Engadget's gear of CES 2012

We see an enormous number of gadgets each year at CES, and while the veil comes off a handful of notebooks, cameras and smartphones during the show, the gear that really makes the week for Engadget is our own. In each editor's gear bag, you'd likely be able to find a notebook, camera with external microphone, an Android / iOS / Windows Phone device, an AT&T LTE USB modem and enough bottled beverages to make trips to the "posh restroom" as routine as checking email. Pizza, pasta, chips and beef jerky keep us going during 20-hour days in the trailer, where a stable (and pricey) Ethernet connection let us bring you dozens of posts each hour without interruption. Jump past the break for a look at our gear in a bit more detail.

Fans and journalists jostled to take pictures as the 20-year-old singer emerged from the airport gate.

Archuleta said in a video blog before leaving the U.S. that he has taken acting lessons to prepare. He says: "I'm excited about it. ... This is a new experience for me."

Candidates woo DeMint as he stays on sidelines

(AP) ? In the 2012 Republican nominating contest, Sen. Jim DeMint is like the pretty girl all the boys want to take to the prom. Nearly every GOP presidential candidate has come a-courting the South Carolina Republican ahead of his state's Jan. 21 primary.

A dean of the influential and well-funded tea party movement, DeMint has made it clear he's sitting this one out.

The senator suggests he's not feeling that special attraction to any of the candidates, whether it be front-runner Mitt Romney or one of his rivals, or feeling peer pressure to pair up for the big dance. Instead, he has his eye on another class of candidate entirely ? those aiming to win enough Senate seats to flip the chamber from Democratic to Republican control.

"My priority is the Senate," DeMint said this week in an interview, adding that it doesn't matter who is elected president if Republicans don't get a Senate majority. He's again turning to his political action committee, Senate Conservatives Fund, to help candidates he wants to see elected to the Senate.

"I have the ability to raise $10 (million) or $15 million to elect some senators and that's how I think I can help the next president. So that's what I want to do," he said. "As soon as I get involved with one (presidential) candidate, I've got 80 percent of my supporters mad at me."

Still, for all of DeMint's efforts not to get dragged into the GOP presidential race, he waded into it on Tuesday with a prediction.

"I think Romney's going to win here," DeMint, 60, told South Carolina conservative radio host Mark Levin.

There are other signs that DeMint is warm to Romney. The senator's political adviser, Warren Tompkins, and former top aide, Luke Byars, are working on the candidate's behalf. And some close to DeMint, who endorsed Romney in 2008, say he's quietly telling people that he's backing Romney and they should, too.

In public, he'll only go so far. "I don't have anything against Mitt Romney or any of the candidates," he says. "I think we've got a good slate. I don't see any of them as unacceptable." He says he worries that endorsing one candidate might alienate supporters of the others.

Whether coy or genuine, DeMint's demurral hasn't discouraged his pursuers as the Republican political machinery rumbles south from New Hampshire. South Carolina's famously nasty nomination contest has proved decisive in the past; the winner has become the GOP's presidential nominee every time since 1980.

Romney faces challenges from Texas Rep. Ron Paul, former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, former Sen. Rick Santorum and Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Nearly every one of them has wooed DeMint.

A nod from the former ad executive could mean millions of dollars in campaign donations. It also could help send an underdog to Washington, as DeMint's endorsement did in 2010 for Sens. Marco Rubio of Florida and Rand Paul of Kentucky.

That explains why DeMint's name keeps popping up ? in glowing terms ? on the presidential campaign trail.

A Perry supporter told an audience this week that he wants DeMint on the team.

"Jim DeMint is a conservative icon and he's well respected and his opinion matters here," said Katon Dawson, the former state GOP chairman running Perry's South Carolina campaign.

On that, Romney's camp agrees.

"If there's a kingmaker, it's Jim DeMint," said State Treasurer Curtis Loftis, Romney's chairman.

It wasn't long ago that DeMint was ignored and even shunned by prominent Republicans.

Elected to the Senate in 2004, he made no friends in the collegial chamber when he scolded fellow Republicans for the party's dismal performance in the 2008 elections.

Two years later, he marshaled enough money to step past more senior Republicans and support his preferred candidates for Senate. Paul and Rubio were DeMint's success stories. Other DeMint candidates, such as Delaware's Christine O'Donnell, defeated the establishment's choice in the Republican primary but lost the general election.

