Man charged in Sony hacking case

(AP) ? Federal agents say they have arrested a man accused of hacking into the computers of Sony Pictures Entertainment.

FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller says 23-year-old Cody Kretsinger, an Arizona resident, was arrested Thursday and was expected to make a court appearance later in the day in Phoenix.

An indictment unsealed Thursday in Los Angeles charges Kretsinger with one count each of conspiracy and unauthorized impairment of a protected computer.

Sony Pictures computers were compromised earlier this year by a group known as Lulz Security, whose members anonymously claimed responsibility.

The film company has said more than 37,000 users had personally identifiable information stolen.

Authorities say Kretsinger is believed to be a current or former member of LulzSec, which has been linked to other hacking scandals.

NASA to demonstrate communications via laser beam

Friday, September 23, 2011

It currently takes 90 minutes to transmit high-resolution images from Mars, but NASA would like to dramatically reduce that time to just minutes. A new optical communications system that NASA plans to demonstrate in 2016 will lead the way and even allow the streaming of high-definition video from distances beyond the Moon.

This dramatically enhanced transmission speed will be demonstrated by the Laser Communications Relay Demonstration (LCRD), one of three projects selected by NASA's Office of the Chief Technologist (OCT) for a trial run. To be developed by a team led by engineers at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., LCRD is expected to fly as a hosted payload on a commercial communications satellite developed by Space Systems/Loral, of Palo Alto, Calif.

"We want to take NASA's communications capabilities to the next level," said LCRD Principal Investigator Dave Israel, who is leading a multi-organizational team that includes NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. and Lincoln Laboratory at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass. Although NASA has developed higher data-rate radio frequency systems, data-compression, and other techniques to boost the amount of data that its current systems can handle, the Agency's capabilities will not keep pace with the projected data needs of advanced instruments and future human exploration, Israel added.

"Just as the home Internet user hit the wall with dial-up, NASA is approaching the limit of what its existing communications network can handle," he said.

The solution is to augment NASA's legacy radio-based network, which includes a fleet of tracking and data relay satellites and a network of ground stations, with optical systems, which could increase data rates by anywhere from 10 to 100 times. "This transition will take several years to complete, but the eventual payback will be very large increases in the amount of data we can transmit, both downlink and uplink, especially to distant destinations in the solar system and beyond," said James Reuther, director of OCT's Crosscutting Technology Demonstrations Division.

First Step

The LCRD is the next step in that direction, Israel said, likening the emerging capability to land-based fiber-optic systems, such as Verizon's FiOS network. "In a sense, we're moving FiOS to space."

To demonstrate the new capability, the Goddard team will encode digital data and transmit the information via laser light from specially equipped ground stations to an experimental payload hosted on the commercial communications satellite.

The payload will include telescopes, lasers, mirrors, detectors, a pointing and tracking system, control electronics, and two different types of modems. One modem is ideal for communicating with deep space missions or tiny, low-power smallsats operating in low-Earth orbit. The other can handle much higher data rates, particularly from Earth-orbiting spacecraft, including the International Space Station. "With the higher-speed modem type, future systems could support data rates of tens of gigabits per second," Israel said.

Once the payload receives the data, it would then relay it back to ground stations now scheduled to operate in Hawaii and Southern California.

The multiple ground stations are important to demonstrating a fully operational system, Israel said. Cloud cover and turbulent atmospheric conditions impede laser communications, requiring a clear line of sight between the transmitter and receiver. If bad weather prevents a signal from being sent or received at one location, the network could hand over the responsibility to one of the other ground stations or store it for later retransmission.

The demonstration is expected to run two to three years.

Follow-On to LADEE Experiment

The project isn't NASA's first foray into laser communications. Goddard engineers are now developing a laser communications payload for NASA's Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE), which the Agency plans to launch in 2013 to characterize the Moon's wisp-thin atmosphere and dust environment. The main goal of the LADEE experiment is proving fundamental concepts of laser-based communications and transferring up to 622 megabits per second, which is about five times the current state-of-the-art from lunar distances.

However, the LADEE payload, called the Lunar Laser Communications Demonstration (LLCD), is equipped with only one modem, the lower-speed model best suited for deep space communications. In addition, LADEE is a short-duration mission. LLCD is expected to operate for only 16 days of the LADEE mission, not enough time to demonstrate a fully operational laser-communications network, Israel said.

"What we're trying to do is get ahead of the curve," Israel said. "We want to get to the point where communications is no longer a constraint on scientists who want to gather more data, but are worried about getting their data back from space."

Experts: Pilot likely unconscious in Reno crash (AP)

RENO, Nev. ? The veteran aviator whose plane slammed into a crowd of Nevada air race spectators at 400 mph had no chance to save his ill-fated flight after likely losing consciousness from acceleration more abrupt and extreme than even what most fighter pilots endure, flying experts said.

Jimmy Leeward's aircraft shot skyward like a rocket Friday before plunging into spectators at what appeared to be full throttle. Federal investigators continue to look for a cause of the crash at the National Championship Air Races that killed 11 people, including Leeward, and injured dozens, but have yet to come to a conclusion, something that could take months.

