AP Source: Eichorst resigns as Miami AD

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? Shawn Eichorst resigned as Miami's athletic director on Thursday, the latest blow to a department bracing to be hit by NCAA sanctions, said a person with knowledge of the situation.

The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the university ? which was scrambling Thursday to decide how to fill Eichorst's role on a short-term basis ? had not publicly announced Eichorst's decision. Various reports in Nebraska have identified Eichorst this week as a candidate to replace the retiring Tom Osborne as the Cornhuskers' athletic director.

Eichorst, who has not spoken with reporters in months, did not immediately return an e-mail seeking comment. His resignation comes two days before Miami plays Notre Dame, the first regular-season meeting between the storied football programs since 1990.

Eichorst's tenure at Miami lasted less than 18 months. He was hired by the Hurricanes after serving as Wisconsin's Chief Operating Officer for athletics, overseeing a $90 million budget and being closely involved with a $100 million construction project for ice hockey, swimming and football. Eichorst was highly recommended for the Miami job by his one-time boss at Wisconsin, athletic director Barry Alvarez ? a close friend of Miami President Donna Shalala.

Alvarez is also a graduate of Nebraska.

Eichorst arrived with Miami's athletic department in flux: Funds were being raised for facility upgrades, and the school was in the process of hiring a basketball coach to replace Frank Haith, eventually deciding on bringing in Jim Larranaga. Quietly, though, the Hurricanes were also under NCAA investigation over their compliance practices, which wound up overshadowing everything Eichorst did at Miami.

The story over Miami's NCAA mess broke publicly in August 2011, when claims made by former booster and convicted Ponzi scheme architect Nevin Shapiro ? now serving a 20-year prison term for his role in bilking investors out of $930 million ? were published by Yahoo Sports. Shapiro said he provided dozens of Miami athletes and recruits with impermissible benefits over an eight-year period starting in 2002.

The NCAA is expected to provide Miami with its notice of allegations later this year, with sanctions ? which could be severe ? to follow.

And now, the Hurricanes have something else to deal with. Eichorst was believed to be working closely with the NCAA during the joint inquiry into the athletic department, so his departure comes at a difficult time for the department ? and the university, which is already dealing with a number of issues unrelated to the investigation, such as dwindling football attendance and major financial problems involving its highly touted medical school.

Eichorst addressed the scandal in a roundtable interview with Miami reporters on Nov. 1, 2011.

"I'm not making any excuses. I'm not asking anybody to feel sorry for me or anybody else," Eichorst said. "I've got a job to do and I'm only looking forward. I'm not looking backwards."

Eichorst declined virtually all interview requests since.

He appeared on Miami's football practice field at least once this week, and had been planning to be at the Hurricanes' game in Chicago against Notre Dame on Saturday night.

Video: Rossen: Some smoke detectors may not go off in time

>>> back now at 7:44. this morning on "rossen reports," startling claims that the most popular kind of smoke detector may not protect your family in a fire. today national investigative correspondent jeff rossen is here with the details. jeff, good morning.

>> hey, savannah, good morning this. really does affect all of us. we've all been there. you burn toast in your house and suddenly your smoke alarm goes off, so you assume it's ultra sensitive, but experts say think again. turns out smoke from burning food is much different than smoke from burning furniture. in fact, we found in a real fire your smoke detector may not go off in time to save your family.

>> 911.

>> i have a fire in my home. i've got a baby i've got to crawl with.

>> reporter: a desperate mother waking up to a house full of smoke trying to save her kids.

>> as i'm trying to get upstairs, my first thought is the four people that i have upstairs to try to make sure that they are not scared to death, that they are safe and that they are okay.

>> i have four children dead in the house. it's burning. it's incinerated.

>> reporter: the kids didn't make it. cause of death , smoke inhalation , so why didn't they have more warning? after all the house had working smoke detectors .

>> we put fresh batteries in the smoke detectors . we pushed the test buttons so i knew they worked, and then when it was time they never went off.