Some in the GOP complained that while DeMint's activities may have won like-minded conservatives several seats in Congress, they also enabled Democrats to keep some vulnerable seats and maintain their majority.

This year, DeMint says he has no interest in playing kingmaker in the presidential race.

"Why he would sit this out and not get involved surprises me," said Tim Brett, a former state legislator and longtime GOP strategist.

Others say this is typical DeMint. "He's never really believed that just endorsing someone really helps that much," said Barry Wynn, a former state GOP chairman. Until Thursday, Wynn backed Perry but he abruptly switched his support to Romney, saying that Perry's attacks on Romney's past work as head of a private equity firm had crossed the line in a political party that values free-market capitalism.

DeMint has been down the presidential endorsement road before. In 2008, he charged into the race by endorsing Romney, a notable move for someone already known as one of the Senate's staunchest conservatives. Romney lost the nomination to Sen. John McCain.

DeMint says he expects his network of wealthy and influential South Carolina donors to be more vocal during the next week.

"A lot of them want to get involved," he said. "I think you'll see some support Mitt and some Newt and some Perry. I'm certainly not giving them directions."

Mobee's Magic Feet and Power Bar juice up Mac peripherals, no more battery swapping for you

Mobee's no stranger to the world of Mac peripherals these days, and you would've already come across the brand if swapping batteries is too much for you. Following its Magic Charger (for Apple's Magic Mouse) and Magic Bar (for Apple's wireless keyboard and Magic Trackpad), at this year's CES the company's decided to dish out an all-on-one charging station that features a second inductive charging pad plus four USB ports. But of course, there's a trade-off for this big daddy: in addition to the USB connection to your Mac, the Magic Feet also requires an AC adapter. However, given that each device has a battery life of up to 10 days only, this external power will actually come in handy for night time charging.

Alternatively, if you're not a fan of clogging up desk space with a charging station, then you can consider Mobee's Power Bar. Unlike its inductive-charging counterpart, this stick simply adds a 10-day battery and a micro-USB port to the Magic Trackpad, thus letting you plug-and-charge when needed. Oddly enough, Mobee doesn't say whether the Power Bar is also compatible with Apple's wireless keyboard, but the response we received was that it isn't a matter of technical limitation; but rather, it's simply that the company believes the Magic Bar is the better solution for owners of the wireless keyboard. Well, we'll let you be the judge.

Kiefer Sutherland to show paternal emotions in "Touch" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Kiefer Sutherland is ready to let audiences get in touch with his emotional side.

Sutherland told reporters on Sunday at the Television Critics Association panels for Fox, held in Los Angeles, that he was ready to transition from repressed action man Jack Bauer in "24" to an emotional father of an autistic son in the new Fox drama "Touch."

"Touch" tells the story of an evolving relationship of a father and his voiceless child who communicates through numbers, drawing connections between seemingly disconnected people and events across the world.

Sutherland said stepping away from the character of Bauer into Martin Brohm, a former journalist and luggage handler whose wife was killed in the September 11 attacks, was refreshing.

"The opportunity that I had in '24' to repress the character, informed the character beautifully for me. To be able to have the antithesis to that in this show, where he can openly show and have an emotional reaction to what is happening at this moment, is another fantastic opportunity," said Sutherland.

"The real choice to do this was not to get away from '24,' the reason I could not turn this down was that it spoke to me on a really profound level."

Creator Tim Kring, who was behind the sci-fi series "Heroes" about ordinary people with superhuman capabilities, said he long been interested "in this theme of interconnectivity."

"This is really a chance to continue what you would call social-benefit storytelling, the idea of using archetypal narrative to create and promote a positive energy in the world," said Kring.

The series will operate as stand-alone episodes with characters that interconnect throughout, tied together by the relationship between father and his autistic son as the son leaves a trail of clues through numbers to guide his father on a path of discovery.

The character of the son, Jake, played by David Mazouz, is initially identified as autistic, but Kring was eager to emphasize that the show was not exploring autism specifically.

"The show does not attempt to talk about autism, it's not a show about autism," said Kring, adding "as storytellers, we want to reserve the right to say there is some other idea floating above it, something spiritual or supernatural."

