Iran Threatens Less Oil If More Sanctions Imposed

Iranian officials say more sanctions will result in less oil, even as Western leaders consider tougher sanctions against the country.

Despite the Nov. 8 International Atomic Energy Agency report affirming Iran's pursuit of nuclear weapons, Iranian leaders claim their nuclear ambitions are strictly peaceful.

Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi said Tuesday Iran will shut down the Strait of Hormuz if the West imposes more sanctions on its oil exports.

"If they [the West] impose sanctions on Iran's oil exports, then even one drop of oil cannot flow from the Strait of Hormuz," Rahimi said, according to the state-sponsored IRNA news agency.

About 40 percent of the world's oil supply passes through the strait.

State Department spokesman Mark Toner called the threat "another attempt to distract attention away from the real issue?continued non-compliance with their international nuclear obligations."

Meanwhile, the Iranian navy began a 10-day training exercise Saturday in what some experts believe is intended to show its military prowess.

Another Shady Land Deal in Africa, This One Assisted By the U.S. Ambassador to Tanzania

Trees ForTheFuture/CC BY 1.0
Tree-planting in Mayange Village near Kigoma, Tanzania, where thousands of people would be displaced?some of them refugees from Burundi with over 40 years of established lives, according to the Oakland Institute.

The Oakland Institute?the think tank that revealed the connection this summer between Ivy League universities and land grabs in Africa?is now voicing concern about the support the U.S. ambassador to Tanzania is lending to a land deal in that country that would displace more than 160,000 people.

Displacing Refugee Populations with Unsustainable Agriculture
According to the Oakland Institute [PDF], the stated goal of the project is to commercially develop a site?which encompasses lands that have served as refugee resettlement areas since 1972?for large-scale crop cultivation, beef, and poultry production, and biofuel production.

The institute adds, "Agrisol?s vision is to accomplish this through industrial-style agriculture employing biotechnology and other high-technology inputs to be supplied by AgriSol?s business partners, including Monsanto, Syngenta, and other powerful global industrial agribusiness conglomerates."

The key player locally is AgriSol Energy Tanzania, which is a partnership between Iowa-based Agrisol Energy, LLC and Tanzania-based Serengeti Advisers Limited. This month, the Oakland Institute released a brief highlighting eight myths about AgriSol.

Meanwhile Alfonso Lenhardt, the U.S. ambassador, recently defended AgriSol's activities in the Rukwa and Kigoma region using one of the very myths mentioned in that brief. According to the Daily News in Tanzania:

"Agrisol have not grabbed any land but were actually invited by the Prime Minister when he visited Iowa state two years ago and saw how American technology can produce sufficient food and energy from farms," Lenhardt argued as senior media stakeholders expressed concern over allegations of land grabbing by Agrisol in western Tanzanian regions.

Food Security?
Here's what the Oakland Institute has to say about food security and how AgriSol stands to benefit from the deal: "While claiming to benefit Tanzanians and contributing to the country?s food needs, AgriSol?s internal documents reveal its intent, which includes agrofuel production and export markets."

More specifically:

While pitching the project as in the best national interest of Tanzania, AgriSol?s Tanzanian cohorts fail to mention AgriSol?s demand for ?Strategic Investor Status? to receive incentives including a waiver of duties on diesel, agricultural and industrial equipment and supplies; production of agrofuels, and request of the government to commit and provide a timetable for the construction of a rail link for Mishamo.

AgriSol will generate significant profits through the project. While it intends to invest $100 million over a 10 year period, if corn is cultivated on only 200,000 of the 325,000 hectares, net profits for the company could be $272 million a year, an amount which nearly equals the total budget of Tanzania?s Ministry of Agriculture. If they receive Strategic Investor Status it would include an exemption from corporate tax, currently 30 percent of this amount.

? AgriSol?s feasibility studies call for it to negotiate with the government for input subsidies, which for now are targeted for the smallholder Tanzanian farmers. If accepted by the government, such a demand will divert scarce public resources from smallholders to agribusiness.

Abortion doctors charged with murder after 35 fetuses found (Reuters)

BALTIMORE (Reuters) ? Two doctors have been charged with murder after an investigation into a botched abortion uncovered 35 fetuses in a Maryland clinic's freezer, authorities said on Friday, calling the case the first of its kind.

The doctors, Steven Chase Brigham, 55, and Nicola Irene Riley, 46, were both arrested on fugitive warrants on Wednesday, police in Elkton, Maryland said.

"They have been indicted based upon a fetal homicide statute. This is probably the first case that Maryland has ever seen with this factual scenario using this statute. It's a unique situation," Maryland State Attorney Ellis Rollins told Reuters in an interview.

Brigham was arrested on Wednesday in Voorhees, New Jersey, according to a statement by the Elkton Police Department.

Riley was arrested at her home in Salt Lake City without incident, according to Lt. Justin Hoyal, spokesman for the Unified Police of Greater Salt Lake.

Prosecutors were expected to seek their extradition back to Maryland.

The investigation began in August 2010, when a young woman sought an abortion from the pair.

The abortion was induced in New Jersey, and the patient was then transported across state lines into Maryland, according to the Elkton police statement.

The operation was botched with both Brigham and Riley present, Elkton police said, although the statement did not elaborate on the nature of complications.

