Nest 2.0: The Smart Thermostat Is Thinner, Works With More Home Heating Systems Than Before [Nest]

Nest was not the first smart thermostat to reach the hands of consumers. But it was the first that made our parents (and maybe even some of our grandparents) raise an eyebrow. Its cylindrical form and simple GUI are nothing, if not inviting to use, and its ability to learn from your usage habits not only offers convenience, but possible savings when it comes to the power bill. Now with the second generation iteration of Nest—one that is slimmer and guaranteed to work with 95% of home heating systems—the product wants to go from being a buzzy new product to a mainstream, must-have home gadget. 70-year-old Oregon farmer eaten by his hogs

By Isolde Raftery, NBC News

On Wednesday morning, Terry V. Garner, a 70-year-old Oregon farmer, went to feed his animals. Several hours later, when he hadn?t returned, a family member went to look for him and found, on the ground of the hog enclosure, his dentures. ?

Further investigation of the enclosure revealed that the hogs, which each weighed about 700 pounds, had nearly completely eaten the farmer, although some body parts were strewn about the enclosure.

Now the Coos County Sheriff?s Office is investigating how Garner ?ended up in a position where the hogs were able to consume him.? According to the Sheriff's statement:

There are several scenarios being investigated, including that Mr. Garner had a health event, such as a heart attack, which then put him in a position where the hogs could consume him. Another scenario being investigated is that given the age and health of Mr. Garner, that one or more of the hogs knocked Mr. Garner to the ground, whereupon that hogs killed and consumed him. In addition, due to the unusual circumstances presented

The statement added that at least one of the hogs had previously been aggressive toward the farmer but did not specify how many hogs live on the farm.

Garner?s remains were examined on Saturday by a pathologist who was unable to determine how the man died. A forensic anthropologist at the University of Oregon will also examine his remains.

Answering the phone at Garner?s home Monday, a man who described himself as a family friend described the tragedy succinctly: ?What a way.?

This isn?t the first time hogs have eaten their farmers.

In 2004, a Romanian woman was knocked unconscious and eaten by the pigs on her farm, UPI reported at the time. The news report did not say whether the woman survived, only that the pigs had eaten the woman's ears and half her face.

Her husband, sedated, told reporters: "I'll never breed such beasts again."

Madeleine M. Kunin: Pushing Forward With Paid Leave, Workplace ...

"Five of us were meeting for lunch and reminiscing about the women's movement. 'I was never one of those angry women,' one said. 'I'm still angry,' I blurted. My reaction surprised both me and my friends. Where did that come from? A source I hadn't tapped before. Upon reflection, I realized that I'm not angry enough to carry a placard down hot macadam streets in front of the nation's Capitol like I did in my thirties when I marched for women's rights. But now in my seventies, I'm still dissatisfied with the status quo... Why the anger, what did I expect?

"I expected that by the year 2012, grandmothers like myself would be able to tell their grandchildren how life used to be 'long ago' when families used to have to figure out for themselves how to be both wage earners and care givers." -- Excerpt from The New Feminist Agenda, Defining the Next Revolution for Women, Work and Family, Madeleine M. Kunin, Chelsea Green Publishing.pp 1-2.

When I held a conference on onsite childcare in the workplace during my first term as Governor of Vermont in 1986, I expected that most employers would recognize that this was a great idea, both for their workers and their bottom line. When I established a grant program for early childhood education, I expected there would surely be a national program by now.

And when the unpaid Family and Medical Leave Act was signed by President Bill Clinton on Feb. 5, 1993, I expected that paid family and medical leave would soon come about.

None of that happened. The need for sensible family/work policies is greater today than ever, as more middle class families are struggling with work/life balance, and with balancing their household budgets.

Working moms, and increasingly working dads don't want a government handout, but they do need a hand up.

What is at the top of the list? The moms I have spoken with put workplace flexibility at the top of the list. Some family-friendly employers provide workplace flexibility, enabling employees to work at home or work shorter weeks or days.

But flexibility depends largely on what kind of a boss you have. In England and Australia, there is a law called "the right to request flexibility" which applies to everyone. An employee can request flexibility but it is not automatically granted. Both parties have to negotiate a solution, and if none is found, it is settled by a tribunal. Employers have found that the law works for them because it allows them to retain good workers.

Paid family and medical leave is next on the list. Present law, while helpful, is not the answer for a new mother who is forced to either go back to work right after birth, or take the leave, and give up her paycheck for six weeks. Most families simply can't afford to do that. It's hard to believe, but only three countries in the world do not have some form of paid maternity leave: Papua New Guinea, Swaziland and the United States of America.

The same story applies to paid sick days. Connecticut recently passed a limited paid sick days law for service workers in large companies. The winning slogan stated by the governor was, "I don't want someone to sneeze in my salad." Paid sick days are both a family/work issue and a public health concern.

