The 100-year-old marathoner snubbed by Guinness World Records (The Week)

New York ? Centenarian Fauja Singh completes the Toronto marathon, but the record keepers say he doesn't have adequate proof of his wise, old age

Hearts were warmed around the world earlier this month when Britain's Fauja Singh, 100, became the oldest man ever to complete a full marathon. On October 16, Singh finished the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon in eight hours, 25 minutes and 16 seconds. It was one for the record books, or so it seemed. Now, Guinness World Records is refusing to recognize Singh's feat because he can't produce his birth certificate from 1911. Here, a brief guide to the sporting world's birther scandal:

Who is Fauja Singh?
After his finish in the Toronto marathon, the 100-year-old east Londoner began claiming the title of world's oldest marathoner. As a younger man, Singh earned a place in Guinness World Records' "over 90" category for finishing the 2003 Toronto marathon in five hours and 40 minutes. (The organization says that record isn't ratified either.) Singh has lived in the U.K. since 1992. He previously worked as a farmer in Punjab. In recent years, he's appeared in the Adidas "Nothing is Impossible" campaign. He has completed ten marathons.

What proof is Guinness demanding?
The organization requires Singh's 1911 birth certificate from India. Singh's trainer, Harmandar Singh, who acts as a spokesperson for the runner because Singh doesn't speak English, has said that such documents weren't available at the time. "In the developing countries, their standards simply aren't up to western standards," he says. In lieu of a birth certificate, Singh has offered his passport and a letter from the Queen wishing him a happy 100th birthday. The record keepers say that just won't do. "We would love to give him the record," says Craig Glenday, Guinness World Records' editor-in-chief. "The problem is there is just no evidence." "Come on! Just? look at him!" exclaims Mark Remy at Runner's World. "He's gotta be 100 years old! At least! Did you not see the man's beard?"

Has Singh's passport been enough proof for other organizations?
Yes. The World Masters Athletics website accepts the passport as proof. Singh's 2003 marathon is listed on the site. There are also claims that Singh holds the U.K. records for his age group at various short distances, from 200 meters to 3,000 meters, but the British Master Athletics says they're not official records because official timekeepers were not present.

How long has he been running?
Not long. When his wife and son died 11 years ago, Singh took up competitive running and decided to pursue a world record so as not to wallow in his grief. He credits running, his vegetarian diet, and his stress-free existence for his long life. "I won't stop running until I die," he says.

Google paid $151 million for Zagat: filing (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Google Inc paid $151 million in cash to acquire popular restaurant review guide Zagat in September, the Internet company said in a regulatory filing on Wednesday.

The acquisition, which added a valuable brand to Google's content offerings and bolstered its push into the local commerce market, was one of 57 deals completed by the Web search company in the first nine months of 2011.

Google, the world's No.1 Internet search engine, has been acquiring companies at a rapid clip, as it moves to expand into new markets and adapt its product to a world in which consumers increasingly rely on mobile devices and social networking services to access the Internet.

Google also acquired Daily Deals, a privately held, German online coupon company, for $114 million in cash in September, Google said in the filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. And it completed the acquisition of ITA Software for $676 million in cash in April.

Google said it completed 54 other acquisitions and purchases of intangible assets during the first nine months of 2011 for roughly $502 million.

During that same period in 2010, Google completed 37 deals for $626 million, excluding the acquisitions of Slide, AdMob and On2 Technologies, for which Google paid a combined $983 million.

Google announced its acquisition of Zagat Survey, which polls consumers and compiles reviews about restaurants, hotels and other businesses around the world, in September, but did not disclose a price at the time.

Google's largest deal to date, the planned $12.5 billion acquisition of mobile phone maker Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc is pending regulatory approval. Google has said it expects the deal, announced in August, to close later this year or early in 2012.

