials said Gaddafi's second wife Safia, along with her daughter Aisha and son Hannibal, as well as Mohammed, a son of Gaddafi by his first wife, crossed the border on Monday, August 29.

That Aisha, an international lawyer in her mid-30s, was about to give birth was a critical factor in letting them in.

The child, a girl, was born almost immediately, in the early hours of Tuesday, at the Efiri clinic, a simple medical facility on the outskirts of Djanet. Aisha and her new baby spent a second night in the town, at a secluded house, but then left.

A source in Algeria who was aware of arrangements for the Gaddafis but was not authorised to discuss them, told Reuters the family was now staying discreetly in the empty southeast of the country, probably in Illizi province, a territory the size of Italy with a population of only 50,000.

"Aisha is still in the area," the source said. "I believe she is in Illizi province."

DESERT OUTPOST

The family will not find in the desert the sort of luxury lifestyle that has been revealed in the past fortnight in their abandoned homes in Tripoli.

Djanet has little to tempt the traveler. With midday summer temperatures hitting 50 degrees Celsius (120 Fahrenheit) in the shade, dusty chairs and tables stand in nearly empty cafes.

Historically a watering stop for camel trains crossing Africa's great desert, it is now a scattering of flat-roofed brown houses among palm groves that creep up the boulder-strewn slopes of a low hill on which French colonial legionnaires built a small strongpoint, Fort Charlet, a century ago.

While there was no shortage of friction between Algiers and Tripoli during the four-decades of Gaddafi's rule -- including a dispute over the border near Djanet -- the two countries share a post-colonial suspicion of Western power which fostered a certain solidarity between Gaddafi and Algeria's ruling elite.

"Libya, a brother nation, is a nation with an ancestral history, a neighbouring people with whom we share a glorious past and a radiant future," Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia said in defending giving shelter to the Gaddafis -- a move Libya's new rulers called an act of aggression.

The government has ruled out taking in Gaddafi himself.

Gaddafi's whereabouts are not known, but one of his remaining bastions of support in Libya is Sabha, a 500 km (300 mile) drive across the desert from Djanet. Algerian officials said Gaddafi called them and said he was in Ghadames, close to the border further north.

Hundreds of Libyans from Sabha and as from as far away as Tripoli have come to Djanet and other villages in Illizi, residents said, adding that many were supporters of Gaddafi.

They are keeping a low profile. When a Reuters reporter approached a group of people residents identified as visitors from Libya, they declined to speak.

Algerians say they are trying to accommodate the incomers as best they can, despite their own limited means.

The shopkeeper, Safi, said he had hosted a man he described as a cousin of Gaddafi in his home and sympathised with the plight of those fleeing their homeland.

"Some Libyans have lost everything overnight, it is a tragedy for most of them," he said. "They never thought they would one day be refugees."

Algeria has now closed the southern part of its border with Libya, according to a security source at the Debdeb crossing, near Ghadames.

The source said hundreds of Libyans entered Algeria in the days before the anti-Gaddafi National Transitional Council put up its red, green and black flag on the Libyan frontier post.

"Now that the NTC controls the border, it is difficult for Gaddafi and his aides to get to Algeria," the source said.

Algeria is the only one of Libya's North African neighbours yet to recognize the NTC as Libya's new authorities. It says it will do so once there is a representative government.

Algerian officials say they are particularly concerned that Islamist militants have infiltrated the NTC and that al Qaeda's North African wing will exploit the chaos in Libya to acquire weapons and explosives.

However, many Algerians have criticised the government for failing to embrace the anti-Gaddafi movement in Libya. Algerians have followed the conflict closely, and many share the view of others in the Arab world that Gaddafi was a despot.

Italy: Purging Libya ex-officials would be mistake

(AP) ? The West must not repeat the same mistake in Libya as it did in Iraq, Italy's foreign minister said Sunday, warning against a full-scale purging of military officials and bureaucrats from Moammar Gadhafi's authoritarian regime.

"Why destroy all the structure, all the apparatus in Libya like we have done in Iraq, making a big mistake," Franco Frattini told reporters at an economics forum in the Lake Como resort town of Cernobbio. "We shouldn't multiply, we shouldn't double this mistake."

Frattini, whose country kept strong economic and diplomatic ties with Gadhafi's regime, suggested that lessons be learned from the period in Iraq after the U.S.-led war drove Saddam Hussein from power. He was referring to the wide-scale purging of Iraqi soldiers and bureaucrats. Militant extremists quickly capitalized on the resulting discontent and power vacuum.