Child care is on every young family's list -- where to find quality care and how to pay for it. Again, most of the globe is ahead of us. It is high time for a national child care and early education policy, paid for on a sliding scale, to enable all children to get off to a good start. As a result of neuroscience studies we know that those early years are critical to a child's development. We also know that high quality childcare can help break the cycle of poverty.

One consequence of our lack of these policies is that the United States has the highest child poverty rate of any developed country -- about 22 percent. The price we will pay for neglecting of the needs of these children will far outpace the cost of investing in their future.

Why has change been so molasses slow? The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other big business interests have fought vigorously against these policies, but regardless of their opposition, two states now have paid leave laws -- California and New Jersey. It can be done. Several states are providing early childhood education and all day kindergarten -- despite tight budgets -- because they know that this is the best place to put their scarce dollars.

How can we speed up the process of putting workplace flexibility, paid family and medical leave, childcare and early childhood education on the agenda of both political parties? We have to amplify our voices and make our demands clear. A useful strategy is to form new and powerful coalitions. Policies that are good for families with young children are also good for the elderly the disabled -- and for that potentially enormous constituency -- men.

These policies are no longer just "women's issues." They are working family issues -- which means most of America.

We also have to play catch-up in electing more women to public office. Female membership in the Congress is 17 percent, which places us in 69th place among 168 countries. Yes, many men will support these issues, but women have the benefit of having experienced the struggles to raise their children while earning a paycheck. They have to have a seat at the table where their stories can be told.

In this election season, the most immediate step for women to take is to exercise the right to vote. Neither party has gone far enough in addressing these needs, but there is a clear distinction between the two, as reflected in the Paul Ryan budget. Instead of expanding programs like Head Start child care block grants and food stamps, they are cutting back.

Both parties are courting women's votes. Why? Because they know that women are very likely to determine the outcome of this election. That outcome will influence whether we move forward on family/work policies, or are pushed back.

Falcons go to 4-0 with 30-28 win over Panthers

ATLANTA (AP) ? The Atlanta Falcons never trailed in their first three games.

Now they know they can play from behind, too.

Rallying in the final minute from their 1-yard line, the unbeaten Falcons scrambled into position for Matt Bryant's 40-yard field goal with 5 seconds remaining and pulled out a 30-28 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Atlanta (4-0) is off to its best start since 2004, when the Falcons reached the NFC championship game.

This team has even higher goals.

"We're not good enough to play every game from ahead," coach Mike Smith said. "This showed the mettle of the guys in that locker room. They showed a lot of resiliency."

No one was more resilient than Matt Ryan. Shaking off a career-high seven sacks, the Falcons' quarterback dropped back into his own end zone and threw up a pass that Roddy White snatched away between two defenders for a 59-yard gain. After a pass interference and a couple of short completions, Bryant won it with a kick right down the middle.

"We're right where we need to be in terms of our record," said Ryan, who threw for 369 yards and three touchdowns despite taking an awful beating. "In terms of our play, we've got a lot of improving to do."

After squandering a 24-14 lead in the second half, the Falcons needed a crucial fumble by Cam Newton to even have a chance ? and they still faced long odds when the Panthers downed a punt at the Atlanta 1 with 1:09 remaining.

Ryan had no timeouts and surely some doubt about how much time his beleaguered offensive line would give him. But he dropped back about as far as he could, threw it about as far as he could, and relied on White to go up and make the catch.

He did, the biggest catch of all on a day when he had eight for 169 yards.

"Matt told me he was going to throw it up there. Just make a play," said White, who also had a pair of touchdowns. "Not for one second did we think we were going to lose the game."

Newton threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score. But he let the ball slip away when it looked as though he had clinched the victory for the Panthers (1-3).

"You have to protect the football," Newton said. "That was a key focus going into this game, and I fumbled. There's a lot of guys that are trusting the ballcarrier, and I was the ballcarrier that particular play to get the job done. And I dropped the ball."

On third-and-2 at the Atlanta 46, Newton took the snap and bulled his way over the left side, his body surging across the spot needed for the first down. On the sideline, several of the Panthers broke into a celebration.

But John Abraham knocked it loose, the ball squirting backward. Fullback Mike Tolbert covered it for Carolina at the 45 ? 1 yard shy of a first down. After attempting unsuccessfully to draw the Falcons offside, the Panthers punted it away.

The Falcons took advantage.

Once they got Bryant in position, it was over.

The 37-year-old kicker made all three of his attempts against the Panthers, improving to 9 for 9 on the season. Since joining the Falcons during the 2009 season, he has missed only eight of 79 tries.

"Clutch," is how Ryan described him.

Charles Johnson spent so much time in the Atlanta backfield, he should've worn a Falcons jersey. He was credited with 3? sacks and hit Ryan five other times after he got the ball away.

If only Johnson could've gotten to him one more time ? on that long pass to White.