The key was in the glazed staring eyes

Researchers have found evidence for the existence of a hypnotic state -- the key was in the glazed staring eyes

A multidisciplinary group of researchers from Finland (University of Turku and Aalto University) and Sweden (University of Skvde) has found that strange stare may be a key that can eventually lead to a solution to this long debate about the existence of a hypnotic state.

One of the most widely known features of a hypnotized person in the popular culture is a glazed, wide-open look in the eyes. Paradoxically, this sign has not been considered to have any major importance among researchers and has never been studied in any detail, probably due to the fact that it can be seen in only some hypnotized people.

This study was done with a very highly hypnotizable participant who can be hypnotized and dehypnotized by just using a one-word cue. The change between hypnotic state and normal state can thus be varied in seconds.

The researchers used high-resolution eye-tracking methodology and presented a set of well-established oculomotor tasks that trigger automatic eye behavior. They found the glazed stare was accompanied by objectively measurable changes in automatic, reflexive eye behavior that could not be imitated by non-hypnotized participants.

In the field of hypnosis research this result means that hypnosis can no longer be regarded as mental imagery that takes place during a totally normal waking state of consciousness. On the other hand, the result may have wider consequences for psychology and cognitive neuroscience, since it provides the first evidence of the existence of a conscious state in humans that has previously not been scientifically confirmed.

Hypnosis has had a long and controversial history in psychology, psychiatry and neurology. For over 100 years researchers have debated if a special hypnotic state exists or whether it is just about using cognitive strategies and mental imagery in a normal waking state. So far, a hypnotic state has never been convincingly demonstrated, and therefore, many researchers regard the hypnotic state to be just a popular myth in psychology.

Tata, Woolworths end 5-year partnership - report (Reuters)

MUMBAI (Reuters) ? Tata Group has not renewed a five-year agreement with Australia's largest retailer Woolworths for retailing consumer electronics in India, the Economic Times reported on Monday, quoting unnamed persons close to the development.

Tata-promoted Infiniti Retail, which runs the Croma and Croma Zip stores, did not renew the agreement that ended in October, and has begun setting up independent warehouses in Mumbai, Bangalore and Chennai, the paper said.

Woolworths provided strategic sourcing to Infiniti from its global network, but the partnership did not involve any financial investment, the report said.

Woolworths is understood to be exploring legal options to challenge Infiniti Retail's decision to call off the partnership, the paper said.

"We are committed to our India business, our alliance with the Tatas and our retail electronics relationship with Infiniti Retail," Woolworths said in an emailed reply to the paper.

The Tata group's external spokeswoman did not immediately respond to queries on the matter. Woolworths officials in India could not be reached for comment.

Utah mom pleads guilty in virginity sale case (AP)

SALT LAKE CITY ? A Utah woman accused of trying to sell her 13-year-old daughter's virginity pleaded guilty Monday to two sexual exploitation charges for having the girl model in her underwear for men.

The 33-year-old woman had also faced two first-degree felony counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child ? and up to life in prison ? but prosecutors agreed to drop those charges in exchange for her plea.

She now faces up to 30 years in prison at sentencing Dec. 5.

Authorities said the woman offered her daughter's virginity to a man in April in exchange for $10,000. Initially, the girl agreed to the arrangement and modeled twice in a bra and underwear for the man. Police said the girl then changed her mind.

Her mother also tried to sell sexually explicit pictures of the girl to another man.

The woman's boyfriend found text messages about the sale of the girl's virginity on the woman's cellphone. He turned them over to police.

She was arrested in May. Prosecutors said the men involved have not been charged.

The woman did not make a statement in court Monday and her defense attorney refused to comment after the hearing.

The Associated Press isn't naming the mother to avoid identifying her daughter.

Contemporary protests are embracing an 'open door' policy

Analysis shows different points of view lead to widespread action, says a Tel Aviv University researcher

As the "Arab Spring" turns to fall and New York's "Occupy Wall Street" protest continues to draw international headlines, a new model of social and political protest has emerged. Based on informal leadership and a multitude of voices, contemporary protests have the potential to become more widespread than ever before.

