BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (AP) ? The accolades continue for a homeless New York teen who's a semifinalist in a prestigious national science contest.
Brentwood High School senior Samantha Garvey appeared Thursday as a guest on the "Ellen" talk show, where she received a $50,000 scholarship from AT&T to the college of her choice. She also was given a $5,000 J.C. Penney gift card and a $1,000 gift card for Whole Foods.
Last week, Garvey was named one of 300 semifinalists in the prestigious Intel science contest. The story of the aspiring marine biologist attracted national attention after it was reported that she and her family were forced to move to a homeless shelter on New Year's Eve.
"You are an inspiration," host Ellen DeGeneres told the 18-year-old senior who hopes to attend either Brown or Yale universities.
"You are an inspiration to me and I hope to anybody else out there watching that is having a hard time or even people who aren't having a hard time and are complaining about petty things that are going on in their lives and they look at you and look at how you conduct yourself."
After Garvey's situation came to light last week, Suffolk County officials announced they had located a rent-subsidized home for the family to live; her parents will pay 30 percent of their monthly income in rent. The house is currently undergoing repairs and should be ready for the family to move in shortly, officials have said.
Garvey, who has been invited by a local congressman to attend President Barack Obama's State of the Union Address next Tuesday, will learn the following day whether she will be one of 40 finalists in the prestigious science contest. She spent more than two years researching the effects of the Asian short crab on the mussel population in a salt marsh on Long Island, east of New York City.
The top prize in the science contest, which has been awarded to seven future Nobel Prize winners, is $100,000.
Garvey on Thursday was traveling from California, where the program was taped a day earlier, and not available to comment, a Brentwood school spokesman said.
She was presented with the scholarship check at the close of the program and appeared speechless by the presentation. She could be seen mouthing the words "That's awesome," as the credits rolled amid audience applause.

At the Apple announcement Thursday, the company presented its new vision for textbook. IBooks 2 and iBooks Author aim for more interactivity in school texts, just as Steve Jobs imagined it.
Apple?s event in New York showed that the iPad could eventually make paper textbooks an endangered species. And that?s just the way that former Apple chief executive Steve Jobs wanted it to be.
Skip to next paragraphIn his biography of Steve Jobs, author Walter Isaacson wrote about how Jobs met with media magnate Rupert Murdoch to talk about education. The books says, ?Jobs agreed with Murdoch that the paper textbook business would be blown away by digital learning materials.?
?In fact, Jobs had set his sights on textbooks as the next business he wanted to transform. He believed it was an $8 billion a year industry ripe for digital destruction. He was also struck by the fact that many schools, for security reasons, don?t have lockers, so kids have to lug a heavy backpack around.?
The book quotes Jobs as saying, ?The iPad would solve that.? His idea was to hire great textbook writers to create digital versions and make them a feature of the iPad.
Jobs held meetings with major publishers such as Pearson Education about partnerships.
?The process by which states certify textbooks is corrupt,? Jobs said. ?But if we can make textbooks free, and they come with the iPad, they don?t have to be certified. The crappy economy at the state level will last for a decade, and we can give them an opportunity to circumvent that whole process and save money.?
Apple set its sights on education this morning when?it announced a slew of new apps and services for students and teachers.
Among them was iBooks 2, an updated version of the company?s iPad e-reading app that adds support for interactive textbooks. Apple promises that iBooks 2 is a complete reinvention of the textbook as we know it. From my hands-on time with the app this morning, I?m not sure if Apple has completely obliterated the need for textbooks, but it?s certainly begun an interesting journey to do so.
The free iBooks 2 app is available today, along with a few sample textbooks on the iBookstore. I chose the E.O. Wilson Foundation?s Life on Earth, being the science nerd that I am. The app took a few minutes to download and upon first launch it played a dramatic video featuring Wilson. The video, while a bit much, makes it feel like you?re exploring an episode of Planet Earth, instead of a dry science textbook.