>> reporter: amanda says she had the most common type of smoke detector used in 90% of homes, inexpensive, easy-to-find alarms that rely on ionization technology. work well to detect fires with fast flames, but experts say some of the most deadly fires are the smouldering smokey kind that can fill your home with toxic gases while you sleep. experts say in those fires ionization alarms don't work well, going off way too late or not at all.

>> and that means that the individuals could have a fire in their home and never receive a warning.

>> reporter: don russ sell a scientist at texas a&m . he's run hundreds of tests. when i go to the store to buy a smoke detector , i assume it's going to sound when there's smoke.

>> that's a reasonable assumption, but it's wrong.

>> reporter: his findings are a bombshell in the industry, that the most popular smoke detectors may not help you in a fire. you're about to see just how scary that can be. we had dr. russell set up a test at the texas a&m engineering extension service . first, dr. russel placed three ionization detectors, the kind most of us have in a room with a couch. next, fire fighters set a slow smokey fire using a soldering iron . we're watching on monitors outside. fire fighters say every minute counts to get your family out, but watch, the room is filling up with smoke, and the smoke detectors still haven't gone off. it's been 30 minutes .

>> the smoke is all the way towards where the smoke detectors are, and we still don't have any alert from the smoke detectors .

>> reporter: finally at 36 minutes.

>> we do have a smoke detector going off.

>> reporter: minutes later, the other two go off. just as the couch is about to erupt in flames.

>> it's way too late. too dangerous. you couldn't get out of that room reliably.

>> reporter: remember, this is the type of smoke detector most of us have, but there's another technology out there that experts say gives you better warning in these fires. it's called a photoelectric detectors and even government tests show it goes off much sooner in smokey fires. watch what happens when dr. russell sets up another test, this time with a photoelectric next to those three ionization detectors. 17 minutes in with barely any smoke in the room the photoelectric sounds the alarm.

>> photoelectric is telling us you've got a fireworks get out, solve the problem, get out of house.

>> reporter: meanwhile, toxic smoke is overtaking the room. in fact, it takes another 21 minutes before any ionization detectors go off. these seasoned fire fighters are shocked.

>> all i can think about about was my own family, and if i would have relied on ionization, my family probably wouldn't make it out so with the photoelectric, they would have had plenty of time to get out.

>> reporter: photoelectric technology has been around for decades, and while the leading smoke detector companies make photoelectric alarms, they still sell most of their products without it.

>> i think it's probably a business decision.

>> reporter: the ionization detectors cost less money to make than the photoelectric.

>> that is a correct statement.

>> reporter: companies told us all their detectors provide adequate escape time and meet safety standards .

>> they will only respond when there is government pressure to do so.

>> reporter: so we went straight to the government agency overseeing the companies, the consumer product safety commission . why not tell the smoke detector companies make sure to get that photoelectric technology into all of your detectors so you're covered completely? why not mandate it?

>> because both technologies are working and saving lives.

>> reporter: we know of several cases where the smoke alarm people say just did not go off.

>> in those cases, that's -- they need to practice a fire escape plan to make sure that they can get out.

>> reporter: if the smoke detector didn't get out and the house is full of smoke by the time that it does, what does an escape plan do?

>> it helps them escape better when the smoke alarm eventually goes off.

>> reporter: but eventually isn't good enough for amanda deputy who lost nearly everything.

>> i would like to think that if i had known that i might have a familiar life seven instead of a family of three.

>> reporter: to be clear no, one is saying throw out your smoke alarm . fire officials say the best advice is to have both technologies. you can even buy a dual detector that has both those technologies in one, savannah, though it costs a little more money.

Like humans, monkeys can make irrational decisions when making choices

ScienceDaily (Oct. 3, 2012) ? When making decisions about the value of an assortment of different objects, people approximate an average overall value, which though frequently useful can lead to apparently irrational decision-making. A new study published Oct 3 in PLOS ONE by Jerald Kralik and colleagues at Dartmouth College shows for the first time that non-human primates also make similar 'irrational' choices based on approximation.