They're focused on a range of possibilities, including Leeward's health and the structural soundness of the plane after a piece of the tail called the "elevator trim tab" that helps control the aircraft's pitch appeared to break off before the crash.

While some have called the 74-year-old Leeward heroic for making a last-ditch maneuver around crowded stands, experts who have reviewed multiple amateur videos from the scene, photographs and witness accounts doubt that theory. They say it appears Leeward wasn't controlling the plane during the fateful last few seconds.

"He's not there. He's unconscious," said Ernie Christensen, a retired rear admiral and former Vietnam fighter pilot who commanded the Navy's Top Gun fighter school for a time in the 1980s.

Christensen said one key clue that Leeward wasn't at the controls is the fact that his highly modified P-51 Mustang appeared to hit the ground at full throttle.

"The first thing you do when you get into those conditions is pull power, and that plane hit fast," he said. "The power was up and that's an indication he was not in control of the airplane when it hit."

Leeward was near the end of his race Friday when he narrowly missed the grandstands packed with fans and jerked into a steep climb at up to 500 mph, streaking skyward possibly a thousand feet or more before twirling and speeding into the ground.

Friday's crash was the nation's deadliest air racing disaster, with 11 confirmed dead and 14 others still being treated at Reno hospitals. In all, more than 70 people were admitted for injuries after the crashing plane sprayed shrapnel into the crowd of spectators, cutting limbs and other body parts.

Twenty pilots, including Leeward, have died at the races over the past 47 years, but this was the first time fans were killed.

Christensen said if Leeward were conscious, he would have cut power back once he gained altitude.

"Altitude is sanctuary," he said.

"And his nose didn't hang, it came over like he was doing almost a loop ... and when his nose came down he started gaining air speed," Christensen added. "This guy had the power up."

Rough calculations by experts using video of the plane seconds before the crash indicate it might have been traveling at more than 400 mph when it suddenly went vertical, abruptly exerting 11 times the normal force of gravity on the pilot's body, or 11 Gs, knocking him unconscious as the blood rushed from his brain.

By comparison, Christensen said, F-16 fighter pilots, who wear special suits to counter the G-forces, can typically take 9 Gs, but only for a limited time. And those are modern planes designed with tilted seats intended to help keep blood flow to the brain.

Average roller coasters expose riders to about 2 to 3 Gs, but only for brief moments.

Ken Liano, a structural engineer and aircraft consultant, said "it's highly doubtful" Leeward was awake.

"My first thought when I saw the video was there's no way that pilot is in control," Liano said. "He went from horizontal to vertical so abruptly. No pilot would do that. Even an acrobatic pilot would probably not do that maneuver."

Liano speculated the loss of the trim tab started the sequence of events. Leeward's World War II-era plane was highly modified for speed, much like other aircraft at the races. But the plane wasn't originally designed that way, so the extra speed gained from the modifications likely stressed the structure, causing the failure, he said.

"Eleven Gs is a lot," said Dr. Daniel Foster, an active duty flight surgeon at Pensacola Naval Air Station in Florida. "It probably would have been very difficult for him to maintain consciousness."

He said fighter pilots train to combat the G-forces using abdominal exercises, among other things, to keep the blood in their heads.

Typically, as the forces increase, Foster said, symptoms will gradually appear, such as nausea, faintness, then cloudy vision, and there's time to work to counteract the impact on the body.

But if the extreme acceleration comes on suddenly, and is prolonged, such as the case with Leeward, "it can be very rapid," Foster said. "You'd go from zero to unconscious."

iPad to dominate tablet market for the next three years. Sorry, Android.

The iPad will continue to lead the tablet race well into 2014, according to one new report. Not that things are all bad for Android.

It's no secret that Apple has the tablet market in a throttle hold.

For proof, check in with the Motorola Xoom, the HP TouchPad, and the BlackBerry PlayBook, all cutting-edge devices which have bumped up, in one way or another, against the enduring supremacy of the iPad. Or check in with the folks at Gartner, who this week published a report indicating that Apple will have a "free run" over its competitors for the next three years.

"We expect Apple to maintain a market share lead throughout our forecast period by commanding more than 50 percent of the market until 2014," Carolina Milanesi, research vice president at Gartner said in a statement. "This is because Apple delivers a superior and unified user experience across its hardware, software and services. Unless competitors can respond with a similar approach, challenges to Apple?s position will be minimal."

Not that things are completely terrible for iPad competitors. According to Gartner, Android tablets are on pace to ship 11 million units in 2011, which would account for 17.3 percent of all tablet sales. Not too shabby! And certainly up from Android?s 2010 market share of 14.3 percent. But contrast that with the whopping 73.4 percent of the market currently held by Apple, and, well, you get the point.

"So far, Android?s appeal in the tablet market has been constrained by high prices, weak user interface and limited tablet applications," Gartner's Milanesi said. "Google will address the fragmentation of Android across smartphone and tablet form factors within the next Android release, known as ?Ice Cream Sandwich,? which we expect to see in the fourth quarter of 2011."