SEATTLE (AP) ? Steve Sarkisian has completed the makeover of his defensive coaching staff at Washington by hiring Tosh Lupoi away from California to be the Huskies new defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator.
Washington announced Lupoi's hiring on Monday. Along with his responsibilities as a coach, Lupoi is regarded as a top recruiter on the West Coast.
Lupoi has spent the past four seasons as defensive line coach for the Golden Bears. Lupoi previously played defensive line at California where he was first introduced to new Washington defensive coordinator Justin Wilcox.
Sarkisian says Lupoi will have an "immediate impact" both coaching on the field and as a recruiter.

The 30-year-old Buddle, who appeared at the 2010 World Cup, is currently at German second-tier club Ingolstadt.
Buddle's representative Richard Motzkin said on Twitter that the former Los Angeles Galaxy player is at Everton this week during the German season's winter break.
Another of Motzkin's clients, Donovan, has been loaned to Everton from the Los Angeles Galaxy during Major League Soccer's offseason. Howard has been Everton's goalkeeper since 2007, and Hahnemann joined as a backup in September.

ATHENS, Greece ? Strikes and demonstrations against Greek austerity measures hit the capital Athens on Tuesday, as international debt inspectors returned to decide whether the country's reforms are strong enough for it to secure a vital bailout.
The officials from the European Union, European Central Bank and International Monetary Fund, which are lending money to Greece to keep it from bankruptcy, are expected to press the government for faster cost-cutting reforms.
Greece's continued access to bailout loans depends not only on delivery on its austerity promises but also on negotiations with private creditors on a bond swap deal aiming to cut its debt by euro100 billion ($127 billion). It needs to get an agreement soon if it is to secure more rescue loans, with a bond repayment of euro14.5 billion due in late March.
Some 10,000 protesters took part in rallies in central Athens over potential pay cuts in the recession-battered private sector. Anti-austerity strikes in the capital disrupted public transport and other services. Journalist unions also launched a 48-hour strike.
Police said a plain-clothed officer from the anti-terrorism division was beaten and seriously injured by a group of some 30 protesters who took his handgun. The rally was otherwise peaceful.
Under government pressure, unions and employers are due to launch talks Wednesday to explore ways of slashing labor costs. Lower-level members of the debt of the debt inspection team started the talks in Athens on Tuesday, with the mission chiefs due Friday.
Meanwhile, Greece saw its borrowing rates ease marginally in a bill auction on Tuesday. Unable to issue long-term debt due to untenably high borrowing interest rates of 33 percent, the country maintains a market presence through regular treasury bill auctions.
The public debt agency said it raised euro1.625 billion ($2.06 billion) in a sale of 13-week treasury bills, an interest rate of 4.64 percent, compared with 4.68 percent in the last such auction in December.
Demand for the bills was 2.90 times the amount on offer, roughly the same as last month.

Digging your fingers into knotted shoelaces, garbage bags, and other tangles is no fun (not to mention difficult). Redditor Jumalkavita shows us a simple trick for opening stubborn knots.
Essentially, you just twist the end of the knot so it constricts, then push it through the rest of the knot. It should slide right through. More complicated knots may require you to do this a few times, but it should help you get through knots with greater ease than before. Click on the image below for a closer look at how it works, and hit the link to read more.