In her lab, Dr. Tali Hatuka of Tel Aviv University's Department of Geography and the Human Environment analyzes not only the environmental features that impact protests, but the methodology behind the protests themselves. In the last decade, she says, there has been a major shift in the way citizens take to the streets. "Contemporary protests do not look for a unified group. Instead, protestors reflect a variety of outlooks and positions. It's a mass compound of different groups coming together under a general slogan," she explains. "Protests nowadays are based on four principles: difference, decentralization, multiplicity, and informal order."

Her research, which has appeared in the journal Metropolitics and will be the topic of a forthcoming book, attributes the viral-like growth of contemporary protests to the acceptance of different voices under the same ideological umbrella.

All protesters welcome

According to Dr. Hatuka, February 15, 2003, was a crucial, watershed moment. On that day, a worldwide protest was organized against the American invasion of Iraq. The protest spanned more than 800 cities, and participants were encouraged to contribute their own voices and opinions. This was a distinct break from the protests of the 1990's, which were localized and focused on national issues.

Demonstrations in the twentieth century, such as those challenging large and imposing regimes throughout communist Europe, followed a more traditional organization, she says. Protesters were fairly passive, and the message and direction of the protest were shaped by a centralized group of organizers.

Now, the ability of a protest to spread relies on its capacity to bring together a multitude of media, leaders, and points-of-view in a complex way. Though different groups now come together for a common cause, Dr. Hatuka explains, they often maintain their identity through the action. The organizational structure of protests is like a web instead of a strict hierarchy, which contributes to the widespread dissemination of different protests in different places. In Israel, the 2011 summer protests that called for "social justice" included rallies and tent communities that arose in cities all across the nation. These multiple actions and their geographical spread ultimately allowed for a protest much larger in scale.

The word on the street

With a new era of mass protest emerging, politicians must be aware of what is happening on the ground, says Dr. Hatuka. There are no guarantees that political leaders can meet a crowd's demands, but they should certainly be more attentive to the expressed needs. Recent uprisings, such as those in Egypt and Libya, have successfully toppled governments that long turned a deaf ear to their citizens.

This could force governments, which have an inherently pyramid-like structure of power, to become attentive to an increasingly influential web of citizens -- a positive change, Dr. Hatuka says. Contemporary protests are a reflection of citizens' desire to fight perceived injustice. Today, thanks to education and new forms of media, they are much more knowledgeable about their rights, power, and ability to make a change -- and they are demanding to change public discourse and affect policy decisions, she concludes.

China says trade with NKorea has nearly doubled (AP)

BEIJING ? China's trade with its close ally North Korea nearly doubled in the first seven months of the year compared with the same period in 2010, state media reported Sunday.

The 87 percent increase to $3.1 billion was announced at the start of a visit to the North by Chinese Vice Premier Li Keqiang that reaffirms strong ties between the communist neighbors.

Li said China was hoping for better relations between North and South Korea and a resumption of long-stalled six-nation nuclear disarmament talks.

China wants to work with all parties in promoting the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and safeguarding regional peace and development, the official Xinhua News Agency quoted Li's statement as saying.

North Korea relies heavily on China for food and fuel aid and many consumer products. Chinese companies are the main investors in North Korean mining, and the sides recently signed agreements on road building and jointly developing an industrial park on an island near the Chinese city of Dandong.

"The economic and trade cooperation between the two countries has shown great potential, with bilateral trade and investment volume reaching new highs," Xinhua said, citing the Chinese ambassador to Pyongyang, Liu Hongcai.

Bilateral trade between China and North Korea still is dwarfed by economic ties between China and South Korea. China is South Korea's largest trade partner.

Trade between Beijing and Seoul rose more than 20 percent in the first eight months of the year to $159 billion and is expected to hit about $250 billion for all of 2011.