Until then, the advantage is all Apple's.

On a related note, here's a question for all you tech watchers out there: Is the Apple iPad more like the Apple iPhone or the Apple iPod? The iPod, after all, defined an entire category of device, and dominated that category, even in the face of usurpers such as the Microsoft Zune. The iPhone, meanwhile, was eventually and effectively countered by Google's Android, which is currently top dog in the smartphone race.

Discuss.

(AP) ? Pope Benedict XVI addressed Germany's parliament from the historic Reichstag building Thursday, warning that politicians must not sacrifice ethics for power and evoking the Nazi excesses of his homeland as a lesson in history.

Amid scattered protests outside and a boycott by some lawmakers, Benedict began his first state visit to Germany in a bid to stem the tide of Catholics leaving the church while acknowledging the damage caused by the clerical sex abuse scandal.

The pope spoke for 20 minutes in the Reichstag, which was torched in 1933 in an incident used by Hitler to strengthen his grip on power.

"We Germans know from our own experience" what happens when power is corrupted, Benedict said, describing Nazis as a "highly organized band of robbers, capable of threatening the whole world and driving it to the edge of the abyss."

But he said even under the Nazi dictatorship resistance movements stuck to their beliefs at a great risk, "thereby doing a great service to justice and to humanity as a whole."

He also urged all Germans not to ignore religion.

"Even today, there is ultimately nothing else we could wish for but a listening heart ? the capacity to discern between good and evil, and thus to establish true law, to serve justice and peace," he said.

The Bavarian-born pontiff was met on a red carpet at Berlin's Tegel airport by German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Christian Wulff at the start of his four-day visit. He greeted members of the German Catholic Church, and children waiting with small yellow-and-white Vatican flags presented him with a bouquet.

About 20 protesters stood outside the airport, holding banners with slogans like "Against anti-Semitism, sexism and homophobia" and "My body, my choice."

The Vatican's views on contraception, the role of women, homosexuality and its handling of the sexual abuse scandal that rocked Germany last year are seen by many in Germany as outdated.

About 100 lawmakers from opposition parties boycotted the pope's appearance, claiming it violated the church-state separation. But Benedict looked out on a mostly full house as guests occupied the empty seats and finished his speech to a standing ovation.

Police estimated that only "several thousand" protesters ended up showing up at the capital's Potsdamer Platz, far fewer than organizers had predicted. Some 6,000 officers were on hand throughout the city.

Benedict, who has long favored environmental causes, also voiced strong support for Germany's ecological movement, calling it "a cry for fresh air which must not be ignored or pushed aside."

In a rally during the pope's speech, protesters held signs with slogans like "Not welcome" and "Where there's enlightenment, there's future."

"Today is a good day to be visible," Maria Pflugradt, a 22-year-old student from Cottbus told The Associated Press. "Not only because he is against homosexuals, but also because the church has made far too many mistakes in the last centuries and I think the government and politics should not be so close to him."

In parliament, Speaker Norbert Lammert welcomed the pope, noting that the last time there was a pontiff of German origin Germany didn't yet even exist as a state.

"Germany is a country that over centuries was strongly marked by religion and religious wars," Lammert said. "A country whose Christian traditions of belief also influence the constitution we have today."

But flagging Christian influence in Europe was one of the themes of Benedict, who has often lamented that the continent is ignoring its Christian roots.

"We are witnessing a growing indifference to religion in society," he said at a formal welcoming ceremony at the German president's Bellevue palace. He called religion a foundation for a successful society and said its values were essential for freedom.

Benedict said the presidential palace, which was destroyed in World War II, was a reminder of German history.

"A clear look at the past, even at its dark pages, enables us to learn from it and to receive an impetus for the present," the pope said.

Over the next four days, the pope has meetings with leaders of Germany's Jewish and Muslim communities, three Masses, an ecumenical service with Lutheran church members and other meetings, and possibly meetings with victims abused by priests.

More than 250,000 people are registered attend his Masses, starting with an open-air service Thursday night in Berlin's Olympic Stadium.

Benedict was not expected to meet with German Roman Catholic dissidents who have called for allowing women priests and ending mandatory celibacy for priests.

He told reporters on the plane the church needs to examine why people have been leaving recently and the part that the cleric abuse scandals have played in that.

"I can understand that some people have been scandalized by the crimes that have been revealed in recent times," he said. "(There are both) good and bad fish in the Lord's net."

The German president, himself Catholic, warmly welcomed the pope and praised the role played by the Church in supporting German reunification more than 20 years ago. But, at the same time, Wulff clearly expressed his understanding of why many Germans can no longer relate to a church.

"It is important for the Church to remain close to the people and not to turn inward on itself," Wulff said.

The president also noted that as a remarried divorcee, he is not allowed to accept communion.

"Many ask themselves how mercifully it treats people who have suffered breakups in their own lives," Wulff said.

Vatican spokesman the Rev. Federico Lombardi called the president's remarks "beautiful and very sincere."