In the study, researchers found that rhesus monkeys preferred a highly-valued food item (a fruit) alone to the identical item paired with a food of positive but lower value (fruit and a vegetable).

The researchers suggest that this behavior is similar to what has been seen in previous studies with humans, where participants rated a 24-piece dinnerware set more highly than one with the same 24 pieces, plus 16 more pieces of which nine were broken.

According to the authors, decision-making processes in humans and other primates have evolved towards reducing the complexity in choices between large groups of assorted items, which may result in such irrational choices.

"People often judge a group -- of valuables, of foods, of other people -- by its average rather than by the sum of its parts. Our study shows that monkeys appear to do the same thing, which suggests that both monkeys and people inherited a particular way of simplifying the world around us, making choices easier, sometimes at the expense of 'rationality'" says Kralik.

PST: Champions League winners, losers

We?ve given our thoughts on the results, but now let?s look beyond the final scores to take inventory of the day?s big winners and losers ? what stood out from Champions League Tuesday:

WINNERS

1. Road teams rock - Visiting sides crushed it on Tuesday: Five wins, one draw in eight games. Having Barcelona, Chelsea, and Manchester United on the road helped that total, but as we saw in Minsk, big names aren?t guaranteed results. We may have to call UEFA to figure out how often this happens, because no single day in last season?s tournament produced more than four road wins.

2. Minnows with bite - It?s hard to overstate the magnitude of BATE?s upset over Bayern Munich, winning 3-2 in Minsk. Bayern had been the hottest team in the world, but not anymore. Come minute 91, they were just the latest part of BATE?s perfect Champions League start. In a group with Bayern, Valencia, and Lille, it?s the Belarusians who have an improbable lead.

In Russia, a minnow got a rare road win, though it?s unusual to think of Celtic as minnows. Still, given how they?ve recently performed in Europe, a win at Spartak Moscow looked highly unlikely. But thanks to an early goal, a sending off, and a Spartak overgoal, Celtic was able to take a 3-2 win out of the Luzhniki Stadium. Through two rounds, Celtic sits on four points, more than many would have picked them to claim all competition.

3. The future of Rooney-van Persie ? It?s been a big topic of discussion since Robin van Persie traded London for Manchester: How good can this duo be? Fitness issues, poor form, and the bottom of Hugo Rodallega?s boot held Rooney back, but if the last 135 minutes of play are any indication, this duo could dominate. Rooney?s inclusion against Tottenham almost turned Saturday?s match, while a beautiful 35-yard pass in today?s second half helped setup van Persie?s winning goal.

4. Cesc F?bregas - One week ago, F?bregas was worried about his place in the Barcelona team, with Tito Vilanova showing him less playing team than he?d seen under Pep Guariola. There were (thin, comical) rumors of him moving back to Arsenal. Since, F?bregas has three goals in two games, including one on Tuesday against Benfica. Cesc looks just as much a part of Barcelona as he did last season.

MORE: Snap judgments from Tuesday?s action

LOSERS

1. Carles Puyol - Puyol has been a miss for a Barcelona team that?s often had to go with two midfielders (Alexander Song and Javier Mascherano) in central defense. He returned today only to be stretchered off the field, suffering a dislocated elbow. The timetable for his return wasn?t immediately available.

2. Matchday one momentum - Cluj pulled an upset, Juventus got a surprise draw in London, while Spartak Moscow and Galatasaray had close calls at giants on matchday one. Did any of that matter on matchday two? Mostly no, though Cluj played with the confidence of a team that?s thinking second round (even if they still lost to Manchester United).

For the other three teams looking to build on day one results, there were no silver linings. Juventus were played to a draw in Turin while Spartak and Gala were upset at home.

3. Istanbul?s reputation - That upset of Galatasaray deserves an extra bullet point. Coming into the tournament we heard the likes of Ryan Giggs talking about the nightmare that was playing in Istanbul. But how much of a nightmare can it be if Sporting Braga got a 2-0 result at the Turk Telecom Arena?