But Frattini also warned against possible infiltration by extremists in the future government of Libya, after rebels, aided by NATO's airstrikes, ended Gadhafi's 42 years of iron-fisted rule.

"A very important point is to eradicate any kind of infiltration of extremist organizations into the structure of government of the future Libya," said the minister, who throughout the rebellion consulted frequently with the Benghazi-based National Transitional Council.

The council's leadership was also in regular contact early on with officials of Italian energy company Eni SpA, which for decades has had natural gas and oil operations in Libya, Frattini said.

"The rebels in Benghazi immediately understood that Eni would have been a reliable partner" in a post-Gadhafi Libya, Frattini said.

Members of an Eni technical team in Libya are "exploring the fastest way to restore ... the oil and gas production" there," Frattini added.

Eni said last week it is too soon to say when oil production could resume from Libya, but its CEO Paolo Scaroni has set a target date of mid-October for natural gas delivery from its Greenstream pipeline operation, in time for winter use by Italian consumers. Libya is one of Italy's main sources of energy.

These loans could help you get rid of the bad credit and establish your credit record again. Usually interest rates are higher for such loans as lenders consider you a higher credit risk. If you avail this loan, make sure to pay your monthly installments on time and do not lapse on your payments. Try and make the most of this second opportunity to improve your credit score.

You have to ensure that you never miss a payment when you?re trying to re-establish. Missing one small payment by as little as two weeks will set you back for months. If you?re one of those people that have a tough time remembering to make payments (there are many like you), remember that you also have an option through which the payment can be automatically taken out of your account. Many banks will even print and mail payment checks for a nominal fee. But no matter what, try your best to Not Miss Any Payments.

Another very important aspect of reinstating your credit is not to let anything go to collection. Occasionally when you come out fresh from bankruptcy your natural tendency is to ignore collection notices you receive because many times they are for debts that were included in your bankruptcy. But, just on the safe side takes a moment and makes sure the collection notices apply to debt that was included ? if the debt was included notify the collection agent so they don?t by mistake file a collection against you and damage your credit re-establishment process.

If one of your old creditors makes a mistake and files a false collection, your credit will be injured until you can get it corrected. If you do end up with a collection on your credit that was filed after your bankruptcy you have to take proper actions before you can restore your credit. A car loans after a bankruptcy is an effective tool to restore back your credit score. In detail, once bankruptcy is closes, you can always apply for a new or used car loan the very next day.

Thames leaves game because of dizziness

updated 2:53 p.m. ET Sept. 3, 2011

NEW YORK - Toronto Blue Jays left fielder Eric Thames has left their game against the New York Yankees because of dizziness after striking out in the first inning.

Blue Jays shortstop Yunel Escobar did not go out to the field in the fifth inning Saturday because of a jammed left wrist. Escobar grounded out to second in the top half of the inning.

Batting second Saturday, Thames struck out looking and never went out to take his position for the bottom half of the first. Dewayne Wise took over in left field.

Thames had two of Toronto's four hits in a 3-2 loss to New York on Friday night.

When Escobar left, Mike McCoy moved from center field to shortstop, Wise switched to center and Mark Teahen entered in left field.

If Singaporeans are repulsed by Jack Neo's tomfoolery, is it not time ...

If we are repulsed by a man's advances on the opposite sex in Singapore, I believe this is the Age of Aquaries and a time of enlightenment to promote gay and lesbian lifestyle which promotes true love and avoid such unnecessary unhappiness between gender.

This way, the men can be men with their men and the women can be women with their women.

And they don't have to understand each other nor try to forgive each other or try to read each other's mind.

All the way Jack of all trades, Master of none.

another interesting question by Steve. nope we are not repulsed that men are interested in women. in jack's case, we are his paying fans. and his mistresses were plucked from his own company. and given roles in the films we pay to support local talent. really nothing wrong in men chasing women per se if they treat them right. in your earlier question, have you got enough men to support your idea? can you write in to Straits Times forum? all the girls in Singapore sure want your name and contact. for your info, don't be envious of malay men. malay men treat their wives with respect though they might have more than one. you want to be like a king and have hundreds of wives? you not scared that you lose all your money and sanity? if you want a law to help you save money on sex like jack neo has a way to lower his budget costs, give up all realistic hope. what other questions do you have? do you have a grudge against your mother? and better pray that in your next life you are not born a woman. it will definitely be a time of enlightenment.