BEIJING ? China appears on track to avoid an abrupt economic slowdown with possible global repercussions after growth eased to a still robust 8.9 percent in the last quarter of 2011.
The expansion in the world's second-largest economy was the slowest in 2 1/2 years but December retail sales and factory output accelerated, data showed Tuesday. Growth in the previous quarter was 9.1 percent.
"Today's outcome seems to confirm a `soft landing' scenario," said Frances Cheung of Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong.
China is one of the biggest importers and slower growth could have global repercussions if it cuts demand for iron ore, industrial components and other goods from Australia, Brazil, Southeast Asia and elsewhere.
Growth decelerated in 2011 as Beijing hiked interest rates and tightened investment curbs to prevent overheating and tame politically dangerous inflation. Communist leaders reversed course and started easing lending late in the year after plunging U.S. and European export demand raised the threat of job losses and unrest.
The slowdown was in line with government plans, said Ma Jiantang, commissioner of the National Bureau of Statistics. He said the "ideal situation" would be to keep growth between 8.5 percent and 9 percent, with inflation low.
In 2012, China faces "complexity and challenges" due to global malaise and pressure for prices to rise, Ma said at a news conference. Still, he said, "The fundamentals of China's long-term steady economic growth have not changed."
Growth in the three months ending in December was the slowest since the second quarter of 2009, when the economy expanded 7.9 percent.
Retail sales growth rebounded to 18.1 percent from November's 17.1 percent while factory output rose 12.8 percent, up from November's 12.4 percent.
"This all reaffirms our outlook on China for a soft landing," said Moody's Analytics economist Glenn Levine in a report. "Export demand has cooled, but domestic demand is still running strong."
Consumer inflation, a volatile element in a society where poor families spend up to half their incomes on food, edged down in December to 4.1 percent after hitting a 37-month high of 6.5 percent in July.
That could give Beijing leeway to stimulate the economy, helping small companies that have been hurt by plunging export demand and squeezed by lending curbs, forcing thousands out of business and wiping out jobs.
Analysts expect Beijing to try to stimulate growth with an interest rate cut, tax cuts or other measures. The central bank promised pro-growth measures this month to help entrepreneurs though it also pointed to inflation pressures and global uncertainties and said its monetary policy will stay "prudent."
Also in 2011, China's urban population exceeded the number of rural dwellers for the first time, rising to 51.3 percent of the nation's 1.3 billion people, the government reported.
Industry surveys show manufacturing and exports contracted in November and December, while a slowdown in real estate sales triggered by government efforts to stop speculation and cool surging housing prices has sparked concern about the impact on the overall economy. December import growth fell to 11.8 percent, barely half the previous month's 22.1 percent gain.
"The slowdown has yet to come to an end," said economist Zhang Xinfa at China Galaxy Securities in Beijing.
Analysts say Beijing still needs to boost consumer spending to reduce reliance on exports and investment to drive growth.
The communist government has pledged for years to reorient its economy but is only starting to make progress after its stimulus in response to the 2008 global crisis fueled a surge in construction spending.
Ma, the statistics official, pointed to the shift in population toward cities and said that might help to spur consumption growth.
"If we can rely more on domestic consumption," said Credit Agricole CIB's Cheung, "that will help the economy to sail through all these headwinds."

This portrait of Arfa at the age of 10 accompanied my story about her in the Seattle P-I in 2005.
Arfa Karim Randhawa, the computer programming prodigy who became the world?s youngest Microsoft Certified Professional at 9 years old, has passed away at the age of 16, according to reports out of her native Pakistan this weekend.
She had been in the hospital for nearly a month after reportedly suffering an epileptic seizure and cardiac arrest. Two weeks ago her outlook appeared to improve. In recent weeks, Microsoft had stepped in to help provide expert medical care.
As explained in this earlier post, I met Arfa and wrote a story about her in 2005 as a newspaper reporter covering her visit to the Microsoft campus in Redmond, when she was 10 years old. After seeing the reports this weekend, I went back and found some of the audio clips from my interview with her, including her talking about meeting Bill Gates, learning to program and what she planned to do when she grew up.
I've pieced together the highlights in this audio file, to provide a better sense for what she was like. One of the most remarkable parts, apart from her recounting the conversation with Gates, is hearing her talk with such authority about developing Windows applications.
As you'll hear at the end, Arfa at 10 years old had also settled on her philosophy of life, and committed it to memory. She told me about it after our interview, when she was having her picture taken outside, so I turned my recorder back on and asked her to repeat it for me on tape.
"If you want to do something big in your life, you must remember that shyness is only the mind," she said. "If you think shy, you act shy. If you think confident you act confident. Therefore never let shyness conquer your mind."