When you ask a question like that, it?s always easy to overlook the winner?s performance. Still, it?s hard to consider Istanbul such a difficult trip when a team like Braga can go from being embarrassed at home by CFR Cluj to winning at Galatasaray, Turkey?s champions. The Super L?g?s best can no longer hold their own.

4. Bayern mystique - In the past, the name ?Bayern M?nchen? would have won these matches before they started. Obviously, BATE does not live in the past. Bayern allowed more goals on Tuesday (three) than they?ve given up all season in Germany. No matter your opinion of BATE (who now sit on six points), Tuesday?s result was an bust for FC Hollywood.

Video: NAACP: Ex-felons disenfranchised

>> we mentioned at the top of the hour a judge in pennsylvania put a temporarily hold on a tough voter i.d. law ordering it not be enforced in this year's presidential election. there's another large group of potential voters, 4.5 million people according to a new report, who are not allowed to vote. their felons who served time in jail. almost half of those affected are african-american. the naacp is launching a campaign to restore voting rights to those felons. joining me right now is the naacp president. a lot of african-american lawmakers, but this came up during the fox news debate, january 16th , the republican primary . rick santorum actually took it on governor romney . let me play what happened during that time.

>> the bill i voted on was the martin luther king voting rights bill. this was a provision that particularly targeted african-americans, and i voted to allow them to have their voting rights back once they completed their sentence.

>> governor romney , 30 seconds to respond.

>> i don't think people who have committed violent crimes should be allowed to vote again. that's my own view.

>> rick santorum was calling out romney on that saying he changed his position there. this is not just kept in the confines of black community or within the democratic party .

>> no, that's right. rick santorum is for this. jeb bush and charlie crist made it happen in florida . governor scott turned the clock back and took the right to vote back from formerly incarcerated people. it's outrageous. this is a kuncountry where we believe voting is a right and we believe all people should have a second chance. the notion that a sigts governor like governor scott would undo what his republican colleague just did, roll the clock back and take the vote away from tens of thousands of formerly incarcerated people who could stroet vote in two-thirds of the states in this country are outrageous. that's why we push this issue here and across the country.

>> florida , virginia, iowa and kentucky are the only states where former felons don't automatically get their rights back after serving their sentences. we were looking at pennsylvania, and you had elderly people there, and in wisconsin came out and said i've been voting my he whole life. i'm 88 and 90 years old, and now i can't vote. latino voters say i'm put under this requirement possibly that cannot be obtained. i cannot get my i.d. under these circumstances. is it harder to get people to support felons in some cases who have been convicted of obviously violent crimes? is that part of the roadblock at all or not?

>> yeah. what helps here is for folks to really focus on just what a wide swath of people and month gets impacted. you know, we heard from charles dutton today on the tv show "the rock" back in the '90s who for 31 years after he got out of prison could not vote paying millions of dollars and talking about how he was subjected to taxation without representation even after he served his time. it helps folks to focus on the history. these laws were put in place for a reason. they were put in place as a wave right after the civil war . in states like virginia you talked about earlier it said quite plainly the person that made the argument for this law in 1901 made it very plain. he said because of this law, the darky will be zeroed out as a factor in our state's politics in five years and he said how he would support white supremacy as a norm across the state. these laws were never about ex-felon bans but affecting the black vote. here's in florida the first governor to expand the use pushed it in 1865 . it was for him about pushing off negro suffrage. that's what we're dealing with here, is a vestage of jim crow we have to get rid of.

>> thank you so much for your time. greatly appreciate it, ben.

MacArthur Foundation reveals 2012 'genius grants'

Mandolin player and composer Chris Thile learned the hard way that when you get a call from the 312 area code this time of year, you should probably answer the phone.

Thile is among 23 recipients of this year's MacArthur Foundation "genius grants," which are given in a secrecy-shrouded process. Winners have no idea they've been nominated for the $500,000 awards until they get the call, and nominators must remain anonymous.

Thile ignored the incessant phone calls from the foundation at first, thinking they were election-year robocalls. Then he received an ominous message: "Don't tell anyone about this call."