For "24" fans, Jack Bauer will be making a return as Sutherland confirmed he was shooting the "24" movie in late April this year.

Sutherland and Mazouz will be joined by co-stars Danny Glover and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in "Touch," premiering mid-season on Fox.

TODAY?S ZAMAN, ?STANBUL

Sunday saw St. Gregory the Illuminator Armenian Church in the Karak?y quarter of ?stanbul reopen for religious services following a six-year period of renovation supported by Si?li Municipality Mayor Mustafa Sar?g?l.
Sar?g?l was joined for the occasion by the mayor of Munich, Christian Ude, along with Archbishop Aram Ate?yan, deputy patriarch of the Armenian Patriarchate based in ?stanbul.

Speaking at the opening ceremony prior to the Sunday church service, Ate?yan thanked Sar?g?l for his support and efforts during the renovation, emphasizing the importance and value of showing respect towards houses of worship, ?We are all indebted to ?i?li Mayor Mustafa Sar?g?l, who has extended a helping hand to all sorts of projects in places ranging from Diyarbak?r to Van, as well as many more that I do not even know about. I want to thank him on behalf of the patriarchate,? he said.

Commenting upon the attendance of special guest Ude at the opening, Sar?g?l said he was thrilled to have the mayor of Munich present on the occasion. ?I thought long and hard about who I could invite to the opening who would be supportive and appreciative of such a project, and Christian Ude came to mind. We are absolutely delighted to have Ude, who has initiated and supported so many important projects in Munich over the years, with us in ?stanbul today,? he said. The church, which is unique in that it is the only one in ?stanbul with a conical dome, is the latest in a line of Armenian churches that have undergone restoration and been reopened in Turkey.

Sky to introduce 'augmented' TV viewing with zeebox companion app

A good week so far for British TV fans, especially those who want a little more interactivity than simply mashing a red button. The UK's satellite behemoth has announced a partnership with zeebox to create a companion app for its scheduling. Once released, you'll be able to connect with fans of the same shows, digest more program information and even purchase on-screen products. You might be doing all of these things with a laptop or tablet already, of course, but at least now you can spare your non-interested friends all those continued America's next top model tweets. If this sounds a bit like Facebook, Twitter and Amazon functionality bundled into an app, you might be right. Sky, however, clearly hopes this dedicated approach will give its programming that extra edge once the iPad / iPhone app pops up some time before the end of Q2. Viewers without iDevices will be able to access the goodies via more vanilla online methods. Hit the PR over the jump for more info.

Consumer credit surges by most since 2001 (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Consumer credit surged 10 percent in November, its biggest jump in a decade in a positive signal for the economy as consumers tapped their credit cards and the government doled out more student loans.

Outstanding consumer credit increased to $20.37 billion during the month, the Federal Reserve said on Monday. That was the biggest gain since November 2001 and nearly three times the median forecast in a Reuters poll.

Revolving credit, which mostly measures credit-card use, rose $5.60 billion, a third straight monthly increase.

"Credit growth is a positive sign for the recovery in that it signals increasing demand and willingness to spend," said Paul Edelstein, an economist at IHS Global Insight in Lexington, Massachusetts.

Edelstein said, however, that there was a risk the credit growth could be a sign that chronic unemployment was leading more people to turn to credit to fund necessary expenditures.

The government said late last month that consumer spending edged up just 0.2 percent in November, with households cutting back on their saving.

JPMorgan economist Daniel Silver said the increase in credit card borrowing might have been aided by some big banks imposing new fees on debit card use. It "may have pushed people to favor credit cards over debit cards," he said.

The increase in consumer credit was the 13th in 14 months and the biggest jump since creditors boosted lending in the wake of the September 11, 2001, attacks in New York and Washington.

Nonrevolving credit, which includes student and auto loans, rose a seasonally adjusted $14.78 billion in November.

Government lending to students appeared to be a significant factor in the increase, rising $6.4 billion. Unlike the broader credit gauges, the student lending data is not adjusted for seasonal fluctuations.

Over the 12 months through November, government loans to students rose 31.9 percent, outperforming any other kind of non-revolving loans tracked by the Fed, including those made by commercial banks.

However, there are some signs the surge in student lending registered since the last recession is tapering off. Year-over-year increases in student lending peaked at 78 percent in September 2010 and have trended lower since then.