Riley took the woman to a nearby hospital, police said. The woman, who was not identified by authorities, survived and was later moved to Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.

Both Riley and Brigham have had their medical licenses suspended by the state of Maryland, according to the Maryland State Board of Physicians.

Brigham has performed approximately 50 such cross-state abortions, according to documents on the board's website.

Officers who searched the Elkton clinic found several fetuses in a freezer, police said.

A source who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity said there were 35 fetuses found in the clinic freezer.

Brigham is charged with five counts of first-degree murder, five counts of second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

Riley is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, police said.

An Elkton Police spokesman deferred further questions to Kerwin Miller, the assistant state's attorney for Cecil County who is prosecuting the case.

Miller could not be reached for comment.

Attorneys for Riley and Brigham also could not be reached for comment on Friday afternoon.

For Gingrich, it's a struggle to stay on message (AP)

STORM LAKE, Iowa ? As he scrambles to stop a slide in Iowa, Newt Gingrich's strategy amounts to this: hammer home a message about jobs and the economy while wrapping himself in the mantle of Ronald Reagan. But the loquacious former House speaker keeps struggling to stay on message.

On a 22-stop bus tour of Iowa, Gingrich finds himself unloading on his GOP rivals and reviving talk of a Greek cruise that nearly sank his campaign earlier this year. He fields questions about his work for mortgage giant Freddie Mac, ethics allegations and whether his three marriages make him a polygamist.

The economy? Jobs? Those issues sometimes have been lost in the mix.

"It's been wild and woolly," Gingrich acknowledged to a voter as his wife, Callista, collected a double cappuccino at a Sioux City coffee shop.

If there was ever a time when Gingrich has needed the discipline he's long lacked, it's probably now, as polls show his support tumbling in Iowa in the wake of a storm of ads assailing him as a Washington insider who used his influence to line his pockets.

He now trails rivals Mitt Romney and Ron Paul in Iowa and even if he does manage to score in the top three in Tuesday's caucuses, he doesn't have the money or the organization at this point that those two opponents do as they prepare to go the distance in the state-by-state march to the GOP nomination.

Gingrich argues that his economic pitch is the key to victory, and he doubled down on it Thursday _or at least tried to.

He appeared in Storm Lake with noted Reagan economist Art Laffer, who praised Gingrich as "far and away the best person to bring this county back to prosperity." Gingrich outlined his tax-cutting economic proposal and implied he was the heir to Reagan's supply-side vision. But he also strayed into long-winded digressions on the federal government's regulation of particulate matter load and conflict in the Strait of Hormuz.

His trademark spray of ideas leaves some voters impressed ? but overwhelmed.

"He has so many," said Ruth Lawlor, 76, who came to hear Gingrich speak at a chocolate store in Algona this week. "It's hard to keep track."

Gingrich's predilection to go for the jugular also has tripped him up, earning his self-described "positive" campaign headlines that he didn't want.

In an interview on CNN this week, Gingrich took the bait.

He not only blasted Romney and Paul but used some of the most incendiary language of the campaign so far. Romney wasn't "man enough" to own up to the negative attacks launched at Gingrich. And Paul was "totally outside the mainstream of every decent American."

Just days later, Gingrich seemed to be suffering from selective amnesia.

"The strategy of focusing on jobs and economic growth, staying positive and being pretty relentless in answering questions at every meeting is working," he said Thursday.

At his campaign events, Gingrich encourages his audiences to fire away with questions about allegations made in attack ads.

In recent days, he's been asked about an ethics fine he paid as speaker and his work for Freddie Mac.

"I don't understand numbers with all those zeros," said a man in Thursday's crowd, referring to the $1.6 million Gingrich's company earned from Freddie Mac.

Gingrich explained that he didn't take in all that money himself and that he fought to increase regulations and not increase funding for the government-sponsored entity.

The candidate argues that such forums give him an opportunity to set the record straight on issues that have been distorted. But they also dredge up the controversies, even as he seeks to put them behind him.

One example came in a telephone town hall meeting Wednesday night when a caller likened Gingrich's three marriages to polygamy.

"Jesus very specifically states in the Bible that divorced people are really still married, which I think technically means now that you're a polygamist, and I'm wondering what you'll do to legalize polygamy in the U.S. if you were to be elected president," the man said.

Gingrich labeled the question "fairly unusual" and said he would oppose any effort to legalize polygamy.

The former Georgia congressman acknowledges his tendency to stray off script.

At Mabe's Pizza in Decorah he was asked why his Republican rivals have been so eager to embrace government intervention in the economy.

He paused and an impish smile crept across his face.

"I'll just get in trouble," he said.

Teens admit 'tagging' Buffalo church

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - A pair of Buffalo teenagers has admitted to spray-painting graffiti on a church and several other buildings.

The Erie County District Attorney's office says 18-year-old David Moore and 17-year-old Eric Strozier pleaded guilty Friday to five counts of making graffiti. As part of their plea, they've agreed to pay $15,265 in restitution.

Prosecutors say the two vandalized St. Bernard's Roman Catholic Church and other buildings in Buffalo's Kaisertown neighborhood. Authorities told News 4 last August that one of the teens may have been trying to impress a girl.

Moore and Strozier face up to two years in prison when they're sentenced in March.