"I just heard the crowd, and when I got up I was kind of in disbelief," Johnson said. "I couldn't believe what had happened. You know they were going to go deep, but that's one of the plays that we're going to have to learn from. I think it's either going to make us or it's going to break us. We'll see down the road."

Newton's fumble ruined what had been a stellar performance. He threw for 215 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown to Greg Olsen early in the game, then a 36-yard scoring play to Kealoha Pilares that put the Panthers ahead 28-24 with 7:55 remaining.

Newton also ran for 86 yards on nine carries, bulling his way into the end zone from 4 yards out late in the third quarter.

The Panthers played much better than they did in their last outing, a 36-7 home loss to the New York Giants, but it wasn't enough to prevent them from sliding a daunting three games behind Atlanta in the NFC South.

"I want to apologize to my teammates and the fans that were watching out there," Newton said. "Everybody was doing their job. I clearly had the first down, but I've just got to hold onto the football."

NOTES: Michael Turner scored on a 60-yard screen pass, the first touchdown reception of his nine-year career. ... Carolina S Haruki Nakamura had an early interception, but it was largely a day to forget. He was beaten on both of White's touchdown receptions, missed a tackle on Turner's scoring play and had the ball snatched away by White on the long pass that set up the winning field goal. ... The Falcons travel to Washington next Sunday, while Carolina hosts Seattle.

Mitt Romney's California Garbage Man On The 47 Percent: 'We're Kind Of Like The Invisible People'

The labor union AFSCME is out with a new video featuring Richard Hayes, the man who picks up Mitt Romney's trash at his ocean-front mansion in La Jolla, Calif.

In the spot, Hayes talks about how hard he works in his job each day and criticizes Romney's comments about the 47 percent:

My name is Richard Hayes, and I pick up Mitt Romney's trash. We're kind of like the invisible people. He doesn't realize that the service we provide -- if it wasn't for us, it would be a big health issue, us not picking up trash.

Residents do come out and shake our hands. Sometimes they give us hugs and thank us for the job we're doing, hand us water and Gatorades. Tell us we're doing a good job and keep up the good work. Picking up 15, 16 tons by hand, that takes a toll on your body. When I'm 55, 60 years old, I know my body's gonna be break down [sic]. Mitt Romney doesn't care about that.

According to Politico's Morning Score, the Hayes video is the first in a series of interviews with workers intended to be "part campaign attack, part online testimonial, part survey tool and part recruiting tool."

Romney's campaign did not return a request for comment.

Goldman Sachs shares could rally 25 percent: Barron's

A nation inured to wanton murder was nevertheless shocked by this one: In November 2010, a group of four young men milling about as a party ended attacked another teen, randomly picking him as the victim of their vicious assault. Bobby Tillman, 18, did nothing to provoke his assailants to knock him to the ground and kick and stomp him to death. The crime occurred outside a suburban Atlanta home after parents called a halt to a teen party that had gotten out of control. This was no beating by members of a rival gang, no attack set off by longstanding grudges or old misunderstandings. ...

Eli Roth arrives on the VIP blood red carpet for his Goretorium on the Strip on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012.

By Don Chareunsy

Las Vegas VIPs and celebrities got into the Halloween spirit early as they attended the VIP and blood red carpet grand opening of director Eli Roth?s year-round scare fest Goretorium on Thursday night on the Strip. The evening kicked off with the ?Hostel? and ?Cabin Fever? director performing a chainsaw-cutting ceremony on the mezzanine level of Goretorium and then arrived on the actual black arrivals carpet with bloodied white carnations.

Black carpet guests included Dave Navarro (Guns ?n? Roses), Monte Carlo headliners the Jabbawockeez, Corey Miller (?L.A. Ink?), Zak Bagans (?Ghost Adventures?), Victoria Asher (Cobra Starship), DJ Paul (Three 6 Mafia), Omar Doom (?Inglorious Basterds?), DJ Ashba (Guns ?n? Roses), Antonio Bellatore (?The Antonio Bellatore Project?), 2012 Miss Nevada USA Jade Kelsall, 2005 Miss USA Shanna Moakler, boxer Zab Judah and actress Elina Madison.

After the arrivals carpet, Roth (b)led guests to the 1960s-inspired Baby Dolls lounge overlooking the Strip to watch a special moment featuring world-renowned illusionist Franz Harary. Roth entered a vintage ?exercise machine? and twisted his upper body 360 degrees while his legs stayed in one place. Guests gasped when he began coughing up blood while ?guts? were thrown into the crowd. The contraption sucked a guest inside the contraption while Roth exited back to normal. All in fun, people!

Eli Roth's Goretorium grand opening - from YouTube.com

As Goretorium characters partied in Baby Dolls, guests were treated to a specialty cocktail, Eli Roth?s Blood, as they listened to a mash-up of Top 40 songs. The 15,000-square-foot, $10 million Goretorium, located across from the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, with spine-tingling special effects, state-of-the-art scenery and a cast of nightmare-inducing characters opened to the public at 11 p.m.