His tour manager searched for the number online and told him, "It appears to be from something called the MacArthur Foundation." It was a name Thile recognized.

"I think I must have turned white," he said. "I've never felt so internally warm. My heart was racing. All of a sudden, I felt very askew physically. I was trying to catch my breath. ... I thought, 'Oh my God, did I win a MacArthur?'"

The grants, paid over five years, give recipients freedom to pursue a creative vision. Winners, who work in fields ranging from medicine and science to the arts and journalism, don't have to report how they spend the money.

Thile, who played with Nickel Creek and is now touring with Punch Brothers, said he may use the grant to fund a chamber music project for a bluegrass quintet.

Northwestern University historian Dylan C. Penningroth said he now can expand his search for court records of property owned by slaves in the pre-Civil War South.

"This grant will make it possible for me to think big, to be more ambitious about the time period I cover and the questions I'm trying to answer, like, what's the connection to the modern civil rights era?" Penningroth said.

For other winners ? there have been 873 so far, including this year's recipients ? the grants bring prestige, confirmation and, in some cases, moments of profound reflection about life and fate.

"It left me thinking about my childhood," said Dominican-American author Junot Diaz, who wrote the Pulitzer-winning novel "The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao."

"It would never have dawned on me to think such a thing was possible for me," Diaz said, reflecting on his early years in New Jersey "struggling with poverty, struggling with English. ... I came from a community that was about as hard-working as you can get and yet no one saw or recognized in any way our contributions or our genius. ... I have to wonder, but for circumstances, how many other kids that I came up with are more worthy of this fellowship than me?"

David Finkel, author and national enterprise editor for the Washington Post, said the grant will allow him to complete a story he began in his book, "The Good Soldiers." The nonfiction work recounted the experiences of a U.S. Army infantry battalion deployed to Baghdad as part of the 2007 surge. Finkel is now following returning soldiers and their families, "watching a lot of them sink lower and lower and try to get help and maybe not doing so well with the help that's out there."

Winning a MacArthur grant felt like an endorsement not only of his own work, he said, but also of the type of long-form journalism he practices, which is in jeopardy as newspapers respond to the digital age. Declining circulation has forced newspaper publishers to shrink the size of their print publications and their staffs. Finkel admires the experimentation under way in journalism, but added: "I'm old-fashioned. The thing I'm most moved by is a well-told, deeply reported long story."

Maurice Lim Miller saw the MacArthur nod as validation of his project, called the Family Independence Initiative. The project, started in 2001 in Oakland, Calif., rewards self-sufficiency among residents of low-income neighborhoods by bringing groups of friends together and asking them to track the steps they take toward saving money, finding jobs, helping their children do well in school and other goals. Families increase their incomes and savings, start businesses and buy homes, he said.

Neither liberal nor conservative, the initiative transcends the current political debate about personal responsibility, Lim Miller said.

"Our work falls between the arguments that are being had between the right and the left," Lim Miller said. "The argument that people DON'T take personal responsibility is wrong. But the argument that they SHOULD take personal responsibility is right."

MacArthur winner Elissa Hallem is studying how parasitic worms find hosts through their sense of smell. Threadworms, attracted by carbon dioxide, can enter a person's body through the soles of the feet, for example. Hallem's work may someday prevent parasites from harming humans and improve the efficiency of good parasites that infect crop-killing insects.

"I didn't manage to say much other than, 'Wow' and 'Thank you,'" Hallem said about the "genius grant" call, which came as she was working in the microscope room at the University of California, Los Angeles. "I feel very honored that they recognized my work in this way and are making this investment in my research."

Korea peninsula could face "thermonuclear war," North tells U.N.

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.S. policy toward North Korea has made the Korean peninsula the most dangerous place on the planet because a "spark" there could ignite a nuclear war, a senior North Korean official told the U.N. General Assembly on Monday.

One of the last speakers at the 193-nation assembly's annual gathering in New York, North Korean Vice Foreign Minister Pak Kil-yon was also full of praise for Kim Jong-un, the reclusive communist country's young new leader.

"Today, due to the continued U.S. hostile policy towards DPRK, the vicious cycle of confrontation and aggravation of tensions is an ongoing phenomenon on the Korean peninsula, which has become the world's most dangerous hot spot where a spark of fire could set off a thermonuclear war," Pak said.

DPRK refers to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the country's official name.

Speaking of North Korea's nuclear "deterrent," Pak said that it was a "mighty weapon that defends the country's sovereignty."

North Korea is under U.N. Security Council sanctions due to its 2006 and 2009 nuclear tests. Earlier this year, Western powers had expressed concern that North Korea would carry out another atomic test but that detonation never took place.

North Korea has long argued that in the face of a hostile United States, which has military bases in South Korea and Japan, it needs a nuclear arsenal to defend itself.

Six-party aid-for-disarmament talks involving the two Koreas, the United States, Japan, Russia and China have been stalled since 2008.

Pak said that the North Korean people were united behind their new leader, who came to power after Kim's father Kim Jong-il died last December.

"Our dear respected marshal, Kim Jong-un, is firmly determined to make our people, who have overcome manifold hardships, enjoy a happy life to their heart's content in a prosperous, socialist state," he said.

"Our people are following dear respected marshal Kim Jong-un with absolute trust in him and are vigorously advancing to the final victory with full conviction and optimism about the future, single-heartedly united behind him," Pak said.

United Nations estimates show that a third of North Korea's population is malnourished, and the economy still has yet to regain output levels seen in the 1990s, when a devastating famine and the withdrawal of Soviet aid hit the country hard.

A formal peace treaty to end the 1950-53 Korean War between the North and South, rather than the armistice in place, has been a longstanding demand from North Korea, which wants diplomatic recognition from the United States.

The United States and its ally South Korea, which is host to more than 28,000 U.S. troops, insist that North Korea give up its nuclear ambitions before considering a peace treaty and large-scale economic aid.

North Korea withdrew from the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 2003, the first country to do so. For North Korea, analysts say its ability to threaten nuclear war has long been its only real diplomatic leverage with the outside world, especially the United States.

Presidential Proclamation -- National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

The White House

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release

October 01, 2012

NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, 2012

- - - - - - -

BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

A PROCLAMATION

Breast cancer touches the lives of Americans from every background and in every community across our Nation. Though we have made great strides in combatting this devastating illness, more than 200,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year, and tens of thousands are expected to lose their lives to the disease. During National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we honor those we have lost, lend our strength to those who carry on the fight, and pledge to educate ourselves and our loved ones about this tragic disease.

Though the exact causes of breast cancer are unknown, understanding its risk factors is essential to prevention. Older women and those who have a personal or family history of breast cancer are among those at greater risk of developing the illness. Early detection is also key in the fight against breast cancer. Getting recommended screening mammograms can help to detect breast cancer early. I encourage women and men to speak with their health care provider about breast cancer, and to visit www.Cancer.gov to learn more about symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.

My Administration remains committed to ensuring access to quality health care that includes preventive services for women. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, many health plans are required to cover mammograms and other recommended cancer screenings without co-pays or deductibles. Starting in 2014, it will also ensure that no American can be denied health insurance because of a pre-existing condition -- including breast cancer.

This month, we stand with the mothers, daughters, sisters, aunts, and friends who have been affected by breast cancer, and we recognize the ongoing efforts of dedicated advocates, researchers, and health care providers who strive each day to defeat this terrible disease. In memory of the loved ones we have lost and inspired by the resilience of those living with the disease, let us strengthen our resolve to lead our Nation toward a future free from cancer in all its forms.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 2012 as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. I encourage citizens, government agencies, private businesses, nonprofit organizations, and all other interested groups to join in activities that will increase awareness of what Americans can do to prevent breast cancer.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this first day of October, in the year of our Lord two thousand twelve, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-seventh.

BARACK OBAMA
